2Wire the vendor for TV service
(old news - 03:04PM Monday Jan 03 2005)
tags: hardware · TVIP
Some time ago SBC announced that Microsoft would provide the software for their video over DSL service (that should start popping up in 2005, pending network upgrades). Apparently 2wire will provide the set-top hardware; GigaOm takes a peek at the unit, which features a 250 gig hard drive. The box is part of a brand new joint venture between 2wire and SBC, which will grow as the company gets into the video business. More details on the box over at the 2wire website.

Cool

Another reason for me to ditch crappy CEBridge Cable all together. I can't wait until SBC upgrades this area. I've been reading a lot on that receiver on 2wire's website as well. Interesting to see where we will be come the beginning of 2006 with all this.

My first post for 2005 .

Re: Cool

A lot of areas in Ohio won't see the upgrades for a long time to come.

Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo will be the first after that--they will slowly move to new cities.

Its all about how much they're going to make back.

Re: Cool

I have TWC here and they rasied their rates again. Adelphia I don't know of. I havent checked my cable bill where they service at.

SBC had a thing on their website with where they plan on putting fiber in terms of where it would make money. I'll have to find it again and post it. I seen it about 2 weeks ago on C-SPAN as well at about 3am but don't recall which day i seen it.

If it works, it'll kick some a$$, and also make me reconsider how soon I should be getting rid of Time Warner Cable.

Well not for fiber but yet it still brings their "portal" for their content.

You should read about the box on 2Wire's website. It is a satellite box.

It looks like SBC is going to keep using Dish to provide tv service via a dish on the house like they do now. All that SBC seems to be doing is the possibility of provider faster DSL service because the video isn't going to be going over their network. What a waste of time and money. SBC should invest money into developing a next generation network instead of limping along with DSL and satellite service.

XXIA will love this

Did anyone catch this part on their website?

"The built-in DVD/CD drive lets you play, read and burn DVDs and CDs so you can easily add media to your library or take it with you for sharing or enjoying on the go."

Here we go again.

Re: XXIA will love this

so when will we see the MPAA sueing people for downloading TV shows now and burning them? or maybe they'll sue SBC for providing the technology built into the customers set-top box.

Re: XXIA will love this

key word is always "yet" remember this thing NEEDS the DSL connection.

no reason the Feds can't make them require a "back door" to the system.

They want a back door to VoIP no reason why they wouldn't want one to the this service. especially since it burns the movies to DVD for on the go use.

The box looks nice, and boost some pretty impressive stats, increased competition, may mean lower rates for everyone.

it ain't gonna be cheap

dual 8VSB tuners, dual 8PSK tuners, a 250GB HD, DSL modem, 8002.11G wi-fi.

the mediaportal sounds a little leaner, but damn that thing sounds prohibitively expensive.(think directv's HDtivo, with a DVD player, a dsl modem, a wi-fi bolted on)

So is this for use with their ADSL2+ DSLTV or is this for use with thier joint venture with DISHNetwork?

I have SBC DSL (3mbup/512kbdown for $35 a month), and the 2wire modem that SBC offered.

I know when I was able to get this great 2wire ethernet/usb/wireless modem that has a great interface and is easy to use (The 1000sw) It was a $150 modem and SBC made it $50. So it may be espensive, but I see SBC offer great deals on equipment, unlike COX Cable, who either rents you a box for a monthly fee or makes you go buy your own here.

I'm excited and am ready to switch to SBC. They take care of their customers pretty good.

Re: it ain't gonna be cheap

yah they may take care of their customers at first but wait until you see the price tag on that little machine

2Wire products are SH*T. they work when they want to IF they work at all. no vent holes like they should have to cool down with, no fans, and always have something wrong and you may get and updated firmware every 8 years from 2Wire if you're lucky.

Linksys or DLink products are much better than an overpriced box from SBC/2Wire.

Not

I don't think this is the set-top box that they will use with their video-over-fiber service.

I read other articles about this and they state that the only internet this thing uses is for music, possibly internet surfing, and photos.

I assume they will wait on deploying a new set-top 'video-over-dsl' box untill they upgrade most of thier existing network (aka years away).
