Phantom gaming console's rough road
(old news - 10:43AM Saturday Nov 27 2004)
tags: business · gaming
How do you create the vaporware king of all time? Take one part dumb terminal with an ethernet connection, take an individual with a history of business failure, make repeated promises, file lawsuits against websites that claim you don't know what you're doing, then eventually run out of money before fielding a product. The Wired News rank of 3rd biggest vaporware product of all time might have been generous, as filings indicate Infinium labs is out of money and almost out of time.

Maybe they will sue Wired because they were not Number 1?

And yet they have not edited it to replace it with Duke Nukem: Forever.

Re: Sue Wired!

No, they gave Duke Nukem Forever the biggest honor by granting them the "Lifetime Achievement Award" go to the page 1 of the Wired article.

A quote from that page.
.....I wouldn't be surprised if dictionaries actually began printing it: 'vaporware: n. See Duke Nukem Forever.'" .....

Eh, they'll get the money. I'm sure there are tons of clueless investors who think that this is a "neat idea."

Easy man, it's saturday morning! Most users reading this article are still slurping their coffee and are half-naked in front of the PC expecting light reading.

You have to go back to page 2 of 3 for that.
Edit: page 1 of 3. They got the lifetime achievement award :-D.

Man I can't wait until Half-Life 3 in 2009.

Haha thx!

A Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Duke Nukem Forever on the suggestion of reader Jeff White, who wrote, "First proposed in 1801 (or something close to that), Duke Nukem Forever has now come to define the term 'vaporware.' I wouldn't be surprised if dictionaries actually began printing it: 'vaporware: n. See Duke Nukem Forever.'"

Steam?

As far as I have read, Phantom is more about being an online delivery service for games and less about the console hardware (which is pretty suspect so far anyway). As much as I dislike the way Steam has been rammed down the throats of HL-2 players, it seems like they've got the basic system that Phantom is trying to produce. The business model is different (1 time buy vs contracted subscription) but the result is the same.

Content right to your home via broadband means cheaper prices for the consumer, more profit margin for the developer and bupkiss for the production/distribution companies. It's *got* to be the next model for entertainment sales (music/video/software). It's just a matter of time once broadband becomes ubiquitous.

Not that Infinium was ever going to be the company to make it happen. It's just that I think they had the right basic idea and then completely fouled it up. If it's going to be done with gaming, either Sony or MS (or both!) will probably do it. I really hope it won't be MS...

Both, Microsoft is already playing with a future Xbox2 including more online service and Media Center integration. It will endup in:

Games on demand
Music on demand
Movies on demand
and we can dream about TV programs on demand

Exactly! TV that really fits your needs: you watch what you want, when you want it.

The problem is as far as I can tell, they were going to be offering some fairly inane older PC games...

That market they're reaching for is already going to be filled either by Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft with game consoles, or by your incumbent cable or phone company and whatever vendor they pick for set-top boxes.

There's simply no way Infinium could break into that big boy's club even if they do launch a legit product.

Yes and no. Of course a good marketing budget isn't bad, but the console itself is very powerful and brought some innovations (HD, XB Live with chat) that help them to overcome Sony.

Yea, a P3 700Mhz, 128mb RAM, 20(?) gig hard drive and a modified geforce 3 is powerful to these standards.

8GB or 10GB drive depending on whether your console has a WD(8GB) or Seagate(10GB) drive. Both are partitioned only to use 8GB.

Considering that your display is a 27+ inch NTSC television at 640x480, that seems to be plenty. When you have a 19-21 inch monitor at 1600x1200 or higher resolution, with super-duper-ultra-crispy graphics capabilities, that's when you need heavy-duty hardware to back it up.

Plug a PC running virtually nothing except the game into a standard-definition TV, set the resolution accordingly (640x480 - 1024x768 at low-ish texture quality), and you'll have console-grade framerates like the XBox or PS2.

Plug a standard console system into the average gamer's computer monitor, crank up the resolution and texture quality to the upper range (not actually possible, I don't think), and you'll lag like any other low-end computer.

Comparing console systems to PCs is like comparing a Mack truck to a Ferrari. They both do well at their jobs, and have similar innards, but they are built for entirely different environments, and should not be put in a race against each other.

Heck even my 17 inch monitor at 1024x768 is pretty good

Even if the Phantom were released I would buy an old NES over it any day...:D...at least the NES proved itself in its hey day

Some of the older games, while primitive by today's standards, still aren't bad.

And still are available on PC...so why is this console attractive for that purpose?

Re: Steam?

This console will likely end up being more a proof-of-concept than anything else. After this company sells a few of these devices to show that something like this is marketable, they'll either be bought up by one of the big boys, or they'll sell themselves out as consultants.

Of course, it's more likely that they'll simply fade into oblivion, and their product will be resurrected a few years down the road by a larger company. Oh well, nothing wrong with a little optimism

I wonder how much

of the money is going off shore, to Bahamian bank accounts perhaps. Looking at the past history of this business tycoon
he sure seems to have burned through a lot of venture capital with nothing to show for it.

Could Be Worse

said by Wired Article linked above:

So far the firm has incurred a net loss of $27.25 million since its inception in late 2002, and it lists total assets of $1.29 million and total liabilities of $10.69 million in its balance sheet as at September 30th this year.
You know what is sad? Having survived the 1999-2004 IT purges and seen Enron and Aldelphia and... I don't think 27.25 mil is all that bad

Edit: One more thing.... Why do I need to buy their console again? My PC is better. Sounds like all I really need is a browser and user id/pwd...
