Google 'Cracks Down' on Notifiers
Changes code to reduce third party apps
Shortly after Google released the beta for their Google Notifier system tray application, reports began to emerge that the company was cracking down on third party notification apps (previously discussed here). GMail fans seem torn over whether this is a malicious move by Google, or simply an effort to crack down on the number of applications constantly polling the service (resulting in slight DDoS conditions).

for those using Firefox and GMail, the Gmail Notifier extension has been updated to 0.3.3 to circumvent Google's new authorization scheme. update your extension here - »www.nexgenmedia.net/extensions/

Re: aw man

yes I get that much, and no none of it is spam. Frankly I spend a lot of time chatting and reading forums so it's nice that I have a plugin built into firefox (at home, I don't care as much about it at work where I'm on IE) that will show hey you've got x number of emails at gmail. It's nice because I don't have to leave a forum to go look and see whether or not I have new email.

It's not a requirement by any means, it's just a nice convienence, if I go home tonight and find out it doesn't work anymore then sure I'll try out the gmail notifier, but I hate having things running in the system tray if they don't have to be so I prolly will just skip that and start doing like I do at work, gmail auto refreshes the main page for you to check for new emails, so I'll probably just leave another browser window up when I'm expecting emails on it.

Sits There?

I've not downloaded the official notifier, but I heard it just sits in the tray, changing colors when new mail comes in. If this is true, I'm not surprised others have used 3rd party notifiers. Most probably want something to popup, perhaps like MSN Messenger does if you are logged in and you get a new message in your hotmail account.

Re: Sits There?

It does sit in the tray, but also pops up a small window when new mail arrives, along with a brief summary. Scrolls through the new messages.

When you get a new email, you a small window pops up above the tray icon that tells you the subject and a small snippet of the body of your new email. I've used PopGoestheGmail and I actually like the official plugin better. PGtGM used to always keep my computer from shutting down as well. When the box popped up asking me if I wanted to close PGtGM, it would stop the reboot or shutdown process until I clicked yes. Very annoying. I haven't tried any of the other plugins/extensions, because the official one works perfectly fine for me. Your mileage may vary.

Hmm, mine only takes up around 4MB. Not that I'd care if it took up 7-8MB.

Google is Evil

I think Google is evil. Especially after they applied for a patent earlier this month for technology that would enable them to deliver targeted ads on someones computer just like spyware and adware does.

And now this software makes you wonder if with every notification you get, you will also get a little text link.

They're not evil. They're just like any other company. But maybe now, people will stop thinking that Google is somehow "less evil" than any other company.

Hey that's a great idea, now they can sue all the spy/ad-ware makers out of bis:D

Goooooogle

No wonder I have noticed lately on some LOG IN attempts that Google has made it possible not only to log in, but have a WORD VERIFIER before completely logging in on some attempts.

BAD BAD MOVE. Google is still my friend.

Google's wont work

Google's notifier doesn't want to work for me, so they better not hurt the Firefox extension notifer. It's perfect, it's small, and even tells me how much i have down there in my favorite spot of the browser.

hmm maybe the government is the real creator of Google after all of this. They just want to be big brother monitor us in every possible way. Google could also used as a good tools to crack down pirated sites and stuffs. Damn evil!

Well...

It is their servers and stuff and if they felt the 3rd party apps was adding a load on them or w/e, they could do whatever. Hell, its still in beta, let them do their thing.

Google very useful..

Yah and google makes it easier for crooks on the internet to search phone numbers (if the number is in the phone book) and shows the address on mapquest. Im pretty sure other search engines do this too but Great tool!

Google's official notifier works great for me, don't need third party ones. I get a little pop-up window in the corner of my screen with new mail and a little bit of the message and it plays the "new mail" sound I have set up on my computer. Impossible to miss when I get new Gmail, don't know how a third party one could be any better.

Rules

Google should just post some rules for apps connecting to gmail if it's causing a DDoS problem.

Say 5 minute minium between check for new mail or your app gets banned.

Google is great and the total opposite of M$. Google continually under promise and over deliver. Of coarse you are painfully aware that M$ over promises and under delvers in every facet of their business.

what happened to the google we all knew and loved?

they should have just stuck to being a search engine. besides, why do you need 1 gig of email space when you can easily get yourself a paid host with a few gigs of space for a couple bucks a month, your own domain for $5-10 a year and simply set yourself up with your own custom email address.

personally, ive been with hotmail's free mail for a while now and have never been disappointed.

Google Can do whatever they want.

Google is just a business, trying to be successful. When they offer a service such as they are doing, I believe that they are well within their rights to change how that service works at any time. Remember, they didn't offer you a warranty or promise as to what they'll do for you. If they want to block 3rd party progs from checking mail for you, that's their business. If they want to turn their email service off for a month.... They can do so if they please. And tough luck for the rest of those folks who depend on them so much. Remember guys, they're not EVIL for trying to make money and show you some simple ads. Don't expect everything for free.
