Can you say crowded market? Some users in our VoIP forum have been invited into an upcoming AOL VoIP beta. AOL has signed up Level3 as a partner, been hiring for the division, and is expected to launch the product sometime in 2005. Once again the company will wind up competing with itself; Time Warner Cable's Digital Phone service is expected to go live over the next six months.

.

Kinda confused me, I thought reps from AOL came into the VoIP forum and sent out invitations, but it's actually people signing up for the beta themselves.

Why?

ATDN sucks, that's why.

If they can't even trust it to keep their mail service reliable, why do you think they'd use it for their own VoIP network?

ATDN is a very well run network. It's also one of the most sought after peers for any largeish network. It has very good transit, and extremely reliable. Knock the AOL service all you want, but don't trip on ATDN.

ATDN is their data backbone...

Level3 is going to provide the VoIP endpoints... They already provide VoIP termination to other providers like Packet8.

Never...

I've been a beta tester for AOL for years and I didn't even hear about this until I went here. There isn't a word on the official beta page. Going to "VoIP Beta" just brings you to a page that says it's invite only but it has a "Consider Me" button.

It's by invite only, I got one about 3 weeks ago and am waiting for my ATA box.

backbone vs backend

ATDN is just "their" backbone.

L3 has all the voice termination equipment. they are how AOL VOIP will get into the PTSN. since L3 is effectively a phone company, it's akin to them getting in bed with any of the other big telco guys. they need the old school telco equip at some point it's just a matter of who to get it from. L3 already has a pretty large product base biult around this, AOL will just be another really big customer.

Here we go!

AOL=Internet for dummies, now are we going to have VOIP for dummies? Are they going to overload their server with something when they offer VOIP that will cause people to lose their service just like they chuck their Internet with content and dial-up users get booted because in reality the server is probably too crowded. At least that's the theory I came to when AOL said I have the best access numbers and I even had a new modem put in and a top-notch computer at the time and I still got disconnected.

I love you DSL, I love you landline!

AOL is overpriced, but how is it internet for dummies? Its just the net, you can be clueless about the net on AOL, and you can be very knowledgeable. It doesnt matter if it was Aol of the pass, or the even better AOL of today. The reason i said shut up, is because your going on about aol for dummies so aol voip must be for dummies. Its probably going to be like any other voip(either good or bad). And the simpler, the better when it come to things like this.

Also, who said aol is my isp?

Does AOL make basic web use more simple? Yes, a little bit but it isnt a big leap in easy use as say someone who have a cable connection and just open up internet explorer. Same thing, and its even faster(just click on a icon).

Actually all you need is basic dial up and you can dial-in then just open internet explorer and surf like that, let's not forget the windows dial-up networking, but again, an AOL user wouldn't know that because it's right there in front of ya...

Actually, you go to network connection and create a new connection(wizard). I said cable because its even easier, you dont have to dial into anywhere(fitting my whole point of ease) fool. As soon as your pc power up and your logged in your ready to use the net, but not with a setup dialup connection.

AOL vs. Time Warner?

Who thought up this AOL/Time Warner Merger anyways? Seriously, the one who did should be shot.

There is more fighting internal to the company than I have ever seen in my 22 years of living on this Earth.

Time Warner has VoIP, therefore, AOL much have VoIP. Talk about fighting amongst themselves. Oh wait, I know, they do this to create virtual competition. That way, they can't be accused on being a monopoly. Ehhhh....Something is wrong here!

I guess MTV and VH1 'monopoly' are 'fighting' even though they're both owned by Viacom? It couldn't just be taking advantage of the different brands? No... that couldn't be it.

Theo25

@attbi.com
Time and people magazine had reports out this past year saying their magazine subscriptions have almost doubled due to AOL's advertising of it. Apparently the merger isn't all that bad.

Its always funny when those who don't follow the stock market try to act like they know all about it.
Not that I would buy their stock today, but TW is a gigantic company with huge cash flow, and AOL has been on serious run this past year, especially in their advertising revenue and broadband subscriber increases. Most just don't realize this

AOL vs TimeWarner

If you are spending over $40 a month on cable/dsl then really what is $10 more for AOL.You get more services than any other isp and the voip works great.By the way AOL has more subscriber's than all isp's high speed or dialup combined so I don't understand how they are losing money. Also AOL's stock dropped from $70.00 a share to $21 so do some research dummies.
