Verizon's wireless broadband push
(old news - 09:18AM Tuesday Oct 12 2004)
tags: wireless · bandwidth
Verizon has announced the company will expand its EV-DO wireless broadband service to 16 additional markets before the end of the year, reports Reuters. The service, already available in parts of 20 cities, costs $80 a month for unlimited data consumption, offers downstream speeds up to 500kbps, and upstream speeds around 100kbps. Verizon's most likely competitor could be Flarion's 1.5Mbps (and 30ms) Flash-OFDM technology, which Nextel so far has only deployed in North Carolina.

wireless latency

So if Flash-OFDM has 30ms latency, anybody know what Verizon's EV-DO is like? I'm using their regular NationalAccess product and latency to the first hop averages around 500ms. For the work I do, remote access to servers via command line interfaces, latency is far more important than downstream bandwidth. 500ms is sufficient, but only just. Is EV-DO better than what I have?

I guess you wont be using voIP over that connection. Why is latency so high?

Re: wireless latency

It's no different than the typical lag on a cell phone conversation. You don't typically notice it much unless you can hear the other end (i.e. call your land line, put it on speakerphone).

Actually 500ms is not too bad for VoIP, pretty much like regular calls via satellite. The problem with VoIP over NationalAccess is that I only get maybe 20kbps upstream and my VoIP software doesn't have a high-complexity codec (eg g.723), so there just isn't enough bandwidth. I'm using a Mac with a bluetooth connection to a Motorola 710 which is in my back pocket. If I want to talk to somebody, I have to disconnect and use the handset like God intended.

As for why the latency is so high, I'd be interested in knowing that myself. The lag is definitely between me and the first pingable router, so it is likely to be from somewhere in the wireless delivery network.

Re: Who gives a shit about wireless

It isn't wi-fi, its cellular internet. 500 kbps could be useful for those who need internet access outside in the field. Why does everyone just assume all broadband is made for the home user?

Re: Who gives a shit about wireless

Yes, Verizon's EVDO service is extremely valuable for me. I commute to NYC every day on the train ( 1hour each way) and get a ton of work done on my commute. It is worth every penny. Also have connectivity in airports and hotels when I travel. This also has saved me a ton of money versus dishing out $10/day in hotel rooms for Internet access.

People, this isn't to replace DSL or Cable for the home user it is for those that are mobile and need wireless connectivity in the field.

All in all, I am very happy with the service.

Re: Who gives a shit about wireless

I currently use the aircards myself and I love them. I use sprint and Verizon for work , depending on the area. 15 k a sec down usually on the verizon network. And latency at about 400 ms.

Like you said its not a broadband replacement. But is invaluable when your mobile to be able to vpn to work and fix issues remotely while you are on the side of the road. I do it and leave them run almost all day 12 hours a day depending on where I am going. Not to mention the internal Im services to save on cellular minutes

Hrmn, considering that wireless is the future of communications (look at cell phones) i'd be investing in wireless technology like intel instead of 'not giving a shit' like this short-sighted loser

Cell phones?

I hope not. If I should look at cell phones to see the future of communications, then we are headed back to the dark ages.

My cell phone fails to work at the one location I would most like it to work -- my home. And it isn't just a tiny hole in the coverage area. I need to drive 5 miles to find a reliable cell signal.

Maybe they should be working on fiber, but it's going to take at least 20 years to roll it out. What should we use in the meantime?

Those of us in dialup hell would kill for 500 down 100 up.

Re: Who gives a shit about wireless

Yeah, I live far enought away that anything other than phone lines and power will run out here. Wireless connection would be fine with me. Now I also like to game so I'd LIKE to have something lower than 500ms, I get about 250-900 depending, and that is over 56k! (Good dial-up commpany, Shentel)

If anything like that was out here I'd get it, but yes truly ment for field use.

Re: Who gives a shit about wireless

You possibly could get 1xrtt CDMA or EDGE GSM connection, good for around 150kbps and approximately the same latency, but $$$

Re: Who gives a shit about wireless

1x and 1xrtt are cheap now if you purchase an agreement. I run about 40 megs a day over it on verizon and pay less then $75 a month. But I also have company phones threw verizon as well.

Re: Who gives a shit about wireless

Cheap considering that they are mobile, pricy compared to dialup, dsl or cable. If I was mobile, and had 'good' connectivity at home, I'd be using a datacard or tethered phone. At home, my 26.95 dsl (1500/256) is cheap, and at work, my DS-3 (12 users) is damn fast

Ok.. no more fighting on evdo vs. wifi... they are now compatible... or better said... complementary... you can now do evdo sharing over wifi using a small converter router...
