Sci-Network trumps Internet2 speeds
The New Scientist has the latest on the National Lambda Rail project (NLR), a 10 gigabyte per user research network that makes Internet2 look like a 300 baud Hayes compatible. Both networks use Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) to send different wavelengths or "lambdas" of light through a fiber optic cable simultaneously; while Internet2 dedicates one lambda to their network, the NLR dedicates forty. The National Lambda Rail website has additional information.

Re: Connect me now, please!

I'm wondering, what is the difference between this fiber and the FIBER deployment of say, Verizon?
Is it only the switching equipment, or are they multiplexing an entire set of fibers to aggregate the signals in a MEGABANDWIDTH upstream, because if VZ can send 100+ megabits upstream with one fiber, say, 50-100 can get to that 10gigabyte (bit?) stream in no time flat.. but need some serious switching equipment and data aggregation, but I'm curious who needs something like that? surely not a consumer, Unless they wanted to download every MP3 file ever made, hahaha.. in say 1/2 hour

Re: Connect me now, please!

Never going to happen for the home user. This is for Government and EDU domain use only. Sorry. I on the other hand, am excited about it - more stuff for me to play with! However, this network, just like Internet-2 will not benefit web browsing or day-to-day use a home user would enjoy.

*It only works between connected .gov/.edu facilities.*
I can never stress the above any more without sounding like a moron. Oops - too late...

Re: But can it beat uncapped cable?

I don't think so. For the most part, cable is available anywhere you go. And yes, I know there are still places that don't have it. But the point is that tell me about advances like this when I have fiber sitting at my door.

Until then... Cable s much faster right now..

Gigabytes? No, Gigabits per second

Whoever posted that should read the article, it's bits, not bytes.

And anyway, what is so amazing about this? It's a research network, using everyday DWDM technology.

I worked at a place 4 years ago that lit up 8 10 gigabit wavelengths on a national backbone. They could have lit 32 at the time, on a single fiber, but didn't need them.

And this was on the "regular" Internet.

Do they really believe that 10 gigabit lambdas are not possible on the "regular" Internet? It makes the NLR nothing special at all, just a place for researchers to pass their packets faster, since they ALL get the wavelenghts.

But it is naive to think that the Internet can't achieve this.

1 byte = 8 bits
so anything in bits can also be expressed in bytes.

Re: Gigabytes? No, Gigabits per second

Did you even read the article?

Yes, you can express bits as bytes, IF YOU CONVERT IT.

The article says 10 gigaBITS, the person who posted the link to the article said 10 gigaBYTES.

That would mean, 80 gigabits, which is NOT what the article said.

Also, people don't generally express bandwidth in bytes. No telco sells a 193kilobyte/sec T1, and no one sells a 10.25Mbyte/sec ethernet NIC. They sell 1.544mbit/sec T1's and 100mbit/sec NICs.

Re: Gigabytes? No, Gigabits per second

the person that posted this said its 10 gigabytes ... what would the point be ... there isnt a single interconnect to the cpu that could even handle that much raw bandwidth... the only devices that could even haddle that much bandwidth is a high end switch/router what would be the point

isn't that the point? Faster connections between routers and switches will eventually result in a faster connection to edge devices.

we should be so lucky

When was that release date again? This is even better than my BPL connection... I just hope it's as cheap....
