Counter-Strike Rides Again
Better looking version's beta launches
Valve Software continues their exploration of broadband content distribution, launching a beta version of the revamped smash hit Counter-Strike last night at 7PM PST. Valve brought on Bram Cohen, the creator of Bit Torrent, to help ease the bandwidth load after initial efforts to deliver content resulted in a massive logjam. This time, Valve "pre-loaded" much of the limited content before launch; and while the steam client performed fairly well, few beta participants found lag-free games. Broadband Reports is running two beta servers for users to play on.

I just can't wait

I'll be getting CS:S when HL2 gets released and I just know that there will be a huge delay when that happens. That being said, I've seen some screenshots of the game and it's just spectacular »gaming.broadbandreports. ··· &thold=0 , I'll be playing this all the time. I doubt that I'll even leave my room for a few weeks .

Man, I want CS:S, but I don't know where to get it...

I don't have any other Valve products.

When I can get in!

I'd be able to play the Beta if I could get rid of this memory read error me and alot other people are getting.

I know its a beta but I'd like to beta test the insides of the game after this odd error gets fixed.

If your using Win xp sp2 add the application to the exempt list of memory controlled apps in the performance tab. It solved a lot of issues for some doom 3 players.

I think Gabe said if they needed to, they could ramp the distribution bandwidth to 17Gbit total for HL2. Nothing quite beats on demand bandwidth.

Good.

I like it. Pretty much the exact same as old CS, with improved graphics and physics.

Re: Good.

That's actually EXACTLY what it is. CS:S is just CS moved to the HL2 engine. Eventually they will be making CS 2 though.

To be honest I don't understand all this excitement over this. I bought CS and thought it was a joke of a game. Compared to Raven Shield and even America's army I found it to be not even close to as good.

What keeps drawing people to this game ? I just really don't get it.

KISS=Keep it Simple, Stupid.

The game is still popular all these years because of its basicness, but it still requires time and effort to be as good as the better players. It turns out to be about 5% shooting accuracy and 95% strategy. If you don't learn to play smart, you die. I think most poeople like the simplicity and only find complexity fun on a first person game, but not multiplayer.

maybe because at any one time there are 50,000+ players worldwide still playing this game... Just because you don't like it or are tired of it doesn't mean everyone else should cease to play.

On another note, Day of Defeat Source is the one that will rock. Personally I love DoD much better than CS.

Its great !

Last night at 7PM PST the game turned on and the Steam network literally came to a halt with all the people downloading the new CS:S patch and trying to play it. After about 20 minutes of downloading a 60MB patch and 10 minutes of waiting for it to load, I opened up CS:Source and was looking for a server to play on. Every server was full within 30 seconds of it going up ! It was amazing to watch people on cable/DSL connections put up servers, and within seconds their server would crash due to the massive traffic comming to their lines. After about 20 minutes of waiting in lines for decent pinging servesr, I gave up and went to bed.

I woke up this morning ready to play some CS:S. I was hoping I wouldn't be disapointed in the gameplay. I opened up Steam and began to play. The mad rush had died away, all the servers werent full.

The graphics were great, sooo much better than the original CS or CS:CZ. I was able to maintain over 30 FPS in most situations (My setup is AMD XP2000+, 512MB PC3200, ATI 9600XT) and it was very playable.

After 3 hours of playing, I decided I should probaly eat breakfast

Great game, good job valve.

Re: Its great !

Like the article said, you should try to connect to BBR's CS servers, we have 3 now the new one is 64.81.79.40:27035. I live pretty close to SB and ping a decent 80 to BBR's servers in the east and 20 - 30 in the west coast servers.

CS

I agree with some of these posters. Counter-Strike is not the greatest game as it is. Of those 10,000+ servers that were there for 1.5/1.6 most didn't do enough against hacks, and a lot of them I found treated admins way more fair than just average players. If they don't like you, your out. If we could have Valve set up the servers that were basically all the same with better anti-cheat/hack running, I think it would be much better. Computer AI admins...I wish

Re: CS

There are thousands of servers, you can not classify your few experiences with the whole community. I have no problem finding servers that do not have over-admin problems. Valve has stepped up it's VAC (valve anti cheat) There are alot less cheaters then there were before. Now if you get caught cheating, you get banned from all secure servers for 1 year and , You can only play on servers that do not use VAC. VAC is turned on by default.

Re: CS

A few experiences?? I log on to a different server every single time for variety. Ive probably been on over 1000 servers on 1.6 already. Probably half of the different servers I play on per day need improvement. I mean between the cheating and admin/player problems it is just about on every server. Im not saying that the majority of servers arn't tolerable, but that it is hard to find a server even now in 1.6 that doesn't have some problems.

I like CS, but not the community

I bet this would be great to play, but on the other hand, I simply can't stand the stupidity, immaturity, and many cheaters of the CS community. The game itself never drove me away, the people did. Oh, and Steam. I can't stand that slow and buggy piece of crap.

Re: I like CS, but not the community

Couldn't agree with you more. I played CS for years, witnessing countless occasions of ridiculous cheating attempts. It's rather amusing at first, but after a month or two, it really starts to get under your skin. Trying to find NO AWP servers is equally as painful.

Just remember, ALL GAMES in life have cheaters.

duh

Most people don't have bleeding edge systems. CS will run on a 400 mhz.

Its not exactly rocket science figuring out why this game is so popular.

Re: duh

DOes anyone remember when Steam was introduced to the public back in june of last year?? The chaos, the madness, the confusion?!?! Anyone want to make a wager that the lucky recipients of CS:S fall victim to something similar to the Steam release frenzy??

BTW, cash, check, money order, credit card, check card, and travler's checks not accepted.... only IOU's for hand-me-downs of used betas
