Spammers pound the web with MLM scheme
(old news - 01:25PM Tuesday Aug 17 2004)
tags: spam · scam
You have to hand it to the spammers pushing the Juice MLM scheme we first discussed last week; at least they're creative in a reckless, no regard for ethics sort of way. With the company promising to pay affiliates to spam the vaporware technology, the MLM campaign has exploded across the internet thanks to eager affiliates - some of whom go so far as to offer free bars of silver to lure customers.

As we've covered, the miracle Juice software (though we tried at length - and failed - to find a copy of the supposed beta) promises users that a simple download will provide them with speeds in excess of 2Mbps (with a 100% uptime guarantee) via ordinary phone lines - for free - for life.

Wait - it gets better.

The service FAQ says they'll pay users of their product: $914 for every 404 they encounter after installation, $182 for every spam that evades their filters, $914 if their connection doesn't see 100% uptime, and $365 for every instance of your child bumping into unwanted pornography or rabid sexual predators.

Wait - it gets better.

Affiliates suckered into spamming for the operation are being promised $50 for every user they sign up before the product's October 1 "launch" which is "limited to only 80 million slots," claims the website. Affiliates will also be paid $3 for every user their referrals sign up, the site proclaims.

The result has been a stampede of pseudo-entrepreneurs and spammers, hoping to get in on the massive October 1 payout, and doing everything in their power to get noticed. "What have I got to lose?" one affiliate informs us. "the risk to profit ratio is simply too good to pass up!"

Since our original report, Juice Boosted spam has simply exploded: we've heard radio ads, seen countless forum posts in countries all over the world, watched ebay get flooded with auctions, and have watched official sounding press releases flash over the news-wires. This Cox user goes so far as to promise he'll send users 100 ounces of silver if they can't get the "free 2Mbps broadband" the scheme offers.

With the insane of capital the company would need to pay up and the ridiculous technical claims alone, you'd assume people would steer clear. Apparently not; we've been watching users of the UK scam hunting website scam.com discuss the product viability for days, with many affiliates still defending the as yet non-existent product.

How about if they knew the company ripped off the site design of a legitimate dial-up compression company known as OnSpeed, who is currently considering legal action? Perhaps the lack of contact info, phony business address, no evidence of the "23 patents" the company claims it holds, or no evidence of incorporation would clue them in?

At best the operation is a joke; at worst it's an MLM scam designed to harvest e-mail addresses and financial information from users temporarily lobotomized by the promise of a quick buck. We've contacted the authorities in both the US and UK, and are eagerly awaiting the October 1 product launch.

Suckers: They are born every minute....

I can see this as a way to generate leads for:

1. People who are suckers
2. People who want to make money online
3. People who are tired of having a slow connection
4. ... theres plenty more.

From a business perspective I like it. There's lots of money to be made. Here's a few ways they can make a few bucks:

Making money by selling Leads: They can simply sell these leads to MLM lead companies and get around $10 each. The MLM companies will then use the leads in-house and profit first, then resell the leads about 10 times in various tiers, 1day, 7day, 15day, 30day 45.. you get the point and with full info or partial info. The quality of these leads are extremely good. Highly targeted, Dialup user targeted, Income opportunity targeted. People selling a product or service can make some good money off these prospects.

Making money by selling a service: Netzero has affiliate programs. Several DSL providers, like Earthlink, have affiliate programs. I use to pitch Direct TV DSL and make a hefty referral cut of $80 per subscription. Back then DTV offered at the time and it varies: 3 months for $29, no setup fee, no shipping fee, $49 thereafter, it was easy to giveaway.

Making money in MLM: Of course you can ask your new customer... "would you want to make money selling DSL?" (yes, no, who cares) If they what you've done, you can make money off your descendants. Not a bad compensation plan I must say but I would certainly only support MLMs with real products involved and is very competitive to existing services.

Making money of "Income Opportunity": Now this is really wrong! This is where we can go from a legit MLM to an illegal Pyramid Scheme. People paying people to make more money. No product, no service, just money involved. It's stupid, costly, and very unprofessional.

Now back to this news story... This method of advertising is very deceptive. Sure you will never get all the mentioned spam, error pages and all that stuff they will pay you for because it's vaporware!

It's got to be the most controversial method of viral advertising today. It only mentions that "it's free" so many times that they are simply pushing people to sign up just to get your costly information. Be ready to get LOTS of spam and even phone calls. (the DNC list doesn't work here as there is a 90 day waiver for leads) Their privacy policy,
»www.juiceboosted.com/privacy.php, states "Sometimes... we will give out your information to ...". It is questionable that your information is safe.

This is definitely a SCAM for harvesting information. Definitely steer away from it.

Re: Doing good?

This and the thread in the forum is being listed at google under "JuiceBoosted Scam" or "Juiceboost scam"

This is a Scam, Cause they want a place to "Deposit" your money. I.e. Paypal? Bank Account #'s

That's why it's a scam. At the least, it's a E-mail list scam, at the most it's bank account fraud!

Either way some idiot is gonna get ripped off and come here or somewhere else and start posting threads on how their identity got stolen, or someone drained their bank account - and we will all be Laughing out Loud at them, and just refer them back to news stories here and the scam forum

Edit: Now I'm waiting for the Trolls over there at juiceboost and see when they start posting anonymously saying "This is the greatest thing since broadband, and wanna bar of Silver?" :p:p:p:p:p

How is this any different than Verizon selling someone DSL that never works, leading to several months of billing while you work with their dysfunctional tech support who finally concedes it won't work and you are left to fight a six month battle to get your money back.

Not that this happened to me, but I have read the horror stories.

I'll call cox, as that user, and ask to reset the password and stuff for the webspace. (its all bangalore india, so they dont give a fuck about user security).

Then I'll get his address, and come up to him as ask for silver. hehe. He'd be line "wtf"... lol.

Or have cox term his webspace. hehe

Dot Com Business Plan

I just love this business plan. Reminds me of the worst of the dot-com failed business plans. (Ignore the fact that what Juice is offering is technically impossible and that it's likely just an elaborate e-mail harvesting scam for the second.)

They give away broadband to users (using patented technobabble technology ) for life and so have no apparent source of income. They pay users if they see a 404 error, get spam, etc. (So, I guess their software will make »www.google.com/this/url/wont/work.html a working URL?) They also pay affiliates for each user signed up.

This would lead to a large set of expenses (assuming, of course, that they really do pay up -- a big assumption to make) with no income to support it. So how would they stay in business? (And why does "Underwear Gnomes" spring to mind?)

Of course, this is all rhetorical since the whole thing's obviously a scam. No business can have that bad a business plan and be real.

if it's too good to be true

As the old saying says: "there's a sucker born in every minute", but I think with the globalization of internet this should now be changed to "every second". One would think having access to all the information available on the net would make people smarter, but I think that may not necessarily be the case.

BTW, I have a friend who not long ago invested $5000 into some southeast asian MLM scheme through an old friend of her -- had she call me before the "investment" I could tell her in no time that awaits her (does a 1000% ROI [return on investment] smells like a red flag?!?), but she called me only after she could no longer log in onto her account, hoping that I could help with that.

Somebody needs to contact Interpol

How much of this WHOIS information do you think is fake or being used to mislead people? Somebody in the London area needs to call the phone number.

With a statement like " takes 1 minute to install" this seems like a scam to get people to download some type of trojan horse to turn more computers into zombies. Has anyone ever thought of that possibility.

Scammers still haven't beaten BBR's Googlebomb

If you Google for the phrase "juice boosted" on Google,
the top two hits are still the Scambusters forum thread
and the first front page news item about the scam here
on BBR. And thanks to another site exposing the scam, the
first affiliate link in the main search (Juiceboosted owns
all three paid search hits on the first page) has been

At best the operation is a joke; at worst it's an MLM scam designed to harvest e-mail addresses and financial information from users temporarily lobotomized by the promise of a quick buck.

Isn't that what much of it boils down to? Greed overriding common sense? Then again... I'm thinking of petitioning to have the term "common sense" changed to comply with the truth-in-advertising laws. It certainly doesn't seem so common anymore.

After all, the 3 scams (go-l might be legit, but

Not April 1st but October Fool

Broadband is ADSL. Broadband is the marketing term used because it was realised that most people could not cope with asymmetric digital subscriber line. This scam just proves they were right. As Barnum said "There's one born every minute." I guess he underestimated the numbers.

There are other variations of broadband sdsl, vdsl ad infinitum but they are all variations on the technology.

A thought occurs. If this had been launched to go live on 1st April everyone would have smelled it immediately. Therefore move it 6 months and you have the world's biggest gotcha! Let's hope it is no more malicious than this. However it has still been a very successful human generated virus with all the emails it has created.

What do you need? A PC, webspace and some technical knowhow to create a site which most 10 year olds and up have these days.

Could be the biggest joke yet. At least you now know who your stupidist friends are and who to trust for advice.
