What next?I havent seen a pop up/under in a year or so. The problem is, I dont know if its Google, ZAP, AdShield, IE, my host files, or something else stopping them. Some of the blockers I am using must be redundant and consume resources, but which ones? If pop ups return to my browser I will just keep adding more junk to stop them. Thats not really winning the battle in my opinion.

Re: What next?FWIW, I've been using WebWasher since.. I think 2002? I've NEVER seen a pop-up or pop-under since then, period. I know that there have been some recent bugs with Mozilla/FF's pop-up stopper, and some workarounds for getting around IE6 SP2's pop-up blocker as well, but nothing has ever gotten through WW. Defense-in-depth works well folks, just try it.

I've found that most advertisers aren't using traditional popups/unders anymore. They use DHTML to make ads that move around on top of the web page. I've even seen flash ads, complete with annoying sound effects, that move around the page. Pop-up blockers do nothing to stop these type of ads, that's why you really need an ad blockers.

I haven't seen any kind of ads at home on a regular basis for more than two years now. Privoxy is a wonderful thing. Check it out at » www.privoxy.org

I hate them all.If they realized that I will never ever purchase anything from any company that employs popup or popunder advertising, it may help.

By default no. You can email me if you would like to license the list.
Any1 else find that odd? Licensing a text file containing nothing but a bunch of ad mills. Ill continue to use Firefox + Adblock.

Re: =XI get a few pop-unders in IE/WinXP SP2 also, so in Tools->Pop-Up Blocker Settings I have set the protection level to High, as MS noted in the CNET article. We will see how much trouble it causes with wanted sites. But I was getting about the same amount of pop-unders in Firefox 1.0PR also, so it is not just an IE6 thing.

No pop-ups on OperaSince I've been using Opera on my desktop I have had zero pop-up windows. It even kills the pop-ups that sneak up on my Firefox browser. No idea what they are doing right, but I like it.

Hosts file+Mozilla+Ad Subtract Pro=No PopupsI've been using a three pronged approach to preventing popup ads. I haven't seen a single one since starting to use Mozilla with a hosts file and Ad Subtract Pro. The version of Ad Subtract I've been using is the older 2.55 one, as the 3.0 version doesn't really work well with Mozilla. This combination has passed most of the popup tests on some browser test pages that have been mentioned at times in the Security and Stopping Spam forums. There are a few that seem to evade these methods, and when I see them, I usually will never go back to the site that is hosting them again.
And having a good popup stopper can also prevent some types of drive by download spyware, which are often delivered by popup ads through ActiveX on completely unrelated sites (free webspace providers are notorious for this, especially cjb.net).

No popups with FirefoxI have not experienced any popups or rich media ads because of Firefox and Adblock. Safari also blocks popups, but there is not as robust of an extension like Adblock for it.

Re: No popups with FirefoxAd Block is cool but I don't think it will beable to do what Ad Muncher will be able to do in a new update soon and it can do it on some websites now! You know how when you go to www.rottentomatoes.com and you get a ad right before homepage comes up ? It then it has a link that says continue to rottentomatoes or whatever website you were planning to go to.
Well Ad Muncher will beable to get rid of these all together. Some of them Ad Muncher can do not but ot all of them yet! That feature is going to be so cool because I don't know of any other program that would do that. Not one. Inless I am mistaken of course.

Re: Popups? what are popups?I know this is off topic since this is another MS bashing thread but everyday I am seeing more and more pop ups with Firefox. It was good while it lasted not having to run 2 or 3 apps to stop them but looks like that day is quickly coming to an end as Firefox's popularity grows.

Re: Popups? what are popups?Same here. And on top of that Firefox sometimes blocks stuff I DO want to popup as well and even says it blocks a popup when none exists on the site (must be some complicated javascript going on). They also need the temporary setting that exists in IE SP2, rather than having to put every site on the permanent list. As far as I can tell, IE SP2's popup blocker works much better.

Opera. . .Tools->Quick Preferences-> Block unwanted pop-upsand no more pop-ups for me. I have noticed some new pop-ups getting past IE6 on the medium setting. High setting stops them but still doesn't address the (more annoying) floating ads.

There is a bug in Firefox to get popups through. Some sites have javascript code that somehow tricks firefox into thinking a popup was requested. It only happens "onExit()" or "onClose()"? Other than that I get one unrequested popup a week. Thanks to open source we could see a fix in the next release or in the nighly builds.

No fancy browsers or edited hostsNorton Internet Security 2005 kills 100% of banners, pop ups, and flash crap. SP2's pop up blocker is half decent, but Windows Firewall is still a joke, so I need NIS on there anyway, and it does a much better job.
