Backup your data, the web ends tomorrow...
(old news - 05:12PM Wednesday Aug 25 2004)
tags: security
Yevgeny Kaspersky, founder of Moscow based Kapersky labs, has caused quite a stir with his misquoted claims of an "electronic Jihad" scheduled for Thursday. While several news outlets picked up and ran with the story (see Google news), virus myth-busting site Vmyths is calling the claims "baseless hysteria". "We believe the men (Kapersky and company) studied messages left by narcissistic braggarts, not Islamic cyber-warriors," the site claims. "Vmyths has seen no objective evidence to suggest an Internet jihad will take place in the near future."

"Yevgeny Kaspersky pointed out that there was no real danger for Russian military facilities since "they are situated at a considerable distance from the Internet."

They probably dont have a direct line to the internet. Maybe they have a Intranet with no internet access.

I never really thought about it but...

why steal a nuclear weapon and go through the trouble to plant it in a highly populated area? Why not just hack the defense system of a nuclear-powered country and launch yourself an ICBM...

I'm sorry I did not make my sarcasm obvious enough.

Yes, it already has, and more times than just in War Games, it's pretty standard "evil super-villian" stuff.

I don't know what the Soviet system was like, but the US launch system had so many checks, balances, interlocks, and human decision points that it was questionable that they'd be able to launch even if a nuclear war *did* break out. The launch bunkers and missile silos are on their own internal communications network, and there is nothing even remotely resembling an internet connection to be seen.

Not 100% true

The Slashdot article here »it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=···10069099 clears things up a bit. Originally posted here »Re: Kaspersky Labs Warning for 26 August

"A handful of sites are stating that Eugene Kaspersky, founder of Kaspersky Labs, believes that tomorrow will bring a massive terrorist attack on the Internet. This is being quoted in a range of ways, ranging from factual reporting to citing the story as an example of cyber hysteria.

However, Kaspersky is not predicting the end of the Internet tomorrow - or even in the near future. The story stems from brief comments made yesterday at a press conference which was dedicated to cybercrime and the problems of spam.

At this press conference, Kaspersky commented that the possibility of terrorists using the Internet as a tool to attack certain countries as a reality. As an example, he cited the fact that a number of Arabic and Hebrew language websites contained an announcement of an 'electronic jihad' against Israel, to start on 26th August 2004.

In an interview today, Kaspersky stressed that such information was not necessarily trustworthy. 'We don't know who is behind these statements.' He went on to clarify: 'It's not the first time the term 'electronic jihad' has been used. We've seen this before, with the focus being on sending racist emails, and defacing and hacking Israeli web sites. But it is the first time I have seen sites encouraging the use of Internet attacks against one country as a form of terrorism."

This would be a good read as well.

Read before ranting - everyone has taken off with this. Like most news sites do. Everyone has tried to sensationalize this. Because that draws readers and funds.

Speaking of actually reading, the Vymyths article linked in the above story has a reply from Kapersky where he says he was misquoted...

Re: Data Threat Level Elevated to Orange....

If that comment was made towards me. Read the title and the structure of the article. It clear makes it seem as if the statement from the original Russian "news" website is in fact true. There are multiple sources - including the one you mentioned - who seem to be reporting this in a more logical fashion.

Some seriously racist comments seem to be making there way into post as well.

It's going to end?

They've been saying the same thing about the world for eons.

Maybe if the internet did go down, it would be a much better place, for a time. We'd all go out and get some sun.

Of course he isn't. This whole thing is a Russian conspiracy to deprive the Internet of porn. Then when it comes back the Russians take over the porn industry by swamping us with cheap pay per view sites and ugly porn stars! I tell ya, it's gonna happen!!!
