There was a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the other day about a local high school junior who had developed his own video production editing software and was selling it for $7,000 a pop to school systems around the country. He's already got companies lining up for his services when he graduates.

| I'm still in High School, while I'm not top marks, I have had headhunters call me. Age means nothing in IT, some of the best known companies have been started by people still in high school.
As many people say, Marks are not the most important, ultimate thing in a young person's life. When it all comes down, I rather hire someone without good grades that's a pratical thinker than a breathing textbook that seems to be the standard A HS grad nowadays. | |

It's been discovered over and over that many bright young people have technical development that far outpaces their character development, and this limits the positions they can hold without making those in authority legitimately nervous. Very smart people can trade "intelligent" for "experienced", but that only goes so far.

I have seen a 19 year old code circles around a crew of developers. They have a tendency to have the time needed to learn and adjust to new methods and also the lack of kids and wives/life partners. The funny part is the older guys are generally very mad when these guys come and try to get a foot hold in industry. This tends to push them away from pro work and more towards the freeware/shareware and open source communities.

if they'd ever change the license, then firefox would have to be open source, until that very point when they had changed it, and all code until that point has to be open; you can look at it as some guarantee, in a certain way they brag about themselves with this.
if that would ever happen, someone takes over from that point and continues, if someone doesn't, you can always do that yourself...
in fact (a bit off-topic) this happened with XFree86 under linux, XFree86 is the graphic system for linux and was really the only choice at the time. When XFree86 changed it license to another opensource license, but incompatible with most distributions, an old rival X.org was restarted at the very second, they merge all code from their own with the last version from XFree86 with the last license, and continued from there... Right now, XFree86 is pretty much dead and X.org is becoming the most used graphical system.
As they follow the same protocol, you can use the one or the other without difference, there is no real visible change in their versions, but they already added some longawaited features in their new version...

So they didn't cost me anything anyway, BUT, Linux is much more secure, so much more powerful and free. It's just as pretty as Windows (KDE) and all the programs are there. Some people are just scared of change. I was too. Linux is the best operating choice for me at this time. I have a dual boot w/ the Win2KPro and I never boot it up. NEVER! You should try a Knoppix CD for a trial linux experience. It has come a long way since even two years ago.
