PCWorld offers Firewalls 101 - a layman's exploration of the topic, while users in our security forum discuss their favorite products. Sadly, though, even this is too complex for a lot of the people on the internet.

Re: Hmmmm.........

fire what? A wall of fire in my computer? Wouldn't a wall of fire melt my PC? I don't want that, screw firewalls.

Tear Down the Wall?

What happens when you have trouble reaching a particular site?

In this recent Comcast Forum topic:
»Problems connecting to Citibank with Comcast

Some customers having trouble reaching their bank were instructed to disable their firewall. I'm not sure it helped, but it didn't seem like a very security-conscious suggestion.

Using a router as protection

Hello,
I read alot about using the router as a level of protection and I have a question. I use the Dlink 604 router and I basically just plugged my cables in and was able to connect. Do I need to go in the router settings to activate further protection measures or is that enough? There are a bunch of settings in there that I have no idea what they do and I dont want to just start clicking things as everything is working well now. I also use Zone alarm pro.
Thanks

Re: Using a router as protection

I use the same router and ZA pro. The router blocks all ports by default. You really only have to make changes to settings if you want to open ports to play multiplayer games, or use MSN messenger and things like that. Other than that, you should be protected out of the box, but you may want to go to ShieldsUp to test your ports. It was very helpful to me.

Use a router as an incoming firewall, and a software solution as an outgoing one. I personally use apps like ZA and Sysgate to keep various apps from accessing the network. My mouse driver does not need to phone home.

I agree ... Smoothwall is a very good solution. Its
easy to install and setup. It helps you reuse older
hardware that might be hanging around. It has a very
good support from the Community and good ad-on mods too..

Take the time and check out the web site ....

Re: free firewall /router (using an old computer )

the computer is acting like a router.
it is alot faster than a router most cpu's in a router is 16 bit aranging from 12 mhz to 80 mhz. some of the older one are using an 8 bit cpu @ 8 mhz

I want one!

quote:
Matt Neely, a computer security expert for a major financial firm, says you can find bare-bones firewall devices for even less. "You can get a decent one on sale for 10 or 20 bucks," says Neely. "They make a great gift. I give them out like candy on the holidays."
Where can I find one of these?
