| Sales are going up because more people are getting into the new technology's (DVD players, Computers, consoles, cd players ect..) at a rate faster then previous buyers are turning into download only pirates. Most advocates say it's ok to pirate stuff as long as we don't make a profit off of it but have you ever heard the phrase "A penny saved is a penny earned"?
There's always pirate free for all advocates that will argue this but there is no denying (if you're a clear thinker) what negative impact piracy has had on the PC gaming scene. | |

I'm not sure how many people are like me, but I'm sure there are plenty. Before I downloaded stuff I quit buying games without demos because I was tired of getting ripped off by horrible games. | |

Comcastmust have over 300,000 HSI subscribers, add in the rest of the ISPs and we could reach that number in the USA alone. Now ad in Europe and the Asia Don't forget our friends in Japan that have 100MPs connections they could do a lot on their own. That number seems low to me.
Just because you use p2p doesn't make you a criminal. Lots of legitimate uses for p2p exist. Sure sharing Copyrighted material is wrong. I came to this conclusion and have stopped not because the RIAA will storm my house but because someday maybe I will copyright something and want to make a buck off it.
Older out of date material that Companies will not
rerelease I think should be fair game. How about an expiration like a patent say 10 years or 20? The the work can be used for none revenue purposes.

At 3megabits/s I can transfer 180megabits in a minute, 10800 megabits in an hour, or 259,200 megabits in a day, which is 13,200 megabytes, or approximately 12.9 Gigabytes. Unless I screwed up somewhere, wouldn't that be over 800,000 people?

The phrase "copyright-protected" is far too broad. Freeware, shareware and other works offered freely may still be copyright-protected. The tone of the comment is meant again to make this seem as if it is always and fully illegal regardless of the media being shared.
Total BS of course....but hey, what do you expect from a guy who's making a living selling filtering gear. No different than the FUD dealers who used to go around feaking out CEOs about Y2K, so they could sell more programming services.

| This info means diddly-squat... I understand that this guy has a vested interest in coming out with radically inflated figures. That's the only way he can try to scare some of these ISPs that really don't need his "filter" into buying it.
You have to admit that telling an ISP that they could potentially be liable for millions of dollars in a lawsuit due to their users' illegal activities has a really good sound to it, if you're in his shoes. The thing he seems to ignore is that an ISP can't be held liable for its users' illegal actions, so long as the ISP didn't know about them and had a policy against them. I don't know of a single ISP that doesn't state downloading copyrighted software is against their ToS, so they're probably covered fairly well in this sense. I'm not a lawyer, but this makes pretty good sense to me...
This needs to be coupled with something that many ISPs already know all too well-- a lot of the activity on P2P networks and other places has fueled their growth tremendously. A post above already touched on this very well. Not too many people would be shelling out top dollar for high speed connections just to surf around to message boards and post opinions, or to download the latest linux distro every couple of weeks. I'm not saying that software piracy is the only reason to have a high speed connection (it isn't), but let's face it: that's a big part of the reason for a large number of people. Like I said, ISPs know this as well; they have no desire to do things that will cause their broadband subscriber base to shrink and shrivel.
And finally, I really have to call into question the ability of any "filtering" device or software when it comes to stopping piracy. Sure, there are ways to temporarily block things and stop people. There are ways to slow down file sharing and trading. But there is nothing out there that can completely stop it. P2P applications are adaptive: the moment that a group of them is rendered useless by an anti-piracy technology, another group seemingly pops up from nowhere. And that's ignoring all of the other potential channels that can be used, from IM apps to IRC to good old fashioned email. No filtering device can possibly stop 100% of this traffic; it's an impossible feat.
IMHO, the creator of this filtering technology should turn his time and talent to something that everybody wants and would benefit from. How about creating a device (or software) that will prevent spammers from sending their obscenity-laiden junk mail? How about creating a device (or software) that can automatically block all Internet ads from appearing-- no matter what web site a person visits? These are things that I would think ISPs would want to see implemented. And these are things that I think would attract some users to those ISPs.
