On-line households now 51% high-speed
(old news - 01:12PM Wednesday Aug 18 2004)
tags: stats
For the first time ever, broadband connections are accounting for more than fifty percent of all on-line American households, according to Nielsen/NetRatings (See Nielsen pdf or BizJournals). That's a jump from thirty-eight percent in July of 2003, with young adults and kids making up a significant part of the push. "The norm of waiting for a page to load has gone by the wayside through increased broadband access. With high-speed access in the majority, we're likely to see the richer, more interactive content becoming the standard," proclaims a Neilsen analyst.

Great...

Now those of us with no alternatives to dial-up can expect longer load times and more games of solitaire.

What do you expect ?

What do you expect when major dialup companies are charging around $20 a month for dialup. People are starting to notice if they pay just a little more a month, they can get broadband.

I set up dialup for people who don't need or can't afford broadband. They pay $5/month using one of two very reliable unlimited ISPs. One even has web space and newsgroups. For $3-5 more, they can get an "accelerator". These really do help, especially on slow connections. See »www.freedomlist.com.

You can even get 10 hrs/month free, which is all some people need. Combine this with a $50 computer and you can improve the life of a poor person for practically nothing.

I use a $5 ISP and accelerator(free to me) at my country house where I only get 26.4 kbps. For most stuff, it ain't much worse than Earthlink cable. For IM-ing, e-mail, reading the newsgroups and sites like this, it makes practically no difference. You can even d/l plenty of songs or apps over night. It helps to have family or friends with broadband and a DVD burner, however

Most ISPs use v.92 modems now so you can get your incoming calls as long as you have call waiting. I have a pager.

Hmm, I only pay $10 for unlimited dial-up. But... I'd willing spend 10 times that for decent broadband.

You may want to look into "ISDN" or "IDSL". Either should be available in most areas. Search the ISDN forum for FAQ's:)

Re: What do you expect ?

IDSL isn't offered in my area either. ISDN is, however, in order to get ISDN, my line would need to be changed over to a "virtual line" coming from a different area, which would give me a different area code (from a 269-795-xxxx to a 616-954-xxxx.) That means long distance phone calls to my neighbor.

If you also noticed the report stated only 51% of broadband connections account for on-line American households.

Broadband still isn't available everywhere. I just finally got broadband back in May.... that is after 2 failed attempts with wireless, ughhh

By this time in 2006 I'm sure that percentage will jump to around 80%, it just takes time.

And to those of you still stuck on dialup, I know how you feel. Just keep pushing for broadband in your area. I pushed for 3 years, emails, letters, phone calls, etc.

no broadband here

Yay, I'm now a minority on the internet!

DSL = 25k ft from CO, load coils (no RT building planned)
Cable = no cable to my house
ISDN = too much money
Satellite = uber high latency + expensive
Wireless = non existant in my town

edit: Oh yea I forgot...I pay $20/month for dialup and $10/month for an addition phone line. I connect at 28.8kbps max.

Re: no broadband here

I think Towanda is a old coal mining town.

If you are paying $20/month for dialup at 28.8kbps you are getting ripped off beyond belief. I live in Nanticoke Pa (The arm pit of Pennsylvania) which I think is north of Towanda. I can get both cable broadband and DSL through Verizon. Nanticoke is the same as Towanda, an old coal mining town with lots of elderly.

It's not a coal town...I guess it was used for the trees as lumber.

Verizon doesn't service in my area (it's Commonwealth telephone)...which is very strange considering Verizon has bastardized 99% of Pennsylvania.

I'm paying for 56k service, but thanks to the absolute TRASH quality of the phone lines, I connect at 28.8kbps.

Towanda pretty much is a ghost town, by the way...about 5,000 people live in it.

Towanda is located about 40 mins from the NY border (Towanda is in Bradford county).

Edit: I live outside the "town" of Towanda (if you can call it that)...so it's very rural.

Adelphia has started upgrading the cable infrastructure to provide cable internet, but they refuse to run cable to me, since it won't be profitable (on the way to my house is a 2 mile long stretch of road with absolutely no houses along the way).

It seems that I'm screwed until I move out.

I was born in Connecticut and when I moved to Nanti-croke Pennsyvania I went back in time about ten to fifteen years. Just a town of the working poor, the run of the mill trailer park trash and the majority of the population is elderly.

Some people in the Nanti-croke can get Commonwealth and some people can't It all depends on where Commonwealth Telephone has it's lines. Verizon service is poor with a lot of noise on the line. I complained to Verizon about this issue which they did little to solve the problem . But when I was late on a bill, you know they shut off the service mighty quick. Verizon is run by greedy corporate shirt and ties who only care about the bottom line. Verizon has a huge Monopoly in Luzerne County.

Re: no broadband here

Two options just came available in my area about a month ago, 1mb/1mb WISP and Comcast. I was kind of surprised to see Comcast deploy in this area since the population is about 2000 at best. I suspect they had to pass the area to deploy in the larger areas around us so they decided to go ahead and make it available.
I hope it becomes more available to those who don't have it, and quickly. I totally know what it's like to have dailup.

More popular, more expensive

The shame is the companies act like we can't live without it now as my cable company just announced they were increasing the price from $39.99 a month for 3.0/256 to $52.99. Netzero high speed is looking good to me.

Well, as another person who can only get Satellite for Broadband( or so-called broadband), I would pay %52.99 for 3.0/256 cable. Hell, I pay $55 now for Direcway.

Average download speed = 900Kbps----decent
Average upload speed = 20Kbps----sucks!
Average ping times = 1500ms----sucks!

Nearest cable line is 2 miles out. TW owns it and refuses to run it out my way, although there are 25 house between there and my house. That's pretty damn greedy!

45,000 ft from CO, but there is a RT 2 miles out from my house(right where the cable line ends!!!! Ironic!) CenturyTel has me on the DSL priority waiting list, but who knows when they will decide to upgraded that RT with a DSLAM?

IDSL = not paying $100 for less download speed that I have now.

Wireless = doesn't exist here.

So, add me to the "screwed" list.

$58 for 3k/256 over here which I was just recently able to change to $60 for 4k/512 (adelphia) - though the downspeed remains closer to the old 3k.

It's way more than I could justify to any rational person but my therapist says I'm *too* rational and need to loosen up, so I am practicing frivolous irrationality & my health insurance now pays my ISP bill.

BTW, if you do go back to dial-up avoid netzero at all costs! There are better providers out there for less money and NZ is evil. I loath their very existence. Do it for me.

One other thing's gotta happen..

We run a popular TV related site, and while we'd love to offer lots of rich broadband content, we can't do so cost effectively. I think bandwidth has to get cheaper and more plentiful before we'll really start to see broadband taken to its full potential on the web.

Do not believe it

@ok.us

Re: On-line households now 51% high-speed

Do not believe it, just ask the largest web sites in the world what the connections there users are connecting with and they will tell you the real truth some more like 60% are on dial-up, microsoft.com site is still well over 50% dial-up. Shows you how misleading a surveys are and not to always believe what they say.

Re: On-line households now 51% high-speed

It says American, not Worldwide. add me to the screwed list also:

DSL: HAHAHAHAH 65,080 ft. away from CO (That's 12 Miles)
Cable: Closest line is about 6 Miles away
ISDN: I'm not paying that much for an old technoligy
Wireless: Looking into, but it's $40.00 a month for 256KB/128KB
Satellite: I'm a gamer, so HELL NO.
BPL: Trial was executer in Cape Girardeau about 8 months ago, commerical deployment on hold due to Interference Issues.

Even though this area is suburban, there is no Cable out here. So Screw Charter and Screw SBC. Wireless provider is Brick Network, and I'll probably get them just out of despiration. Hopefully I'll have a good ping time. Wish me luck!

I consider myself lucky. I have all the bells and whistles. Rest assured this technology evolves very quickly. Profit drives the machine and they want your money too. A litttle patience and you will be complaining when they are in your pocket, and they will be.

Wireless should have good latency. While it's only 256kbit/128kbit it will be fine for surfing web sites, and other basic net things. You should be able to see a major improvement in gaming. Gaming (client-side) usually doesn't take up a lot of bandwidth. You might think a 3mbit connection will be better for gaming, but in reality if your not downloading files or using another computer while gaming 256/128 should be fine. $40 looks like a lot for that, but like you said it's the only option that is worthwhile.

Hang in there, you'll eventually get some sort of modern broadband bandwidth. If you can, I'd just move a few miles to where you can get quality bandwidth. I know this sounds crazy, but if your young or something and can afford it, it's worth looking for broadband when trying to find a place to rent or buy.

Download speed is practically irelavent for gaming

It's the upload(which can majorly effect ping) that really matters. As long as you have a decent d/l, an increase wont really improve gaming(like 1.5 to 3mbps). However, a little increase in upload goes a long way. I had 128, but now I got a free upgrade to 384, and my average pings went from 30-40 to 10-13ms. Gaming has improved greatly for me.

It doesn't take a lot of bandwidth to receive the info in games, but your comp can easily choke when trying to send out packets during intsense gaming if you dont have a good upload.

BTW, I live in Jamison PA(its in Bucks County, near Doylestown and all that good stuff), and I have 1.5/384 through Verizon for 29.95 a month(plus a 2 dollar supplier fee thing). Usually I can exceed my rated d/l by a good 100kbps if I find a nice server .

I could get 3/256 cable from comcast but it costs a hell of a lot more, and I want to keep my upload speed, since I dont really take advantage of my d/l too much.

I cant wait till verizon rolls out its new tier which is supposed to be like 3/512 or maybe even better. Hopefully it wont cost an arm and a leg .
