I agree.. A quick ping test of the GLBX/Vonage routers indicates a very familiar fault. Vonage/GBLX connections are suffering from Routing loops.
Routing loops, where a packet goes bouncing back and forth between two routers until the TTL expires. When it gets into a loop, that same packet grabs 100x the bandwidth until the TTL expires. After that everything is normal for some period of time (30secs to a minute) until the senders TCP protocol times out and issues a retry.
If the routing loops get bad enough, then route flapping will also occur.

SIP uses both UDP and TCP.. ports 5060 & 5061 It can use either protocol. It will use TCP when UDP fails. see »www.vonage.com/corporate/press_n···_04_17_0
In a route looping scenario, after UDP attempts will fail, and the TCP fall back will also fail (in an identifiable pattern).
"Ping", generally uses an (ICMP) packet, which uses the IP layer of the TCP&UDP/IP protocol.

| Another GX Problem? I work with Global Crossing and they have no outages on their network at all when the Vonage problems are going on. If they did my cell phone would be ringing all day long with clients yelling cause their service went down.
But also Vonage reported that if they're customers start getting taxed they'll move their offices. Are more outages coming? Prolly so. Also they can't blame GX because of outages becuase if it was them their website wouldn't gone down if it was hosted at another DC because GX does not provide web hosting

| Re: DON'T rush to judgement yet!! Actually yes. I have an alarm system that has a log to tell if the line ever went down. Then got a seperate line for that because you shouldn't have both DSL and that on the same line. So now I also have DSL with a 2wire modem and I can tell in that log if it has ever gone out...because the modem has been on 24/7. So in all honesty, yes. -- Broadband allows me to run my own internet radio station, »www.thebomb102.tk, something I could've only dreamed of. | |

actually they say either is acceptable, however you will lose the QOS features if behind the router.

| Re: Funny... Well, if you don't have a cell phone backup, don't have neighbors and just have an overall bad feeling about VoIP, then I would not get a service like Vonage.
I, on the other hand, do not have those reservations, and I am quite happy with Vonage. It's kind of like the Windows vs. *nix debate, different tools are better for different people. -- Michael Badnarik for President. The Party of Principle. »www.lp.org

| STAYING with Vonage I am staying with Vonage. This is, after all a new technology. The reliability compared to the other VOIP provider I tried is stellar. Plus, regular telephone companies suck ass. I was paying 80 a month for 1 business line with long distance plan with Qwest. If you have a problem with the regular landline (which I did several times) the phone company techs eventually come out after 2 days and you are at their mercy. I can at least trouble shoot my MTA and Router. People that do this back and forth BS with canceling and going back to landlines are idiots. Just stay with this and you will be happy. I am a firm believer that this is a temporary problem with Vonage or GC and everything will be ironed out soon. This is not a basement operation. They are the big fish of VOIP and I don't think that they are going to drop the ball.
So far, I have lost money each time the service has gone out this month. That said when this is all fixed and Vonage has learned the lessons that need to be learned, I still have a telephone line that I can take with me anywhere in the world, free long distance and a nerdy sense of self confidence because I have new toys.

| if you check the GX website they have a network status page. They have no had any networks problems.
I'm a partner of GX and my clients never once called me to tell me they had an issue with GX going out.
This WAS a Vonage issue. First they don't pay their affiliates and now they're service is out 3 times in 1 summer.
Looks funny especially after just now they said they would be looking at moving their offices from the US if VoIP gets taxed.

Whats wrong with moving the company? In the real world the most cost effective operation wins. Offshore incorporation is not rare... Fruit of the Loom, Tyco and hundreds of other "American" companies have done it.
If you are a smart business man you aren't going to let any entity screw you...not the government of ANY country.
I wouldn't blame them and am planning on offshoring myself soon.

| Re: STAYING with Vonage Why wouldnt they be a factor?
They are doing it to avoid taxes and getting back at the government by making their users pay. The government will still get their taxes.
And why not blame Vonage? GX did not have an outage and customers were having problems while Vonage has more than one carrier partner. The problem had to be at Vonage not the provider.
And the day comes with the nice LECs buy up Vonage when they will with MCI LD & ATT LD when they're fully up for sale.
