FTC stops bogus anti-spyware firm
(old news - 07:05PM Friday Oct 08 2004)
tags: legal · spyware
In one of the first government suits targeting purveyors of spyware, Uncle Sam has sued "reformed" spammer Sanford Wallace for selling anti-spyware software that installed spyware instead of removing it. Such bogus applications resemble successful programs like AdAware and Spybot, but in reality take advantage of browser holes to scare consumers into buying useless product. Recall our interview with the Center for Democracy and Technology? They were responsible for filing the complaint with the FTC. Wallace defends himself in this AP report.

It seems to have migrated here from Slashdot and how it got to Slashdot, I'm not certain exactly.

If fact, there once was a Userfriendly (www.userfriendly.org) that illustrated how some people sat waiting for a new news posting in order to be first to post a comment. Truth be told, I've met people who had done this and brag about it. Let's just say they aren't exactly "normal", if there is such a thing.

Well, you see ... Once apon a time slashdot was cool. And then slashdot got infested with n00bs and trolls and B1FF types. When these morons took over, stuff like the first post thing was part of what they did. So now, while slashdot is no longer cool (the fora at least), it still a reputation of cool, so newbies think acting like that is cool. And of course the B1FFs and trolls that ruined slashdot are looking for virgin web to rape.

noob problem

it's like all you have to do is "say" that you will help someone's pc and they will blindly agree to whatever EULA you put in front of them.

m glad that the govt is doing something about this.

Re: noob problem

Sure, the fact that they bought spyware removeal tools from a popup ad indicated their inexperiance, but the isn't solely a newbie problem. You see, the ads to sell the faulty spyware removal tools are created by adware. If you read the Yahoo article they link too, you'd know that this first round of adware was drive by installed from some banner ads. My mother's Windows box is currently infected by this sort of software. (It's some adware that advertises all sorts of things. Sometimes it advertises anti spyware software.) I consider myself a hacker (not a cracker BTW), but I've had a hard time with this particular one. Don't know if it's related to this guy's activities or not.

Oh, and just in case you got your hopes up, this dosn't mean the government is taking spy/ad/malware seriously. This is a *civil* suit filed by the FTC. If they where serious, the FBI CyberCrime Division would get off it's collective behind and file some *criminal* charges. But no, they're off hunting teenagers with some craking skills and/or copyright violators or something. (BTW, I didn't say pirates because equating copyright violation with piracy is slander of the hightest order.)

Re: noob problem

hoi!

like u i know something about hacking but i wont call myselfe a hacker
- maybe a n00bie ^^

the way sanford spread that lame mass exploit is really pissing me off.

after i found that 0.bat in my system32 folder i
connected 2 the given ip and found myselfe on that
fucking adserver.

the funny thing about this ftp-account sanford uses
to transfer his stuff is that it has permission 2 browse
any folder of that server - ok u may not write
but in one word - thats a big security hole - u could
even download important config- or logfiles!

and thats the point i dont get - by all means -
sanford hacked me - sanford hacked u - so why not hack back?

i really wonder why that server is still up - there r much
exploits for his ftp-client for example.

i dont want to make ppl do something illegal!

i just wonder...

Re: eacceleration Stop Sign

It is now listed as reformed, although not yet particularly effective.

Sanford Wallace was . . .

a spamming scumbag criminal when he had Cyber Promotions.

He hasn't changed one bit. I hope they throw his ass in jail for his theft, fraud, vandalism, trespass, and racketeering.

Re: Sanford Wallace was . . .

they should go after them for illegally using someone elses intellectual material ie: the code and systems used to scan

and when they click the magic Agree button the user has just given away any protection they had in the first place.

now i do not agree with spyware/adware and there are already mediums that are used to advertise products, one of them is T.V. then there's radio.

the thing with adware is that the product that the person or company is trying to sell my be illegal in the country in question which would make the entire idea of using the ad's in the first place useless.

leave ads as banners, do not add cookies, and don't mess with activex, should be the ground rules for internet advertising.

Charging Users

It's bad enough that the moron deceived people with fraudulent software, but he also charged them for it. You'd think to get wider distribution, he would have offered it for free, but I suppose that also might have gotten him caught sooner.

I recommend changing his name from Spamford to Spamfraud.

ya know what they say, if you can't trick them the old way try a new trick...

Next target...

www.winpopupguard.com

These guys advertise blocking popups and such all while infecting systems and advertising via, guess what ?... Pop-ups, especially when you search for Spyware or Adware.

And even more interesting are several forums posts around the internet from people who tried it out and found it contained Spyware.

They've also got a "partner" site called winantivirus.com.

Avenue A blocked by Spybot when trying Yahoo link

Spybot just blocked Avenue A from loading when I clicked on the "has sued" link for Yahoo!. I made the mistake of using IE instead of Firefox.
