Bets the house, kids on VoIP
(old news - 04:09PM Monday Aug 30 2004)
tags: business
AT&T missed the internet boat early, then stumbled through a series of broadband missteps - like AT&T Broadband and their failed $135 million Northpoint experiment. Now the company is scaling back their consumer telephone service, and putting all of their eggs in the VoIP basket, a move AT&T chief David Dorman waxes poetic over in this ZDNet Interview. ZDNet hints that the one time giant known as Ma Bell is now the "HBO" of the telecom world.

No...

Simply put - NO! They might as well be like Furbys - adorable, fluffy, and white, but ever so annoying.

Edit: Furbies or Furbys?

WHAT A MISTAKE. People are sick and tired of the same old telco that is why Vonage Packet 8 etc are eating the Telco lunch. If you selling the same service as Vonage you better beat them on price or your out of the game.

they are not eating up the telcos, hell i dont even know 1 person with voip, and when people do start going to voip it will probably be from a telco name they know and trust. voip is still too new for most people to consider switching and some people will not want to switch at all.

Right on. I will never use an AT&T service after they provided crappy, expensive basic cable to me for over a decade. I finally got Directv a few years back and have never been happier.

ATT is still offering their Residential telephone services. They called me yesturday to sign up. Which they said before they were pulling out of 7 states roughly 2 months ago and still havent done it.

Don't believe anything with ATT until it happens. And for VoIP they better start expanding their network faster because they are already behind and drop their prices unless they're gonna keep bundling it with Insight Cable in Ohio.

AT&T is doomed unless the can do one of the following.

Raise the dead

Offer service commiserate with price, or price commiserate with service.

Run a fiber optic pipe into my home.

Since all 3 have an equal chance of never happening..

AT&T is the last of the lumbering American corporations of the 20th century. All others have either evolved or perished. The only think that keeps AT&T hanging on is the fact that it takes longer for a larger body to grow cold.

You Betcha

As long as "T" can keep raping the Aussies for bandwidth there will be AT&T.

Ask any Australian. They pay for their bandwidth usage.

I'm confused...... How do your comments reflect the topic of this thread which is AT&T offering VOIP and betting the future of the Company on it as a profitable source of income for years to come?

Please clarify what Australia & "T" have to do with this.

Re: You Betcha

ATT&T and a private firm ownz all the bandwidth coming off the continent and charge out the wazoo for it.
Aussies don't like to talk about it much.

Both these firms rape Australia, not their ISPs.

Will AT&T Survive?

I would not recommend AT&T dialup or broadband internet access to anyone because they force users to use outdated networks which are prone to latency, high packet loss and complete loss of internet conductivity for no reason. AT&T Tier two department are very aware of the problems but won't do anything regarding the issues that plague their networks.

Re: Will AT&T Survive?

It all makes sense to me now.

"networks which are prone to latency, high packet loss and complete loss of internet conductivity for no reason"

I have had a LOT of problems with AT&T dial up for a long time, and they always blame the phone company for their problems. Your comment makes a lot more sense.

VOIP? If my dial up is any indicator of how they do things, no thanks. My cable company was nice enough to run cable to my house, and I've never been happier. (InsightBB).

This is what they did to me,put the full blame on Verizon. I had Verizon come to my apartment three times, with them checking everything and then after all that they gave me a new wire pair to the central office. Still the problems continued after six months of dealing with excuses from AT&T. Then Verizon told me that it wasn't their fault that the problem where happening which forced me to terminate my business with AT&T.

What most people don't know is that AT&T owns the old PRSERV network which was once owned by IBM. AT&T passes this old networks off as V90 modem banks to make money but doesn't upgrade them for what ever reason. AT&T will lie and tell you that they don't own these networks and will then offer up excuses that some other third party company controls them.

I thought AT&T's Tier two technical support was decent but they couldn't do anything because of all corporate politics that go on at that company

No

They of course will not survive. As of now they aren't even the cheapest VoIP provider, and price matters. Since they are sliding downhill, most likely its not within their power to lower prices to match smaller companies without firing most of their work force. Plan and simple if ATT wants to survive they need to become small operation, but that of course officially means they are over as a big player in anything, and probably will never return again since their name is synonymous with bad service and support.

AT&T spun AT&T Wireless off as a seperate company in July 2001. AT&T has not run the ATTWS since then.

Re: No

Greetings,

If the service is anything like their wireless cell phone, it won't last long. I have yet to get a correct monthly bill. I'm always getting over charged and then they say they have to switch my plan in order to get it fix. bah. I'll never sign a two year cell phone agreement again and I'll never use AT&T.

The only thing that associated them together was the fact that ATTWS was able to keep the AT&T brand name. And ATTWS was only given the rights to the brand name for 5 years. In 2006, ATTWS would have had to change their name anyway.

I use to work for ATTWS.

It was one of their biggest cash cows, and I'll tell ya...I was much happier under ATTBi than I am with Comcrap.

Unless the point is the sale of ATTBi was the misstep.

History will likely view AT&T's purchase of TCI and MediaOne as a misstep.

I don't think they know what they want to do, but their CallVantage service is rock solid. $27 a month average for the first year so its not the cheapest but its also not the most expensive.

...whether or not DISH Network or DirecTV require a landline for certain services? Presumably, if you have VoIP, you only really need a DSL provider and not actual local-loop dial tone.

I wonder what satellite services this would mess up? This question is the only thing that keeps me from switching.

Enjoy,

Re: Did anyone ever think of...?

I for one have VOIP. I have it with Packet8. Will I ever go back to a telco like sbc, att etc. NO. I have been quite happy with my VOIP from Packet 8. I have had no problems with the service. $ 20 for local and all long distance even Canada for a month that $ 20 does include the long distance. There are no per minute charges anymore. This is unlimited long distance. Why would I ever go back to the telco's high prices when I get this service at this price. I wouldn't and never will. As the thread started out as asking about the ATT voip. I think they are going to have to really drop there price to be competitive. Right now ATT has dropped there price to I believe $ 34.95 per month.
