Miller tries to right capsizing ship
(old news - 11:49AM Tuesday Nov 09 2004)
tags: business
In September of 2002, in an interview with the Washington Post (exemplifying AOL's attitude), AOL Broadband President Lisa Hook called broadband "a side issue" and proudly declared that narrowband was "going to be around forever". Lisa Hook, however, will not be. In a letter to employees, AOL chief Jonathan Miller stated she'd be one of several executives fired in order to "shake-up an online giant that has been criticized for moving too slowly."

"right a capsizing ship"?

How about a couple of MK-46 torpedos and get it over with?

Come on now!

Are you really thinking of taking on a target of that size with a couple of torpedoes that only carry a warhead of 98lbs HE?

Please, this situation totally calls for a spread of Mark 48 ADCAPS (650lbs of HE warheads) launched at the braodsides of the AOL ship.

Sure it's already crippled and you may be thinking that 46 fish are all you need, but the AOL ship has thick skin to last this long as it is, and you need every last ounce of explosives to send her to Davy Jones' locker, once and for all!

I wonder......

Was Lisa Hook married to Baghdad Bob?

Dial up may be around forever and neither will she.

Just goes to show you if you stick your head in the sand, you will be passed by.

What AOL needed to do is make those deals with broadband suppliers and take out the bloat most don't want.

Lisa Hook is that dorky chick with the glasses on the Television advertisements that American Online has been running. AOL is going to need a lot more chairs for all the angry customers who think AOL dialup will be around forever.

Re: I wonder......

"AOL Broadband President Lisa Hook called broadband "a side issue" and proudly declared that narrowband was "going to be around forever"."

She made that comment but this was supposedly her title within the company. "Three executives — Lisa A. Hook, who headed the company's high-speed, or broadband, initiative". Well now we know why the company is having problems. When your head of your broadband unit is saying broadband is just a side issue. No wonder they can't get a leg up in the market. She is practically saying the division she is suppose to be running is pointless.

Not to mention calling it "narrowband". Narrowband is a communication channel with a bandwidth of less than 28.8 Kbps.

So, yah, it will be around forever. *chuckles*.

I put about a hundred in the garbage about a month ago. More polycarbonate plastic going into are already overcrowded landfills.

People a thousand years from now are going to dig these discs up and wonder why they are finding so many plastic Frisbee's that say AOL on them.

I can say one think about the AOL discs, when they are sent in metal containers, they become excellant reusable snail mail packaging. I just save the metal container and dump the plastic disc. If I have to mail a SP2 disc to someone, I just pop it in a AOL metal container, wrap some tape around it and mail it out with a new address label. The metal containers are postal indestructible.

I especially like the phony wood and metal tin ones. The CDs make great bird deterrents in the fruit trees. Spinning around in the trees they look like Christmas ornaments in July.
So keep them coming while you can AOL !

Useful things to do with AOL metal tins

The American Online metal tins make for a good dish to use with mouse poison pellets. When you are done, put the lid on and throw it in the garbage.

No accounting for brains

I guess she was one of Donald Trumps Apprentices right?

What an idiot... I guess she has been too busy to keep up with technology. "Narrowband".... where do they dig these idiots up? I got a perfect job for her... Village Idiot for a village full of idiots.

AOL needs to die. They have been behind the curve since the beginning. They are the "Internet for Dummies"...

The scariest book I ever saw on a shelf at B&N:

"AOL for Dummies"

Really, now...how dumbed-down does it have to get?

Call me an elitist if you must, but there really are people who shouldn't own a computer, and especially an Internet-connected computer.

Got Maggots?

AOL isn't dead yet, but the gaping wounds should be drawing flies, and the associated maggots.

It's only inevitable before the buzzards are tearing at the cold corpse of this lumbering dinosaur.

It couldn't happen soon enough. The stock price will get low enough and someone will gobble them up in a hostile take over.

One day we'll all wake up to a news item on BBR titled "AOL purchased by company XYZ".

AOL Split Four Ways!

See »slashdot.org/articles/04/11/09/1···20&tid=1

AOL To bE Split Into 4 Units
Posted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday November 09, @12:13PM
from the all-four-dedicated-to-mailing-me-crap dept.

unsupported writes "AOL is apparently dividing into four units to provide a clear direction for each. The four divisions are as follows: Audience (Advertising, and AOL IM, Moviefon, Mapquest, Netscape.com), Access (dial-up, highspeed), AOL Europe (for the foreigners), and Digital Services (Premium services, phone and music subscription). "
This is exciting. Let's take bets on the order in which each of these "divisions" goes down the tubes, and in what horrifying manner...

AOL is really going down and it paid us to help it

Last week, in a desperate effort to gain more costumers, AOL offered a "small promotion targeted to a restricted number of potential costumers", where all news costumers would receive a $100 gift card for Amazon...

The word got out and this deal leaked on Fat Wallet and Ben's Bargains... The URL was closed within one hour after that more than 6000 new accounts had been opened. The GC should arrive by the end of the week and next week, I bet that AOL is going to lose 6000 newly signed costumers...

So, pull out your calculators: 6000 x $100 = $600 000 in gift certificates given away in couple hours... I hope they got a deal from Amazon on the price of the GC.

I expect to receive my GC by the end of the week, and I will rapidly close my "50-day free" account. I will then spend my GC on Amazon and will be happy to have helped AOL go down...

Re: 26.4?

You are going to make me dig ain't ya....

Compuserve was the first "Internet Company".

"The Source" was created by a different guy (Von Miester I think).

IBM created Prodigy.

I think Apple started up something called AppleLink...

Then I seem to remember that AppleLink turned in the the dreaded AOL... Then their was also a frenzy of buying and merging going on... More then the most popular whore house if I recall right...

Anyway... it went from bad to worse and that's for sure...
