SBC Vs. Verizon
'Project Lightspeed' vs. Fios fiber
"SBC in 2010 will be offering slower speeds than France and Japan in 2005," notes industry analyst Dave Burstein, who chimes in on "Project Lightspeed", the company's effort to offer ADSL2+ to residential users. Wall Street is apparently more impressed with Verizon, since they'll eventually be offering fiber right to the user's door - as well as spending $29 billion more on their next generation network.

Re: Verizon Is Expanding

PA isn't being totally ignored. VZ fiber activity was reported in Chester and Bucks counties.

I hope they get it to you soon, Mike.

Re: Verizon Is Expanding

So THAT'S why they call it "Bucks" County!

Actually, there's a fiber initiative in Kutztown too, in Berks County. Not sure if it's VZ-related though.

What are you talking about? Bucks County is one of the wealthiest in the state. Looks like you're thinking of one of your Western PA locals.

Jeepmatt, I'm not laughing at the people of Bucks county, it's Mike's sense of humor I found funny. Let's just sub something else in there besides Bucks county.

Re: Verizon Is Expanding

That's another thing that pisses me off. Buck season. 2 million people and about 7 million fingers are out hunting for a deer. Though in western PA, only three people were shot, a moron fell out of a broken treestand, and a 12 year old flipped a ATV and I think died. (?)

So what?

Like France or Japan is anywhere near the size of the US. I get sick of hearing that Japan or whoever has the next gen cell system. We need more infrastructure in one state than they need in an entire country!

Amen! Every time I see one of these I post that and someone always fires something at me. Infrastructure is the key, it would take more for one state than any of those other countries. Plain and simple.

Now my area will probably be one of the last areas to see this. My CO wasn't enabled with DSL until September of last year.

Last time I looked those other countries are larger than many single states here in the US. The point being made is that there is absolutely no reason why many of out large cities can not have networks like those countries do. The fact remains that companies here in the US are greedy and don't want to spend any money. Take SBC for example with "Project Suckspeed", while Verizon is taking the initiative to run the fiber to the home where it is useful and not to the local node where we are still stuck with useless crappy copper.

They have spent all their money on ATT wireless. They don't care about landline crap. Lightspeed is one big lie. They will hand pick the areas to serve and everybody else will have to go elsewhere.....I just don't believe in SBC until they offer me these services.

Absolutely!

That reminds me of those fools who cry:

"Why doesn't the US have widespread passenger rail service, like Japan or England or France or ....... You get the idea.

When Big Brother subsidizes all sorts of neat things, it's easy to have them. If you told the average person, (who might NOT have health care), that the US government should subsidize extremely high-speed broadband, so a bunch of technogeeks could fileshare a bunch of crap, they would look at you like were mentally ill, and they would be right.

There is a hell of lot more important things the US Government should be doing. Subsidizing broadband is at the bottom of the list, IMO.

Re: So what?

Actually, we do have widespread passenger rail. It's Amtrak, and the coverage isn't really any worse than Europe's offerings.

You better believe that the coverage of Eurail is not to every city and village...it primarily goes for the larger cities.

I wish to F*** that PA would get their BB, since everytime, the subject is brought up, PA residents start crying. It'd be worth a billion or two to get them to STFU.

Yep Its FIber

SBC too little-too late

I think SBC has already missed the boat. They have expanded their infrastructure too little-too late. The cable companies are too far ahead to catch up to now I beleive. Verizon may still have a chance with their FTTH, but maybe not. I dought SBC will be around in 2010.

SBC is a regional monopoly and since the cable competition is Comcast they have nothing to fear. Right now their low priced DSL is much sweeter then the high priced cable Internet.

Comcast has done nothing to upgrade to an all fiber system. People living in SBC/Comcast region will be left behind the Fiber revolution.

Yeah Yeah Yeah

Meantime all Verizon offer me is 1,500/384 and a lousy ability to get a decent pair for a adsl line. Better a decent ADSL2+ now than fiber in 10-15 years. Let's get realistic.

They are not just upgrading for internet

I think many fail to see that while each has advantages, its not being deployed JUST for internet access, ADSL2 is suppose to be for TV/phone/internet, thats good business and it makes sense. Its just the methods they deploy them that should be looked at, not each itself, both have advantages.

Cry me a river.

You all cry about your slow broadband. At least you are able to get Broadband.Try going back to dialup and not being able to get high speed.I,like many, would take a 1.5/384 connection or anything else as far as that goes. You sound like the rich kid up the street who is complaining because he only got $5000 worth of Christmas presents this year while I'm the poor boy who would be happy to get $5 worth.BTW,does anyone know if FTTH will be deployed over %100 of Verizons customers? Thanks for listening to me cry.I need a tissue.

Re: Cry me a river.

I don't see where Verizon''s speed from the chart on the front page will be much better than what SBC is going to offer with their ADSL2 and it will be available to a lot more people sooner than Verizon''s fibre.

How bout an after dinner whine...

Be glad you live in SBC -- Verizon land you don't have a clue how good you have it.
Here in QWEST = QWORST land we have a phone company that defines the term parasite they steal our money and don't deliver **JACK**.
