Linksys PAP2
Cisco's new VoIP hardware
Users in our VoIP forum give their impressions of the Linksys PAP2, a new Linksys entry into the VoIP market that essentially uses Sipura SPA-2000 technology at its core - with the addition of some funky blue LEDs. Even though Cisco/Linksys manufactures the ATA-186 (the first VoIP telephone adaptor on the market), they chose to base their two new products (the RT31P2 router being the other) on Sipura technology. Some time ago Vonage shifted from the Cisco ATA-186 to the Motorola VT-1005 VoIP adaptor/router, but the Linksys products are being pitched at Staples to new VoIP users.

Well, unfortunately, the error rate as of late has risen quite a bit, and it's likely more than just simple typos. I thought it would be polite to leave feedback to ask for changes, and it generally seems not to work (a shame, honestly), so I kind of gave up. Unfortunately, it looks like I need to be more public and post instead.

Just off the top of my head, there was "J.D. Powers And Associates" (it's "Power") and "media transfer agent (MTA)" (it's "mail transfer agent" or "mail transport agent").

Blinded by the light

The hardware works just fine, but the blue led's are bright enough to read by in a dark room.

The Vonage got first go at the PAP2 device and RT31P2 three port router with 2 line telephone adapter. There will be a wireless one in the future also with phone adapter. Yes Vonage does support both units.

Two points before you buy one

There were two things that jumped out at me as I read this thread. One is that this device can ONLY be used with Vonage - it is locked to Vonage and Linksys does not give the end-user a way to unlock it to use with any other provider. And the other is that many units have been returned to Staples as defective, in some cases because of an objectionable level of hum on the line (I'd almost bet that it other cases it was because the buyer did not realize that it could not be reconfigured for use with any provider other than Vonage).

Personally, if I were going to buy a VoIP adapter, I'd buy a real Sipura (which can be used with several providers that charge less than Vonage, and in some cases offer more features (e.g. VoicePulse)). The idea of spending good money for a locked adapter that can only be used with one provider does not appeal to me at all. If a VoIP provider insists on locking the adapter so it can't be used with anyone else's service, then they doggone well ought to provide (that is, loan or give) the thing to customers gratis!

Re: Two points before you buy one

Just curious, is there any technical reason to buy a different adapter if you have the Cisco ATA-186?

What advantages might the Motorola VT-1005, the new Linksys device, or even the Sipura offer that the Cisco ATA cannot?

Thanks,
