A Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Duke Nukem Forever on the suggestion of reader Jeff White, who wrote, "First proposed in 1801 (or something close to that), Duke Nukem Forever has now come to define the term 'vaporware.' I wouldn't be surprised if dictionaries actually began printing it: 'vaporware: n. See Duke Nukem Forever.'" -- Jesus saves, but only Buddha makes incremental backups.

| Steam? As far as I have read, Phantom is more about being an online delivery service for games and less about the console hardware (which is pretty suspect so far anyway). As much as I dislike the way Steam has been rammed down the throats of HL-2 players, it seems like they've got the basic system that Phantom is trying to produce. The business model is different (1 time buy vs contracted subscription) but the result is the same.
Content right to your home via broadband means cheaper prices for the consumer, more profit margin for the developer and bupkiss for the production/distribution companies. It's *got* to be the next model for entertainment sales (music/video/software). It's just a matter of time once broadband becomes ubiquitous.
Not that Infinium was ever going to be the company to make it happen. It's just that I think they had the right basic idea and then completely fouled it up. If it's going to be done with gaming, either Sony or MS (or both!) will probably do it. I really hope it won't be MS...

| The problem is as far as I can tell, they were going to be offering some fairly inane older PC games...
That market they're reaching for is already going to be filled either by Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft with game consoles, or by your incumbent cable or phone company and whatever vendor they pick for set-top boxes.

1 edit | Considering that your display is a 27+ inch NTSC television at 640x480, that seems to be plenty. When you have a 19-21 inch monitor at 1600x1200 or higher resolution, with super-duper-ultra-crispy graphics capabilities, that's when you need heavy-duty hardware to back it up.
Plug a PC running virtually nothing except the game into a standard-definition TV, set the resolution accordingly (640x480 - 1024x768 at low-ish texture quality), and you'll have console-grade framerates like the XBox or PS2.
Plug a standard console system into the average gamer's computer monitor, crank up the resolution and texture quality to the upper range (not actually possible, I don't think), and you'll lag like any other low-end computer.
Comparing console systems to PCs is like comparing a Mack truck to a Ferrari. They both do well at their jobs, and have similar innards, but they are built for entirely different environments, and should not be put in a race against each other.

| Re: Steam? This console will likely end up being more a proof-of-concept than anything else. After this company sells a few of these devices to show that something like this is marketable, they'll either be bought up by one of the big boys, or they'll sell themselves out as consultants.
Of course, it's more likely that they'll simply fade into oblivion, and their product will be resurrected a few years down the road by a larger company. Oh well, nothing wrong with a little optimism

So far the firm has incurred a net loss of $27.25 million since its inception in late 2002, and it lists total assets of $1.29 million and total liabilities of $10.69 million in its balance sheet as at September 30th this year. You know what is sad? Having survived the 1999-2004 IT purges and seen Enron and Aldelphia and... I don't think 27.25 mil is all that bad
Edit: One more thing.... Why do I need to buy their console again? My PC is better. Sounds like all I really need is a browser and user id/pwd...
