Skin as a transmission medium
(old news - 02:09PM Thursday Aug 05 2004)
tags: alternatives
A German Startup has created an alternative to RFID and bluetooth that uses human skin as a transmission medium. A person carrying an identifier could transmit the information it contains through their skin to a reciever - allowing for technologies like keyless ignition systems. Microsoft was recently granted a patent for transmitting data via the human body. Other projects like ElectAura-Net have also explored the concept.

No - but if this is more then Sci-fi lore, and if I touch something with a computer connected to it (kinda like the movie GATTACA with DNA) that will be the end of privacy as we know it

I'd hate to have sync problems with that thing. I wonder what part of the body would be used for the flashing "loss of sync" lights.

i have to disagree. ten years from now, when we are shaking hands to transfer information, remember this discussion.

it would be so sweet to say something like "do you have that file?" and hear a person respond "yes, its in my ring finger."

it just kinda sucks that M$ got the US patent for it. bi11 is richer than he needs to be already

I'd be much more concerned with the latter.

Piercings?

And what about people with multiple body piercings? Will they re-radiate all of that as RF and be in defiance of FCC interference regulations? Will they have to wear wire mesh clothing?

Multiple-piercing guy touches scanner, cash register at Wal-Mart crashes. . .

Current on the skin

If you've ever stepped on one of those body fat measuring scales, you've had a small current running through your skin. Of course, this is a different idea than just measuring the resistance of your body to estimate body fat content, but the basic idea of the human body as a transmission medium for electric current is not a new one.

I thought it was all ones and zeros (10101101011......etc.)

Wait a sec, if you add up all the ones, it equals 666! SPOOKY!!

Microsoft bashers... LOL

You people are so amusing!

Man has no job

Man takes all his money and starts company

Man sells products that make company successful

Man takes profits from successful venture and invests it into other products

Let's think about this,

If he didn't start somewhere, he AND WE wouldn't be where we are at.

If he were selling crap he wouldn't have survived nor would he have had the money to create this new technology.

If you don't like Microsoft then stop sending them your money. If you and enough other people do not like him then he will go away.

Do the math people and then you will not look so silly for the needless bashing. Someday MS might really get some competition and even get beat in the marketplace.

What will we have then? The bashers starting in on the new king of the hill and buying MS's stuff since they are NOT the new king... they are whiners line of products, the underdog, the anti-otherguy.

Human nature is so predictable
