Congress unable to agree...for now...
(old news - 06:40PM Thursday Oct 07 2004)
tags: legal · Fileswapping
Senator and Musician Orrin Hatch drafted the "Induce Act" in the hopes of making p2p developers legally responsible for what gets traded on their networks. Unfortunately it wound up being so controversial that today it was shelved, with no indication of when it could be dusted off. Nearly all consumer groups and many companies had rallied together to warn Hatch his proposal could severely harm innovation on the internet.

Watch carefully. 'Shelved' is a Washington term that means, wait 'till the attention dies down and quietly slide the bill through attached to another one when nobody's looking. It's usually attached to a popular bill that does something good, and voting against a popular bill because of the lousy bill that's attached would be a death blow to any elected official.

That's the same way the Patriot Act was amended last year with the unpopular Patriot Act 2 which stripped even more of our basic privacy and due process rights, and brought the U.S. one step closer to being a police state.

Agreed. He looks devious, plasticine, and conniving. Utah, please vote anything into his Senate seat. Even a jack mormon will do.

Yours is a failed attempt at sarcasm, me thinks. Do you know what a jack mormon is? (the wiki-p also has a rather inadequate definition).

I got it from a post to NANAE (news.admin.net-abuse.email)
a few weeks ago when I decided I'd had enough of its
intended target's rantings every time a news item about P2P
was posted. It was originally directed at a poster named
MORIS, who would repeat the same drivel over and over about
group regulars being SPEWS (Spam Prevention And Early
Warning System) puppets. I found it wouldn't post correctly
as ASCII art so I did a screen cap and replaced the caption
in the sign with one of my own.

It has actually been posted quite often in that group,
always aimed at one or more of the NANAE trolls. There is
also a kind of questionnaire floating around where you rate
someone's trolling by things such as flame factor, trolling
factor, AOL-lameness factor, and so on, and even makes
suggestions on what the troll can do. If I see it again
sometime, I'll post it.

They just as well shelve it....

Anyone hear of FTP?? hell with newer IM technology coming out you will (on some multi network IM clients) create your own P2p connections, you can even decide what ports to use..

There still is IRC so, the more harder they push, the more harder it is going to be to track..

Unfortuneately? I think the shelving of the induce act is one of the best we could hope for. Not for piracy reasons, just so it doesnt turn into another patriot act.

Internet?

If they pass this law, wouldn't that make the internet illegal? How about routers and switches that pass the data? This senator is a moron.

This act goes much more deeper than software. It would make any device or medium that "makes it easier" to infringe on copyrighted material. Hence recordable media, etc.

Which Orrin Song Is Your Fave?

I was shocked when I listened to one of the songs on his site and it wasn't half-bad! It's in Real Audio format. Too bad he's still a dork.
