Promises new speeds 'later this fall'
(old news - 04:25PM Monday Aug 09 2004)
tags: dsl · bandwidth
Users in our SBC forum point out that the company will be giving customers one of the two things they most want; namely upstream speed increases. According to the SBC Press Release, DSL Express customers will see upstream increases to 384kbps; DSL Pro customers should see upstream increases up to 512kbps. "Later this fall" is the only time-line given for the upstream upgrades.

Awesome!

I've been waiting to hear more "official" news on this ever since one of the ASI/SBC techs mentioned it in a comment on another story.

Re: Awesome!

I think that in California, they don't have much choice.

Check out their competition - DSL extreme is offering that for the same price - SBC requires LD bundling to get their prices

I can get (and probably will get) their 6000/608 with 5 static IP's for $59.99

Re: Awesome!

Yea...good for us folk running servers.

SBC's most BASIC static IP package runs $55 a month for 300/128 & 5 static IPs...for an extra $5, DSL Extreme puts you on 6000/608 over SBC's own lines!

I'm guessing SBC doesn't want any static IP customers!

You must know that DSLextreme is a reseller SBC and Verizon? So, this is a hint ... If DSL extreme going to have that plan, SBC will also have a similar priced plan.

BUT, beware of SBC static IPs, they're sticky IP, not real static.

Why is it that in the US the speed offered by the ISPs is influenced by the telcos?

I assume that SBC will bring out something similar, but not quite as cheap. It's strange to see the reseller cheaper than the parent company, but then again, SBC is co-branded with Yahoo. DSL extreme also sells Verizon 7Mbps package, but its $$$

Wow that's AWESOME! If you're in California. Unfortunately 2/3rd's (roughly?) of SBC's customers aren't in Cali so that doesn't help us

They better get it right this time. RT users (Expert - 1.5/128) are still on 160kbps sync rate, while CO customers are on 256.

And they were suppose to give the upload increase by the end of the 2nd quarter.

Well it seems if you people on Expert rerate/resign they suddenly get the 256 upload. I have seen a few people here in IL get the 256 up without doing a thing and others still on the 128 upload.

Actually RT customers are required to make a change to their contract to be rerated to the 256k upload.. its been set for quite some time.. all you have to do is call and say you want to renew your year contract from todays date and tehy will put it through and you will get the higher speeds. All new RT based lines have been getting 256k for quite a while...

Yeah yeah yeah... In Connecticut we've learned that SBC announcing availabilty means we won't get it. We've been told of this since the beginning of the yr, and a lot of folks, esp on RT are STILL stuck @ 128up.

Sweet!

I started with 128kbit, then I upgraded to 384kbit. Now, I get 512kbit!

Now, how about they bring back the 6mbit package.

3000/512 still spunds good though!

BIG DEAL!

My Broadband cable company has been providing higher than that for over a year now!
It's easy for DSL customers to get overly excited about nothing, because they have done with so little for so long.

Yeah, but it's still cable. Try using that upload for a while and see if they send you a little "no-no gram."

@chcgil.ameritech

Since dsl users are paying about 15 less for their internet, isn't it going to suck for you when someone is paying 15 less and getting the same speeds? Even if dsl can't get 3mbit or more to most customers, they can make up for it with upload. 512k seems like they are going to do just that.

Right now I am stuck on 1500/256

I would buy more bandwidth, but I am on a CO and am stuck with what I can get. Don't get me wrong, the $27 a month price point is awesome and I love my DSL. I just wish I could get more bandwidth.

Maybe I will be able to get 384k upstream with the basic plan!

ARGGHHHH!

Oh dear Lord!

Now remember these dates all you eager SBC subscribers.

Sept 22, 2004 The Fall Equinox begins.
Dec. 22, 2004 The Winter Solstice.

Now I am sorry to be bumming out everyone who is enjoying Summer 2004, but this means the speed U/G can take place any time between 9/22 thru 12/21.

It's really stupid of me to think that this may avoid some of the "Hey I Got The New U/L Speed" posts in the SBC forum.
But here comes the BS the likes that has been flung in the Verizon Forum.

Have fun!

Already have it?

I think I already got this upgrade. I thought it was part of my 3mbit upgrade, but it seems not from this, as well as the phone call from ASI this morning saying they're "fixing" my upload speed. I was at 256 up (for the 1.5mbit plan), so I don't really know what's going on at this point.

Me too (I have two 6016/608 lines). The info I have is that you'll get it if your line supports it, otherwise it will rate-adapt down to maintain sync. Either way it's above 608.

Need Service to Upgrade....

Why is it that SBC is working on existing service when they are unable to supply DSL to those of us in SBC rural areas. I think SBC should consider working up adding customers to their DSL service before upgrading those that already have DSL.

SBC Promises new speeds 'later this fall'

WOW... not.

WOW! SBC gave us a WHOPPING 100kb/s increase on the UPLOAD side!

Could have done without. I think SBC is falling FAR behind in their network.

So far numerous wireless companies are announcing that service will be available (high-speed wireless; WI-MAX; etc.) by the end of this year to most of the US... Verizon as well as a few others are already building the first fiber-optic networks... and cable companies are planning networks speed upgrades to offer higher-speed internet in the not-so-distant future.

So far SBC has ANNOUNCED (aka using just WORDS and not ACTIONS) that they will start testing some high-speed video codec by Microsoft later this year with PLANS (once again only WORDS) to build a high-speed fiber-optic network. So far they haven't even chosen a company to buy the fiber-optic wires off of yet!

I think SBC needs a kick in the butt, don't you?
