FTC finally acts on seedy outfit

"Reformed" spammer Sanford Wallace was recently sued by Uncle Sam for selling anti-spyware software that installed spyware instead of removing it. While Wallace claims he's simply being an ingenious businessman, the FTC told him this weekend to fully shut down his operations, and has banned him from creating any new "advertising-related business entity" without the FTC's approval. Wallace's websites took advantage of browser exploits to scare consumers in the direction of his bogus spyware removal apps: "Spy Wiper" and "Spy Deleter".

Give Him a Computer

I say give him a computer with all of his spyware installed on it and tell him to remove all said spyware without any tools to help him. Other than what is included with the OS.

That should only leave him Regedit.exe. And lets not forget, lets make it an XP Home machine where he will not have admin privilegdes.

Oh, lets not forget. We put him in a cell with Bubba and tell him that he has to have all the spywar off the computer with in 1 hour. All this while trying to fend off Bubba.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Spyware

You can't protect people from their ingorance. Co-worker had her machine cleaned 3x in the past 6 months, same problem each time. Computers get so loaded with spyjunk cannot access internet. Told her to drop AOL, but won't because kids use for I/M and doesn't want to drop email address. She signed up for one of these spyware 'removers' even though i had loaded Ad-aware & Spybot on her computer. Arghhhhh.
Makes me wish i had never turned her on to broadband, her machine one of those zombies sending spam (or worse) all over net.

If the kids are old enough...work with them on running regular updates of Ad-aware and Spybot. I had the same issue with my wife's co-worker. On the third visit I met the lady's older son. After talking to him and showing him what to do, the computer has been relatively clean since then. I lost a free dinner every few weeks but I still think its worth it to have one less zombie on the internet
