Will launch week long marketing blitz
(old news - 10:39AM Friday Aug 27 2004)
tags: business
The AOL marketing mothership is descending upon Seattle next week, according to this WebProNews article. In the hopes of luring customers to their broadband geared service, the company is spending a week sponsoring concerts, ferry rides, free coffee, meet and greets with the Seattle Seahawks, as as well as tours of a broadband enabled uber-home.

That "might" impress some dumb 10 year olds. What aohell does not seem to get, after all these years, is that what they provide is overpriced, sucks and mental cruelty if you try to cancel!

Is This a One Time Event?

Why Seattle?
Doesn't make a bit of sense unless they are out to piss the folks in Redmond off.
I would suspect Seattle is a pretty Internet savvy area and not particularly interested in Internet with training wheels.

Quite honestly most of the AOL subscribers I know do it for the email interface. They don't want to be bothered learning OE or the like.

As far as content regulation, any 5 year old knows how to click the little blue "e" and circumvent that.

Now what exactly is AOL thinking?

It may very well work

Years ago, a friend of mine in the newly deregulated natural gas public utility business, had to compete for newly empowered customers. Their procedure was not to be the cheapest, or provide the best service but to throw the best parties: BBQ's, pony rides, balloons.

They won in a landslide.

I thought AOHell declared broadband as unimportant. Why waste all that money buying this dog and pony show if broadband is so unimportant?

@attbi.com

Re: but wait a minute...

This is their report from August, far better then anyone here actually realizes. Subscribers is only part of their income, but check the broadband numbers at the bottom.

--------------
For the second quarter, AOL's revenue increased 2% while operating income jumped 31%. The gains were driven by ad revenue improvement of 23% year over year, which marked the first time this metric has grown since the third quarter of 2001.

Some already predict that the solid advertising momentum could help AOL exceed full-year financial targets. "Later this year, we believe that a successful integration of Advertising.com, as well as continued margin improvement and growth in online advertising, will drive upside to existing estimates," Rohan says.

In line with overall Internet industry trends, AOL's paid-search category brought in a particularly strong quarter with revenue rising from $41 million last year to $72 million.

As a result, Wall Street observers expect paid search to lead full-year growth categories. "We look for paid search to increase 57% in 2004 and ad sales at AOL, excluding search and (advertising backlog) to increase 37%," says Gordon Hodge of Thomas Weisel Partners.

The main concern for AOL remains the future of its dial-up business as the unit lost 668,000 users in that area in the second quarter to end it with 23.4 million total subscribers.

But some analysts are even starting to see positives in subscriber momentum. Investors "should focus on the number of billed subscribers more closely, which increased 85,000 in the quarter" when adjusting for 753,000 in lost trial-nonpaying subscribers, Greenfield says.

And "broadband net adds were a very impressive 630,000 in the quarter," Rohan adds.

Don't Like AOL, Don't Use It

If you do not like AOL, then just don't use it. I don't like seafood but I do not tell you not to eat seafood, I just don't eat it.

For some people AOL works and works well. They simply want email and some web browsing, maybe a few extras that AOL provides. For them this is worthwhile.

Knock AOL all that you want. The truth is that AOL has been successful and will probably continue to be successful.

look for AOL 10 years from now..... there won't be much left. the marketing plan of hearing AOL all day is old, people have more knowledge and get more information as fast the internet providers who provide faster speeds, AOL have not changed anything about their service and from the latest financial graph they a place of honor in history.

I was not talking about financial status, I was talking about number of people using AOL. You could make the argument that many companies that have had dismal financials (Chrysler ring a bell?) have made successful comebacks.

Que? Did you read something I didn't? In the interest of verisimilitude - - - the following is from Time Warner's financial reports:

Most recent quarter - - "America Online's Operating Income before Depreciation and Amortization climbed 13% in the Quarter [2Q2004] on a 2% increase in Revenues." Adjusted Operating Income before D&A was $497 million.

And Operating Income for 2003 - net of all Amortization and Depreciation - was $663 million (as in "cash profit in hand"). Not too shabby, huh?

This public service message brought to you in the interest of truth by another fine "527" special interest group, Tom Swift Books for Truth.

RDins

@attbi.com

You better re-read it. Compared to 99-2000 every company is recovering from the profit surge, but compared to the previous 2 years their advertising has rebounded big time, and thats not counting their billions in subscription revenue. They are very profitable and their broadband showed a nice increase last quarter.

RDins

@attbi.com
10 Years?? LOL. Thats a long time ! That means they would be in business 25 years, thats not too shabby.

The AOL marketing mothership

This is a good sign that AOL could be possibly getting into financial trouble and is desperately trying to increase their user base. It's just a matter of time before we see if AOL goes into some type of bankruptcy protection.

And you are what, a customer? If not then how do you know what AOL has to offer? Have you used AOL in the past? Or are you simply echoing what others say and cannot make an informed opinion of your own?

What do you want in an ISP? Simply a connection? Or do you want more content? Tried MSN? Not much different than AOL.

If you don't like AOL, don't use it. But do put your prejudices aside as a guideline for what others want. For many AOL fills their needs quite nicely.

Re: im pretty sure

I guess you enjoy spyware and other crap bundles with your software....AOL serves the people who are Either ignorant with technology or know they can get something better while thinking spyware is no Biggie, I would keep using it if i didn't see enough AOL crap in my life time.....Good featured programs can be found everywhere out there....better than AOL and MSN put together.

AOL is going down because people are migrating to other solutions while AOL keeps spending money on marketing scheems.....Unfotunetly, AOL is not on the road to recovery like other company's.

Thank AOL

As a native son of Seattle I look to to all the free stuff. I was on aol for a couple of years using all free hours. When I ran out of hours I would just quit and re-up with another disk of free hours, but pay for aol? That's nuts. There's a lot of competition in the Seattle area and most people are gonna go for the cheapest service that's still reliable. It's been my experience that downloading off of aol is like sucking cement thru a straw. But I am grateful to aol for all the free stuff. I will drink their coffee, eat their goodies,(no ferry rides thank you- I ride the stupid ferry all the time) maybe listen to the concerts and then go home and get on the web with a real isp. My brother has aol in the northend and he spends a lot of his time getting all the spyware and other crap off his machine. From what I can see their filters don't work worth squat. They will sign up some of the ignorant, but most folks in King County pay property taxes up the yingyang and the cost of living is pathetic, so most folks are gonna be looking at price and bandwidth per buck. Unless they are cheaper and more reliable they're not gonna go far. Maybe I'll take the ferry to the mainland to see whatsup, after all it's FREE COFFEE!!

Friends don't let friends do AOL

I think I'd rather have a root canal than go with AOL.

inseattleaswell

@xo.ne

I am here..So are they.

I am here. I had travel the gauntlet. No free cds. No DVD cases. But everyone had to get their free coffe and water. (Go figure, here in Seattle and their just giving Coffee away!)

Oddly, they are even paying for peoples ride out of town (and away from their marketing machine) on the local ferry system (think, bus on water). But those of us who use the ferry system daily as our form of comute already have our fares covered for the month. So no value there.

No. I don't need their product. I would be hard pressed to find a reason to use their product. Yes, I am internet savy. They don't seem to have any content (even anything exclusive that they might lock in) that I can justify paying them more money on top of my internet provider.

But, in the end there are plenty of people born every minute for this kind of business. Even in Seattle, where we don't all work for M$. There's ADOBE, Nintendo, DEC, etc. We have to work somewhere.
