Thats not with drawl, thats stupidity... If you need the internet to know how to boil an egg, you probably shouldn't be in the kitchen anyway.
On another note, I know that I feel a sense of disconnection when I am without internet access for an extended period of time. Of course, these days its hard to go somewhere where you can't get connected in one way or another.

I think it's all true...I know there is something about this withdrawl issue---my parents have a summer house in Massachussetts that they share with my Uncle. We have cable TV, and phones and all thta good stuff. Plenty of stuff to do there, and when you're there, you're there to get away from the news, not to stay with it. So, I've been asked if I could "lend" one of my desktop machines to that house, so when someone is there, they could get on the Net. If that doesn't work, my Dad (most likely through pressure from my Mom lol) asked me to look into some laptop choices for him. I asked why they wanted the PC on vacation, and they said that they feel too disconnected when they're without a PC fror a few days. Wait till they have to use dial-up after they've been used to a 10Mb/1Mb connection for 3 years.

It's called...get a life. People are too addicted. If I have no internet for that amount of time and am not working I am outside enjoying life and seeing new things.
People should try that sometime.

Re: It's called...It's even more alarming when kids get addicted to the internet and console games. There are a lot of obese children out there who are learning bad habits at an early age. Up until the '80's, when kids had nothing to do, they went outside and rode bikes, tossed balls, or played games that required exertion. Parents are now using the internet and console games as substitute baby-sitters. They don't want to be bothered because they believe their kids are hindrances to their own lives.

Sounds familiarI suppose I would feel a certain amount of deprivation but fortunately there is the Cartoon Channel. Boom, and, the Tele Tubbies to help me through the withdrawal symptoms.;) OK you can scream if you want:) The main difficulty I have had when I did not have access at home was the irritation of using a computer I wasn't comfortable with. You know how it is you have your mouse set just so, the fonts such-in-such, DPI set your way, Icon's setup the way you like them, files here, mail there, etc. The real irritation is not being able to look stuff up.

Makes you wonder why they all have antennaes stuck to their heads though, doesn't it? Maybe they are all really 'jacked into the 'net 24x7, and you would never guess it from their outward appearance. If that's the future of the "wired generation" and civilization in general.. whoa.

No I couldn'tI'm no addict, but I use the Internet for everything. Directions, recipes, communication, news, you name it. This day in age, I think the Internet is a part of our life. It's everywhere we go and we can find out whatever we need in a matter of seconds. I think the only sad thing is that people don't know how to do things on their own because of the Internet. For example, many people I know can't read a map. Why? Because they've always had MapQuest there for them.

Re: No I couldn'tday AND age. Sorry. Pet peeve thanks to being on the internet so much is I hate when people confuse common sayings. It'd be hard, but I kind of did it, we were without internet for about 4 months earlier this year...I was still able to get on from work because I have to, but we survived, watched a lot of movies and played a lot of board games and cards. (This was when Ohio was having it's "rain like you need to build an ark" season earlier this year, so not much to do outside other than said ark building. lol )

Re: No I couldn'tThe internet addiction maybe a bad thing in the long run... many have been brainwashed if their not careful what they read and what they do. most act like its their new way of life but it isn't... you become antisocial and slowly lose your firm grasp of reality

I have to agree. The internet is not only a way for me to be connected to everything from news, information, and so on, but it also is my way to work from home and maintain the systems at work. I have went without it for a few days here and there, but it is important for me to have. It has become part of my life and I just can't see myself going back to what I did before I had the internet. I get everything done so much faster.

Re: I would surviveIt's not just broadband it's just about everything.
We went 13 days without electricity. Yeah, that sucked. Then found out my satelite dish was damaged and had to wait almost a month for repairs. If I had to watch the 700 Club one more day I was going to put a bullet in my head. And now to conserve money until things get back to normal around here I've had to drop my DSL from 1.5meg down to 512 and that is killing me.
And the electricity is the one that kills you the most. It's not the loss of the air conditioning or stuff like that it's the little things.
The walking into a room and hitting the light switch knowing full well it hasn't worked in 8 days it aint gonna work now either. Or talking on the phone and starting to walk around the room and the sudden crash reminds you that you're on a corded phone because your cordless doesn't work with no power. Or turning on a shower and just jumping in expecting a nice warm shower when you hot water tank has run in 2 weeks.
So you just pack up a fishing pole and go fish for a while to get the loss of your precious technology out of your head.
Then come home and yell at your wife for not turning on the front porch light.
Then have her look at you like your an idiot because, yes, once again, the power is still out.

not as hard as I thoughtRecently spent a week at my kid sister's beach house. Took my laptop and pocket PC in case I could find a wireless AP to borrow. Nothing found on day 1 so I packed all the gear, went outside and just enjoyed sitting int the shade being at the beach. Was quite liberating. As a bonus, cell phone reception was essentially non-existent so I didn't see all the work phone calls for several days

Could I live without it?Sure... for about as long as I could live without a paycheck.
I could "live" without lots of modern conveniences (indoor plumbing, paved roads, phones, washer/dryer, microwave). But why?

That used to be meI went for a week without internet access when I took a vacation to Montauk this July, I fared pretty well due to access to a beach, pool, the sun, going out somewhere to eat every night..I enjoyed it.
It used to vary from me from 2 days to a week I used to go into withdrawal, but I'm slowly getting over that. I don't only have non-internet stuff on this computer, I also have a Gamecube to keep be occupied in times of need.
The worst that can be is if there's a blackout, with NO access to AC powered electronics, I can suffice for up to a day in this kind of situation.

What's the difference? If people aren't getting hooked on the internet, it will be something else, ex. T.V., movies, games, etc. What else is there to do these days anyway? Adventure no longer exists, most people are stuck in a routine now. We all need some sort of distraction.

PsshIf kids aint spending their time on the internet, then good ol console games there are. but then again, when I was young I had accomplished everything I wanted after I set my mind on it. I learned how to ride a 2 wheeler bike straight up in 3 days because the front of my ghetto house was a circle of road and a light post in the middle where all the crackhead teens would come out. I biked for hours a day going in circles. When I wasnt outside biking, i was playing my good ol SNES, hell i even figured out how to hook it up by the time i was in jr kindergarten ( silly parents actually tried to simply unhook it so I would play less ) then again, im still a gamer junkie and I still play sports outside with friends but having so much school and homework in the way we dont get out on weekdays. and it would seem I have developed some A.D.D... interesting...

Net Info PropagandaI'd like to know who started this net info propaganda,
according to a new "internet deprivation study" ? ? yahoo ? ? pleaseee 28 participants yea bet they were all marketing reps for yahoo. That's like those silly internet polls news says 85% of americans still believe in bush of course they fail to tell you that 85% was based on only 5 people taking the online survey (morons!!)
lets see how we can create a mass belief that will keep people on yahoo 24 hrs a day. who knows they may sell internet addiction drugs to ease your suffering, in the form of credit card perhaps.
the real truth is that 9 out of 10 people are getting sick of using the computer, internet and would like nothing more then to shut it off and do something real with their lives.
an online forum is the surest way to basterdize a belief about something, contratulations you are now a contributor to tomorrow's DISfunctional youth.
