'We'll leave the broadband on for you...'
(old news - 09:21AM Thursday Aug 05 2004)
tags: coverage · bandwidth
This PC Magazine reporter notes that while many hotels promise broadband, they often offer limited capacity, which is gobbled up during heavy events. Of course at least many hotels have broadband in the first place; In-Stat/MDR noting that the idea is exploding in 2004 among luxury resorts and no-frill motels alike. A recent survey by hardware provider 2wire noted that one in four home broadband users will avoid a vacation destination if it does not have broadband connectivity.

Restful Sleep...

...is a lot easier to get if you have access to your email. not to mention illegal music downloads, pr0n, and Star Treck convention schedules.

its a wonder that there ever WAS a hotel industry before broadband.

Actully if the hotel isn't stupid, they will block a lot of ports. I stayed at a Marriot and they have a free t1 line for use. It was slow (to me, half the speed of my DSL) but it did run at 1.5mbps.

I did try a few p2p things, and they were blocked, no big deal, I mostly went to DSLR.

when I go on vacation

Its to a place that I will be out of the resort the whole time. Business Purposes I would like to see alot more hotels have better connections.

"Hey mom, I know you paid well over 1000 dollars for this trip, but I am going to just sit in the hotel and play on my laptop." NO THANKS

Slow online service

I went into this one hotel and they gave out free "high-speed" internet connection. When I did the speed test, the upload speed was nearly non-existent and the download speed was only and barely twice of 56K. (I think they divided the bandwidth per used room) It was so slow that when downloading full speed of 12 Kilobytes per second, I couldn't surf the net.
Heck, you really don't need to download during your vacation. Just check e-mail/forums and enjoy life without the wires.:)

I got broadband on a boat

I got broadband on a boat, why not get broadband in a hotel? Not such a bad idea. Normally, I think every hotel should have broadband in these ages. And why did Carnival get broadband before hotels?

It is a benefit I look for in a hotel!

I don't travel a lot, but when I do I want broadband access at the hotel I stay at. In addition to providing support for the company I work for, I like it for entertainment purposes. I wouldn't have to say my life revolves around the internet and email, but I have a lot of important things that are on the internet. It is important to me.

I like seeing more and more hotels supply broadband. Most of the hotels that provide this service also set it up pretty intelligently by blocking file sharing ports and leaving gaming ports open for instance. It really depends on the hotel though. I have encountered a hotel that ran the internet access through a linksys router with the default admin password in place. I told the hotel management about this before I left.

I travel quite a bit and believe me the "Broadband" at the Hyatts and Marriotts are all over the map. Courtyards seem to have the best and it's free. Hyatts and regular Marriotts are 9.95 for 24 hours and they aren't so "broad".
YMMV,

I stayed at the Hyatt in Downtown Chicago back in May and their Broadband service was free, not to mention fast.

I was also pleased with the broadband service at a Holiday Inn that I stayed at in Richardson, TX.

If I am traveling for business, I *always* pick a hotel with broadband. Considering my job requires attaching 3 - 6MB files to emails for status updates, there is no pain like waiting for a large attachment to upload or download.

I do not plan a vacation around a hotel with broadband access, if I have a choice between two hotels that are the same rate per night, I always go with the one that has broadband access.

Why? I maintain several WEB sites as a side business, and it never fails that something breaks when I am out of town. Fixing a WEB site on broadband takes up less of my vacation time than it would on dial-up.

There are no vacations for the self-employed. Their bosses are vicious taskmasters.

That and there are those of us who do consulting work on the side. Don't get me wrong, I do take 1-2 weeks a year out for just me and the wife. However, she understands my job just as I understand hers. She is a doctor of pharmacy and works for a local hospital. There are times she is called up or in to help. That is part of her job and I understand that.

Broadband adds to the vaccation. I look up local attractions and the like. And I rest easy that my business is not in the crapper.

Also I can log on to my home pc and know that at least if I was robbed I have that

It is not my website, it is the websites that I am under contract to operate.

When you have several companies and a few small government accounts that pay you $450/year each to operate and maintain their site, you have to make sure that when something goes wrong, that you can fix it ASAP.

As russotto said, there are no vacations for the self-employed.

From the PC Mag article: "Arriving at the luxurious Westin Century Plaza Hotel and Spa on L.A.'s west side..." and "There were other Ziff Davis editors at the hotel..." - now I know why a PC Magazine is way too expensive when you pick up a copy at a supermarket / magazine stand!

I travel a lot and most hotels tend to use either STSN or Wayport for guests broadband. From my experience, Wayport is far better. But regardless, I rarely "hurriedly checked in and raced up to my room to get online" as Lance Ulanoff (the PC Mag writer) did

Maybe there should be a review for the "quality" of broadband at hotels. I have encountered better broadband at some of the smaller independent hotels than I have at the bigger national chains.

Hilton Garden Inn.

All properties broadband enabled, it's complimentary, and it's a Hilton to boot!!

The one in Omaha, NE, is real nice, BTW.

I agree. I've been happy with Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, and Marriot Courtyard. Wyndham/Summerfield Suites is free too (with a free 'by request' membership) and also works well.

The larger, more luxurious hotels seem to have the worst connections, and charge the most for them. Then again, these hotels don't have free breakfasts or free exercise rooms either.

Perhaps all these hotels use the same backbone size - one T1 usually - whether they have 50 rooms or 1500. Fortunatley, (as in Dvorak's experience) there is rarely any trouble getting credit for bad connections.

A guy I know went to Europe on vacation (Sweden or Norway...I can't remember). Anyways he had a wireless T3 connection in the hotel.

I look for it..

I most certainly look for it. Earlier this year for work, I had to travel up and down the East coast, and it seems that 2004 is the year all hotels are getting broadband. You have no idea how many hotels I stayed at (nicer hotels, Hilton, Wyndham, Mariott, Holiday Inns (corp ones).) were JUST getting it installed as I stayed. I felt like I was riding the installation tidelwave. One of the LA Quintas I stayed at (which offer 768/768 btw) literally had the techs come install the jack the day I was leaving. So did a residence inn, a ramada had the broadband guys installing as we arrived.. etc etc. This seems to be a huge trend all of a sudden, and I for one am happy with it. When your working on the road, my first question is, "Do you have free high speed internet?" NO? Ok, thanks.

It beats having to find a kinkos or using dialup..

Broadband on Vacation?

I would not dream of bringing a computer on vacation, business may be one thing but vacation. Isn't a vacation to get away and relax? If I took a computer on vacation I would be sure to stay on the first floor so my fall would not far.

Bullllllllllll sh!tttt

Let me say this...I have checked into a few hotels that claim they have it. Well they only put high speed internet on their advertisements because it is "coming soon". When I went to Erie PA for the weekend. I checked in and out of 3 different hotels all 3 saying they have it but when I call the lobby, "oh it's coming soon".

Arescom at hotel - avoid it

I paid the Arescom service $9.95 for 24 hours of broadband when I was staying 1-night at an Amerisuites hotel. It was a work night, and I needed to check e-mail/upload some files for the next day.

Speeds were awful. Worse than DSL Lite from BellSouth. It was NOT worth the money spent on the access for the 24 hours. I should've stayed at a Courtyard.

A tip for that San Diego trip...

There is free (!) 802.11b access available in the Little Italy area. Details here:

The WAP is at the corner of India and Date streets. Caffe Italia is a coffeehouse in range. They have accessible outlets to plug your laptop in if you'd rather not run on battery power with 802.11 on.

If Color Graphics, a reprographic/print shop, is open when you are there, thank them for running the hotspot.

WAY better than paying $10/day for just OK DSL-like service.

Make sure you've got a software firewall running if you are running Windows, or do yourself a favor and boot your computer with a real OS for the duration of your connection:

Of course if you're on a Mac you don't have to worry all that much about stuff like that. ^_^

Don't leave home without it!

A few weeks ago we went on vacation to Santa Barbara (if you consider visiting a mother-in-law as a vacation!) and stayed at the Best Western Pepppertree inn that had wireless. There was no charge for the wireless. I counted about 10 APs and the speed was extremely good. This was the first time we stayed at a place with wireless, and now that I have been sucked in, I have a feeling that wireless will now become a requirement for us on any vacation (assuming there is a choice). I'm sold on it!

P.S. They also cleaned my windshield every night! Nice touch!
