Under fire for alleged DDoS attacks
(old news - 09:45AM Friday Aug 27 2004)
tags: business · security
Security Focus notes that the CEO of satellite retailer Orbit is on the run, facing a five count criminal indictment in Los Angeles for hiring people to DDoS his competitors. Jay Echouafni paid an "associate" to arrange the attacks on three on-line retailers, which resulted in estimated losses up to $2 million. Paul Ashley, administrator for IRC and web hosting company CIT/FOONet, allegedly was the middleman and received $1,000 for the deal.

Yay!

That's who I bought my DirecTV from!! I wonder if it also has anything to do with the E-Mail I got a few weeks ago saying they destroyed my DirecTV contract because they weren't getting paid by them, so I could leave them if I wanted to.

What a fool....

Ok, this is my thoughts on it... how can you get possibly achieve anything from DoS your competitors? How many directv competitors are there? I know if I pick up the phone book, there's a thousand freaking ad's for people who are willing to come out, groom the dog, and while the dog is on fluff cycle install directv and clean your house. Hell most of these people are self proclaimed computer techs that think they can do computer repair as well. But back to the point, how can you DoS all of the competition, there's just sooo much competition. I used to work for a Satellite TV Shop, I used to install DirecPC systems "powered by aohell", and I know about competition in that area. But well back on topic... what a freaking waste of time and money, and now your going to federal pound me in the ass prison. Good job there kiddo...

Re: What a fool....

What's even FUNNIER is they are calling DirecTV a Bully on their web site. LMAO!!!! Hurry, toss his ass in jail so we can laugh at him!

EDIT: Their "LiveRep" is shut down. Gee, I can't imagine why. I truly feel sorry for the people who still work there.

According to the linked story they cost the companies they DoS'd around 2 million dollars, weather that be in server costs or lost sales the story doesn't say. But thats alot of scratch when it comes down to wanting to hurt competitors. Or at least enough to get the Feds involved. Also mentioned is that the companies they DoS'd got dropped by their server hosts.

And what is up with the DirecTv bashing on their site? IF what they claim is true about directv harrasing money out of them and others then DirecTv outfits wouldn't be a dime a dozen. No one would touch Directv then. Sounds like they are just trying to screw their customers over. I don't have a clue how it works, but i was under the impression that DirecTv contracts are through DirecTv not through 3rd parties anymore. Plus if you are happy with your satellite service why in the hell would you trust them to break your contract in the first place ? Sounds like this whole company is just plain junk.

Orbit is taking no prisoners....

Or digging themselves deeper........

"SPECIAL NOTE TO ORBIT CUSTOMERS: If you are an Orbit customer with a one year contract, please be advised that Orbit has destroyed your contract and DIRECTV does not have a copy of it. If you disconnect your service and DIRECTV tries to charge you back, they need to have a copy of your contract.

They do not. Simply dispute the charge and ask them to show you a copy of your contract. If they can't you are entitled to your money back. For its part, Orbit, the company you bought the equipment from, hereby releases you from any and all obligations under our Contract."

DIRECTV is continuing to try to silence Orbit via frivolous law suits. Orbit refused to stop exercising its FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT.

LOL, I was almost a customer!

I'm pretty sure I tried to order a system from these guys last year. I got suspicious when they couldn't complete the deal after 2 or 3 business days. Gave me some runaround BS about DTV not approving me or whatever. Cancelled and went with a competitor who came through in 2 hours.

And so I say it's federal pound me in the a#% prison for the lot of you!

PS - I think there was retribution for my cancellation as well. To this day I still get an unusually high volume of phone spam from mysterious DBS vendors.

Voom

How nice of them to destroy their customer's contracts with Directv. That has to be one of the most unprofessional sites I have seen in awhile.

On another note, I had never heard of Voom satellite service. Definitely the best list of HD channels I have ever seen plus Plenty of regular programming.

The scary thing is the cost per month for the service is not listed on Voom's website.

Is this like one of those fine Italian restaurants, where the price isn't listed on the menu, and if you have to ask you cant afford it anyways?

Or are they a competitive with Directv?

Anyone have any experiences with Voom before?

Re: Voom

Never heard of "Voom."

From their website

"VOOM is a satellite television service, provided by Rainbow DBS, a subsidiary of Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC)."

But some say Voom is doomed.

The facts

This is the truth about orbit.

Approx 1 1/2 years ago, RapidSatellite.com came along and hit advertising so hard on the internet that it put the leaders such as Orbit, Expert, Mini Dish, NationwideSatellite and SatelliteStore in hard times. The competition was fierce, and Rapid deployed tacticts to slam the competition by making all other company's look bad. This is what caused the problem.

The sad thing is this; RapidSatellite hurt many company's financially however DIRECTV didn't give a shit about it, and allowed unfair practice. Due to this Orbit took a stand to put a stop to Rapids tactics...unfortunatlly, Orbit went after other company's as well, which blew up in their face.

I feel bad for Orbit, because the fact is Rapid hurt everyone, and is still hurting the competition...so if anyone is to blame, it is DIRECTV for not giving a shit about it's dealers.

DIRECTV is a straight up MLM company who will give retailers a licence to give away their directv systems for free. In turn the dealer who gives the system away for free is compensated by directv in the amount of $200.00+ in commissions... However, the dealer is responsible for 1 year, so if the customer deactivates, not only does the dealer get charged back, but the customer also gets charged back as well from Directv. This is double dipping.

DIRECTV is a fucking scam, however their service is probably the best when it comes to satellite...

The Good.... You will get excellent service from directv.
The Bad....You and the dealer are screwed if you don't maintain a 1 year contract.
The Ugley.... Anyone who gets a directv dealer licence to sell can do whatever they want so long as DIRECTV gets the activations....they don't protect the dealers.

However, good things do come to an end. Directv is at the point of saturation, meaning that they have so many paying customers, that at this point they really don't need the dealers anymore, so they are making it harder for the dealers to sell products legally...

So, you will see this bullshit... FREE DVD PLAYERS, FREE MONEY BACK "REBATES", FREE EVERYTHING... however DIRECTV is going to be the one laughing in the end, because when the dealers are gone, they have all the revenue.

I promoted one of the largest satellite company's online for 4 years, and when rapid came along they hurt us; however that is competition... There was no reason in the world to attack their business as Orbit did... The one with the most money wins, right? well rapid had the most to spend...

However, FUCK DIRECTV...they caused this problem. Good job to Orbit for trying to stand up for their rights.... Good job to Rapid for selling a shit load of systems... However, in the end rapid will be gone as well, because when DIRECTV is done with them, they will be gone as well.... Also there will be new dealers with bigger budgets that will come and go... Alway's happens.

You get what you pay for.... so choose wisely....

I recommend the following satellite dealers.

NationwideSatellite.com - No Bullshit
SatelliteStore.com - No Bullshit
ExpertSatellite.com - Some Bullshit giveaway's but a good comapny.
RapidSatellite.com - All bullshit, but so what it's free right?
VMC satellite - Dish Network dealer, so there is your alternative.

Orbit Sat???? Sorry, you are now gone, used to be good and honest, but you fucked up.
