U.S. playing catch-up with Asian broadband
(old news - 09:49AM Monday Aug 30 2004)
tags: bandwidth · world
Business Week is the latest outlet infused with Asian broadband envy, dubbing America a "broadband backwater" compared to the 100Mbps connections now emerging in Japan. While the United States focuses on the number of customers served, both speed and overall adoption are suffering, the article claims. It cites recent data indicating the US had dropped from third to tenth place in broadband penetration. "Competition is the No. 1 [reason] why one country grows faster than another," opines one analyst.

That is an insane comment...

Call in the "Butterfly Brigade..."

Bring extra "I Love Me" jackets.

There is nothing that the U.S. needs from Japan, except...

CHEAP IMPORTS!

"They're coming to take me away, hee hee, ho ho, ha ha! To the funny farm where life is beautiful all the time..."

We (the U.S.) forfeited that possibility when we accepted their surrender just before the end of WW2...

It has more to do with market demand then it does with technology. The Japanese market demands to have the latest and greatest technological things, and their economy is pushed forward by that fact. Americans on the other hand arent as hyped up about having the latest and greatest, at least not like the Japanese anyway.

Besides, why should American Companies RUSH to catch up with Asian Broadband Connections? They dont have as much incentive to upgrade as Japanese companies do. They can sit back and relax since they still are bringing in the profits.

Yeah, monopolies and lack of competition are like that. The end-result of the non-competitive market spectrum, will probably be much like soviet russia, and their level of technology in society. Do we really want that here? At least market competition is still alive in Japan, unlike the lazy, incumbent, monopolized telcos of the US.

Dont make me laugh, you should live in the UK where you are lucky if you can get a 512k connection. I dont think that we will see 100mb it the UK for some time, I doubt we will ever see Fiber to home either

Re: Oh here we go

You missed out 'government that is unwilling to impose regulations on industry'.

I know it's against the holy scripture in the USA, but sometimes, moving forward takes pronouncements that 'you will implement standard X by date Y or you will lose access to the publically-owned spectrum'.

Re: slogan for U.S. broadband

I think this is an article with a political agenda masquerading as news. Do the socialists elite here at DSLR really think you should work a full month out of the year so the govt. can take your money and deploy 100 mbit connections to people on welfare? I would rather have the FREEDOM to spend the money I sacrifice for in a way that I choose, NOT have the government decide for us. The power and freedom to choose should be in the peoples hands, NOT the governments for better or worse. Just imagine the government PIG bending us over with the help of his socialist allies....and you thought the cable pig was bad. Die you commie scum!

You don't have the 'freedom'. You are at the mercy of large telecom companies who perceive no need to improve the infrastructure, since that would impact short-term profits.

You obvious lack of education and disregard of fact is glaringly apparent. In simpler language to compensate for your grade level understanding: you are completely full of it.

"large telecom companies who perceive no need to improve the infrastructure"

So, Mr. thinks he know what he is talking about, why the hell did they invest over $12 billion dollars in their infrastructure in 2003?? Do you even know the fundamental reasons why or do you want to expose yourself on an even lower level? Where the hell have you been getting your information? Canadian socialists? LoL, that's what I thought.

other observations

now that I have read the article:

"The country (U.S.) is alone among developed nations in not having a comprehensive broadband plan."

Slanderous and untrue! The U.S. plan is to give the telcos and cablecos whatever they want so they can continue to make tons of money off legacy copper and poor service while delivering speeds up to 1/100 of those available in other countries.

"Worse, current U.S. policies have the country moving backward."

Absurd! Why, operators are offering the astonishing speeds of 3Mbps (some even 5 or 6Mbps!!!!!) and technologies like BPL (fvk those hams). In 10 or 15 years, the U.S. will have caught the world leaders!

"Competition is the No. 1 [reason] why one country grows faster than another," says Sam Paltridge, the OECD's telecom analyst. On this score, the U.S. has blown it."

Another slanderous lie! Why there are telcos in each region and several cable companies competing for customers. Just because they don't compete in each other's areas (much) doesn't mean we have blown it!

Regulation

I do not follow the Japanese market but when I lived there in the early 80's telephony was a NTT monopoly and an expensive one at that. I am pretty sure that the US pushed Japan to deregulate their telephone service. Why has their reluctant embracing of competition worked better than ours?

By the way, this hold true even if in practice, the Japanese market remains a monopoly. US law is divided over if a company is monopolistic if it behaves LIKE it was under competition. Even if its behavior is to preclude entrance of true competitors.

Re: Regulation

Yes, it was very expensive because after the war they had absolutely nothing. NTT had no money and that's why they had to pay more than 700$ for a phone line. Right now it's not a monopoly anymore.

#1 Reason U.S. is behind ...

.. is that here, it is legal to give money to politicians while in office. Amazingly, politicians are not required to recuse themselves from debates and votes for items of relevance to one of their major contributors.

If the legislative branch had the same conflict-of-interest and ethics codes that the judicial branch did, things would be alot different.

As it is, the providers are experts at gaming the legal and regulatory system to earn as much as possible, while doing as little as possible. I guess this is good for their shareholders (the only ones they do, and should, care about, as a private company), but it makes for bad public policy.

If it were up me, I'd drop the universal service requirement for voice telephony (I wouldn't care if my ILEC stops providing me with it; I can get telephone from a number of other providers), and require it for broadband. If you provide BB service in an area, then you must provide it to any subscrber that asks for it. I think Texas has a law like that, a result of the fact that many of their rural residents are unusually wealthy and influential in the state legislature. Apparently, the politicians expect us to believe it can happen by 2007, just because they asked telcos nicely to do it.

Once it can be assumed that all internet users are broadband-equipped, new services will be developed since the "chicken and egg" syndrome will be broken: e.g., look how big the online gaming thing is in Korea; the kids who are champions are national celebrities.

And I don't buy the "Asia is more dense than we are argument". It doesn't explain why Canada is doing whole lot better than we are. It just seems that, in the past several decades, the federal gov't has gotten less citizen-oriented. It's a good thing all those consumer-protection laws got passed in the 1970's: the Fair Credit Reporting act, the credit card protection laws, the law that lets you go to an independent auto mechanic and not lose your new car warrenty, etc. I don't think any of those would pass today.

lol, u americans

I do find it greatly amusing when another country has something which is better/faster/bigger than yours.

You totally go off topic and start comparing everythng and anything. Japan has 100mbps, yippee, no need for you to start posting about cheap imports and the war and stuff to try and gain back some ground!

I'm not talking about all americans but some of you are incredibly sad. Aren't canada beating you in the broadband race :P Bet that really pisses you off!
