| Re: Give them another year. What is really stupid, is that Verizon has rolled out their VoiceWing (VOIP) service, and they won't let you drop the POTS line and add VOIP as a replacement. Speaking to a VoiceWing rep he said, "Well, you can get cable and then sign up with VoiceWing. That way you don't have to have a POTS line". I said, "So what you are saying is that I should drop Verizon DSL (and the accompanying POTS line) for cable so I can get VoiceWing and not double-up phone service." This move absolutely makes no business sense at all - its retarded. | |

| Re: Give them another year. Yeah, I was afraid that Verizon would pull this type of stunt, They are basically saying If You are a VOL DSL Customer, You can't have VoIP or Cell Phone Service, If You drop Verizon Phone service, VOL will drop Your DSL Service and no 3rd party DSL Service will be allowed to service You at all most likely(As They won't be able to put a Dry Pair from the CO to Your Residence, But I would love to be proved wrong on this)..... Even though for Years You could get the phone company to do just that, But You had to pay for It and No I don't know what Verizon Charges for that, Nor do I know how to hook up DSL to It, Even though It should be quite easy in theory. | |

| Re: Give them another year. I think that perhaps that is exactly the reasoning. Perhaps there is some obscure part of the "line sharing" regulations, that would require Verizon to make available "dry pairs" to CLECs as well, and they might be able to offer both DSL service and VoIP service, and Verizon would lose even more business to smaller competitors that way.
Then again, they might just lose a good chunk of their customers to cable competitors anyways. Cable's bandwidth is more stable, and seems to be a better match for VoIP services, IMHO. (Disclaimer, I am an annoyed VOL DSL subscriber that is stuck at 768/128, even though I should qualify for more. Was also strongly hoping for the eventual availability of "naked DSL" in order to drop POTS service completely.)

Is your DSL deployed over Frame Relay or ATM? Much of the older Verizon DSL is deployed over Frame relay, and they are not allowing anybody to upgrade beyond 768/128 if they are on Frame. Here in Washington, the 2 most common modems are the Fujitsu (frame relay) and the Westel (atm). If you are able to switch, you might be able to get faster service. The downside is that you are using a clueless ISP, they might not know the difference. You might have better luck getting accurate information from an independent ISP.

I see that you have a disclaimer, but do you have any experience to indicate that Cable would be a better fit for VoIP than DSL? My experience would indicate the opposite is true.

| Re: Wouldn't be the first time they lied... In PA, it really has nothing to do with who's in office, but the arcane system of funding schools.
Most of the school budget comes from property taxes. Since the school board can raise taxes whenever the want, we get screwed. Last time I went to a school board meeting, I mentioned that, on my salary, I can no longer afford to live in the house I've been in for 26 years. Their response was "If you don't like it, move".
This is the problem when a bunch of jerks move into a formally rural area, and decide they're going to do things "their" way.
BTW, I AM moving. I used to like living in PA, but things have gotten ridiculous here. The property taxes and car insurance is enough to make ya move. Plus, all the doctors are splitting since they can't afford the malpractice insurance.
I'm probably going to move south somewhere. The Northeast has gotten out of control when it comes to cost of living.

Hey, why not! That strategy has worked for Microsoft for literally years on end. How many times have the different Windows' installers promised that the OS would be more stable, faster, easier to use, safer, etc.? And always, it is just more of the same.

| Typical This is typical of Verizon. They suckered me into purchasing a land line because they assured me DSL was available. Guess what? My DSL order has been cancelled 3 times already because they said I'm too far from the CO and they refuse to tell me when DSL will be available. Customer service rep got a serious attitude when I said that Verizon assured me that it was available. No cable here either | |

| WLNP From ISP communication sent on 8/2/2004:
On December 10, 2003, an ISP Communication was sent to announce a process to save DSL when a customer switches their telephone number from a Verizon wireline phone to a wireless phone. The process included notification to the ISP when a wireless number portability (WNP) order for a customer with DSL was submitted and rejected so the DSL could be saved. Effective August 6, 2004, Verizon will no longer offer this process. We will continue to support any customers that had been converted using this process. For customers whose orders are pending, we will follow up and attempt to complete the orders.

| I got naked DSL but not from Verizon I can confirm what others have said: when I called Verizon to try and take them up on the supposed naked DSL service, the line I received from the rep was, "Oh, that was something the press made up. We never said that." Also, the Verizon DSL reseller I had my DSL service through (great company: DCAnet in Phila. PA / Wilmington, DE) said that their Verizon rep. told them there was no naked DSL available.
That said, I said goodbye to my DCAnet / Verizon DSL and Verizon POTs line and signed up for Phonom (www.phonom.com a regional player in the VA/NJ/PA/DE region related to Cavalier Telephone www.cavetel.com). They provide naked DSL plus VoIP service at very nice rates ($65 for both, w/unlimited US LD and a static IP).

| No naked DSL I called Verizon today (4/19/05) to get naked on my DSL and they said that they had heard no word from the top saying that they can do this. I knew something was up with this post when there wasn't a link to a news article on Verizon's website. This news is total FUD as far as I can tell. Until an official press release article shows up on Verizon.net's website this is still a money conscious geeks pipe dream. | |

| does porting REALLY =naked DSL? I'm still trying to figure out if I can do what cwoody222 did. I have DSL and my local line through Verizon. I want to dump the local line and port it over to Verizon wireless. I've heard and read I can do this, but the only way I would do it is if I don't get billed for two phone numbers and DSL service. These numbers being the number that was ported over to wireless, and the "new" number associated with my DSL.
Can anyone confirm via their Verizon billing statement they are getting billed for wireless/DSL only and not wireless/DSL/POTS
