BellSouth 4-6Mbps
ADSL2+ deployments start in '05
(old news - 07:16PM Monday Dec 06 2004)
tags: dsl · bandwidth
BellSouth today officially confirmed they'll start offering ADSL2+ in "select markets" next year. BellSouth says they'll spend $2 million to upgrade their network, at first offering downstream speeds between 4-6Mbps, and upstream speeds between 512-768kbps. The company did not offer prices for the service, but says they should be able to reach 80% of their customers. Users in our BellSouth forum share their thoughts.

Slow

That is pretty slow to be considered "next generation".

But I suppose it wouldn't be bad in 2005.

Re: Slow

As always that's not the limit. ADSL2+ can go upwards of 25Mb/s. They're just capping it at that rate because they have plans for the rest of the bandwidth and they can't unsell something they've sold.

hah, i said it and its happening, bellsouth once again dosent give the customer what they want to try to get as much money as they can with providing as little service as they can...

oh well at least its faster than 1.5/3mbits... but still complete crap upload speeds... 512kb? 768kb? please...

also why invest all this money in ADSL2 equipment when they could be investing that into their fiber deployments?

more patches on the customers leaking to cable internet access that is cheaper, quite franky faster, and *usually* (depending on ISP) just as reliable... of course YMMV by area and such, but still....

lol... I agree. I am using 6mbits/608k adsl service right now. ADSL2 has to be at least 10mbits.

because they can reach many many more customers with the plant they have now, not with the plant that they don't have or may have in the future.

@attbi.com

Invest in fiber like Verizon? I'm a verizon customer and Verizon hasn't botherd to roll out the DSL yet. It looks like I'll have to wait untill I can Get FIOS....20 years down the road! Bellsouths deployment of ADSL2 will give them a bigger and faster return on their investment.

ADSL2+

Why would you role out ADSL2+ when the speeds it will support can already be supported by ADSL?

@bellsouth.net

Re: ADSL2+

Those speeds are for surfing. The rest of the 20+ megs per sec are for IPTV and VoIP.

Bundling of additional services!

VOIP, IPTV and the most important reason, extended reach. In a few words the whole enchilada.

Yay competition

Awesome, now there is a reason for SBC to push their ADSL2+ into the '05 market .

Re: Yay competition

Not really. SBC and BST don't compete against each other in the ADSL business. If anything it'd be competing for shareholders.

Re: Yay competition

4-6mbps can be pushed over a regular ADSL line. BellSouth announced that they were going to invest $34 billion into their whole infrastructure to upgrade to ADSL2+ (25mbps). Seriously if they are going to invest all that money for only 4-6mbps that would be a huge mistake. Hopefully with that much we will be able to see 25mbps. The distance rates for ADSL2+ are very critical as for speed goes.

Re: Yay competition

Because they can beat the cable companies in terms of speed but they'll be able to offer more services. As always bundling is where the money's at.

ADSL2+ speed could be up to 25Mbps

According the the ADSL2+ standard, speed could be as high as 25Mbps (under ~3000 ft), 20Mbps (under ~5000 ft), 10Mbps (under ~8K), 6Mbps (~10,000 ft), 4Mbps (~12,000 ft) etc.

So, why only 4-6Mbps?

Because their competition isn't at over 6 Mbps.

Cable can go up to 38 Mbps, but I don't see cable companies offering 38 Mbps (though that probably has a bit to do with the fact that they're overloaded nodes would crumble ).

Re: ADSL2+ speed could be up to 25Mbps

I thought the driving force for deploying ADSL2+ is Triple Play, i.e., Data, voice & video. The cable companies have all three services and the Telcos only have data and voice.

Maybe they'll announce their broadcast TV, Video-on-demand services later on....

With that kind of distance limitation, ADSL2 is useless until we get FTTC.

FTTC?

I'm on bellsouth's
b@st@rd FTTC network right now, also known as IFITL, and I can't even get >1.5Mbps!

Oh well!

At least comcast is finally availabe here, and supposedly with 6/768 availabe Q1-2005. If Bellsouth keeps it up like this, I'll be more than happy to relinquish myself to a monopoly I used to loathe, but their network seems to be maturing faster. We just got cable modems here 3 1/2 months ago and already the speed is increasing... Bellsouth should take notice.

The distance charts that are published are very very pessimistic. I work at an independent telco, and have tested 10+Mbps at 14K+ ft out (my house). I have also tested over 1.5mbps at 22Kft out, but I didn't try to test for max speed at this distance. This is a huge upgrade over g.dmt, even though the charts don't necessarily show it.

That is slow but...

For Bell South it is a pretty big step. Not everyone is in heaven (SBC territory) and could get 3mbps/512kbps for $39.95. For a Bell South customer that would be a major step.

Hence the "at first" listed in the article. That could be just initially, then with time they'll keep increasing it. Kind of like what happened here with "ADSL 1". 2 years ago 1.5mbps was super.

Another year

It looks like some markets will go to 25Mbps in 2006. Probably after they get the fiber to the curb

Re: Another year

Most major telco's including BST are running fiber to the premise on new installations as of late last year or early this year...

I have BST 3MB service and cannot complain.
Even though I do not have fiber to the prem.

Yeah, I caught that, too. At first I thought, "$2 Million is less than what the CEO pockets as a bonus. What a joke." So, I went to the news source link and learned the Billion, not Million difference. Come'on, DSLR, get your facts straight. You can tell the difference between million and billion, right?

Re: is bellsouth a small outfit?

You're right $2,000,000 is nothing at all. I think it is a good price for them to provide these speeds to people in 2005. The thing I hope I don't see is them saying we don't have to upgrade after putting in only $2,000,000. 5-6mbps is NOT a next generation network, FIBER TO THE HOME is.... The thing is this is VERY cheap so it is worthwhile for the next 2 years or so, but after that this type of bandwidth will be considered slow.

IFITL

I wonder if users on IFITL would be part of the "select markets" that BS plans to start servicing first next year; since we already have FTTC.

I would think so. The IFITL users are already set up for this new infrastructure. Since its fiber fed to the pedestal from maybe an RT, it is then copper to the house over 2 pair (RJ45).

Problem is their tech support !!!

I left cable for Bell South DSL in July... I am now back to cable in December. Download speeds were all over the place, had to reboot the moden 4-5 times every day and my Lingo voip sounded terrible....But not now...I got Beep-Beep again. Also their tech support is non existant unless you can speak Hindu or perhaps Phillipino. Everytime I called I had a different accent with limited english trying to read from a script. If you move to BS you will be sorry.

Oh, Did I mention their pop3 server down more than up ?

ADSL2+ Huh?

The dumbph*cks at SBC around me can't even get ADSL ver. 1 right. By the time they figure out how to get it working, there will be low level satellites offering T-1 speed for $4.95/month.

What about the rest of us?

I'm sorry, I hate to change the subject...
But what about all the rest of us that have Qwest and other providers?
We don't seem to ever see any of these speeds and especially the prices.
Last I checked prices for Qwest(MSN) were $53.99-59.99 for 1.5/896.
The download seems pretty pathetic but the upload looks great.
My current Cable Internet Mediacom is $45.95 for 3/256.

I would love to see some of theses SBC and BS prices and speeds around here!!!
Compare the above to the prices that keep getting quoted on Broadband Reports and it doesn't makes you feel very well.
