Free TV
For the time being...
Users in our Hot Deals forum have pointed that Backspace Media is providing free streams of several cable channels as a lead-up to offering paid internet cable service. Not all of the channels work for the current beta, but the video quality (some streams are greater than 400kbps and take some time to load) isn't too bad. Their future pricing plans are available here.

Thanks for the, er, heads up. No free stuff, though.

Seriously, though, I can view the promotional video, but none of the content. Wonder if anyone else is having difficulty, or a multicast enabled ISP is REQUIRED?

this concept is not new....

but it's nice that it's available. I think if ISP's would implement IP multicast on their networks, streaming media would even be better of higher quality as without multicast I'm sure the network would bottleneck and cause the feed to down speed (or buffer) if a massive viewer ship started. My understanding is that multicast is one feed from server onto a multicast backbone (like Sprintlink, Level3, others) to end user in a multicast enabled ISP network. The main nodes have IGMP v2 enabled so that the network don't get flooded with the stream for users not wanting the feed so bandwidth is conserved on the server end and user end.
I know of content providers using multicast that I can't get now because the ISP is not multicast enabled to/from the internet backbone.

It may not be a new concept but...

hopefully they can successfully implemement it. It's time to bring real broadband content to user's homes. Sure they offer most of the big name networks but at least it's a start.

Re: lots of channels

Well I have never heard of some, But I think I have most of them, I don't have Tech Variety TV (Tech TV?), So I wouldn't really be interested as Dish Network would be better than getting It over Verizon DSL(ex-GTE Ilec).

Awesome! I wish they would add more channels and get a fatter (a really fatter) pipe ... I would personally subscribe to it in a heartbeat if it competed with dish and cable, and of course, the "cool" factor

Don't Work For Moi

It doesn't work for me - boo hoo. I get the web site, but when I click on any of the channels, IE tells me "error on page". and that's the end of it.

Doesn't Keep Up

I've got a fat pipe and a good computer, and it doesn't keep up. I suspect it's their pipe, not mine.

Proof of concept will be when it takes more than a handful of folks reading this news bite and connecting out of curiosity to overwhelm their system.

It's fun to watch the weather channel on my tuner and on their page (such as it is) at the same time. Backspace is a minute or two delayed.

too choppy

the video and audio are very choppy and somtimes take a few minutes to load even though I have a 3000k road runner connection. Also the brodcast is delayed because I was watching a&e on there and on my satellite and it was showing a completly diferent show. They also should add comedy central.

Re: too choppy

Based on VTV for Pismo Beach, CA being one of the channels, I'd say they're watching west coast feeds. The A&E you see there is probably three hours off what you're seeing.

I notice that they're about 50 seconds behind on The Weather Channel.

4.95 would be a good price if they kept the only real channels in there. Like A&E and the history channel. If someone comes out with a service that has A&E, History, Discovery, and TLC for 4.95 I would get it instantly and cancel my cable. Oh and MTV and VH1 would be kickass. Late at night when nothing else is on music is a good substitute. Although that of course is a wonderful pipe dream.

Pay or free

Hello. I was just wondering. I saw somebody post that said, when u click on a pay channel, just click the accept credit card charge and watch the movie. I can't seem to understand how they can charge you, when you never set up an account or registered a credit card with them. Does this mean that it is free till they are out of Beta?
