Terabyte Webmail
One company quietly offers it
by Karl Bode Thursday 23-Dec-2004 tags: mail
Quietly hidden in the battle between major players to ramp up webmail space is the fact one company (iTrade Group) is now offering 1 Terabyte e-mail storage to users of a biker's website: HR Riders. As Tom's Hardware points out, that's more than 40 million emails, several hundred games, 200,000 MP3's, or more than 350,000 five Megapixel digital photos. "60 percent of our users use more than five GByte of their available space and 25 percent regularly send 500 MByte attachments all day long," says the company's CEO.

I already have an account there and its great.
Up to 500MB attachments. Your even alloud to use it for storage.
The only draw back is that it is supposdly a non-secure HTML login.

Re: w00

I get this error when I try to check email on there website.

Connection Error!
The maximum amount of concurrent users are currently logged into the server. Please try logging in later.

I say screw these people and stick with G-mail it is far more reliable and dependable then some weird site offering 1TB of space.

Why does DSL reports waste time on these topics? I mean the poster should know that »somedomain:8383 is nothing more than a private Imail server!

Is anything screened here before its greenlighted for post?

And just to clarify ... has anyone tried to transfer a 10 gig file across 100mbps lan connection? It takes about 30 minutes! So go figure on broadband (about 0.5 mbps) it would take HOURS!

America's infatuation with bigger ... more ... gimme more just continues to amaze me? No wonder people are FAT, OVERWEIGHT and OUT OF SHAPE!

"Yes I would like to supersize that!"

Instead of worrying about when you'll get that TB of storage space, try going out walking in your neighborhood and converse with your neighbors!

The returns will be MORE SATISFYING.

My only question is why...

We have gone from having 4mb mailboxes with Hotmail less than a year ago to having 1 TB mailboxes with companies like this. My only question is why? I understand that some people use their e-mail for business but I don't see why you would need more than 1 GIG (and that's pushing it).

Hey that's the same way I thought about GMail, but once I started making study guides and sending them to people I used about 50 MB from my original 10 MB Email Account.

I agree, this is nuts.

More and more, I'm beginning to wonder if they want you to store your whole life on their service, for whatever reason.

On as side note, they appear to have been slashdotted!

i'm going to assume they are wanting people to use their classified add's so they can make money...

but on a negative note, it would almost appear they are promoting warez users. by saying thats 60k games, and so forth. i mean which games do they really think people are going to store on there, or the 200,000 mp3s that not one will be commiting copy right infrindgements.

line em up fellas. let the trading begin.

one word: storage

even though it's probably slow, clogged with users, more than likely not reliable, if you need a http storage dump for certain things it may prove useful.. granted, with those qualities you'll probably never think about using 1tb, but knowing its there isn't a bad idea.

I'm reminded of.. what was it... spymac.com, offering 1GB, and making it live before GMail; and then suffering from weeks of horrible speed degradation, to the point that I simply could not make use of the service at all.

never happen..

This will never happen in mainstream mail services, not for a long time anyway.

1TB is impossible to offer, specially for free.I bet the people that are offering this dont have much more than a few TB and are just expecting no one to use more than a gb.

something else I might add....

Now that it is the broadband age, and upload speeds will soon be increasing. I think mainstream email services should higher the 10mb attachment limit, 10mb is only 10 or less high res. uncompressed images... and also it would make sending video's alot better

Re: something else I might add....

Agreed. My provider gives me 20mb of email space, with a 10mb limit - I think; might be 15mb - on attachments.

As for gmail and their 1GB limit...when that part of the service opens to all, I expect that 1GB limit to increase modestly. Nothing as high as 1TB or even close, but I wouldn't be suprised to see 10GB.

As for the service mentioned in this article, I remember reading in a forum here that people were having intermittent problems with the service. Enough to make it annoying, so I hear.

What a Joke !

We are receiving so many requests for our free 1 TB/500MB attachment email account that you may experience a downtime regarding receiving email for a few hours as we are currently adding more email servers so you can enjoy our site for many years to come.

They are offering more then what they can handle. They started this about 3 weeks ago and I have heard nothing but horror stories. At first they were offering pop3 then they stopped pop3. Then people couldn't login to their accounts.

Reminds me of this other site

Forgot it's name. They offered 1 TB email. Then they closed down the forums and set the limit to 2 MB or something.

How can they do this for free?

That kind of storage is not cost effective and is impractical. How are they doing this? The largest HD's on the market are like 400 - 450 gigs. Are they running out and buying 3 400gig HDs for each user????

I wonder if this is spam/junkmail bait.

(Since you have to give an address and YOUR email address before they give you one of theirs.)

That is not hard to do at all. Just digitize your own home made video and don't compress. Use non-compressed DV footage. It'll quickly add up to 1TB.

missing

you guys are missing one thing

they most likely do not have one terabyte of space per each person. At one point in time google was thinking about offering unlimited space. The average user uses about 20 mb of space. This is just to spread popularity. I'm sure its impossible to upload 500 mb on their server as its easy to see that their server sucks

It's simple - if you want to test your theories about this being "too good to be true"... get you and 19 of your buddies with some leftover bandwitdh, sign up for an account, make some dummy PDF files or something, and upload upload upload. See if the servers can take it.
