FCC Chairman Starts Blog
Powell reaches out to the high-tech community
(old news - 04:29PM Saturday Jul 10 2004)
tags: fcc
FCC Chairman Michael Powell has started his own Web Blog, to reach out to the high-tech community and bypass the scores of Washington lobbyists who typically skulk around his office. In his blog, Powell hopes to encourage the high-tech industry to get involved because its past practice of flying under the radar to avoid regulations will no longer work. "Regulated interests have about an 80-year head start on the entrepreneurial tech community when it comes to informing regulators what they want and need, but if anyone can make up for that, Silicon Valley can," he said in his first blog comments posted Thursday morning. "I am looking forward to an open, transparent and meritocracy-based communication, attributes that bloggers are famous for," said Powell.

FCC joke in my town...

Someone needs to get this idiot out of his position before he ruins something else in this country.

It's too late the damage is already done. Still you're right he needs to be removed from that position. I still haven't fully come to the conclusion if he truly believes the myth of deregulation being a long term benefit to consumers and the economy. Or if he is merely a Government puppet of the corporate machine whether knowingly or not.

Whichever one is true he still needs to be removed. Limiting regulation is fine if done conservatively. This can help in preventing Over-regulation which can be nearly as bad as deregulation. Deregulation almost never works.

The deregulation of cable companies offering cable tv service is more than proof of this. The cable pig is fatter then ever and the only thing that is keeping him from going hole hog is competition via Satellites and the growing interest among communities in building fiber and wireless networks.

"Sir SIR! We don't use DHCP servers. We only use IBM & Microsoft servers." From there my call to tech support went steadily downhill.--

And there you have it.... out of the mouths of babes. The only thing which should keep them at bay is the competition. The competition IS keeping them at bay. Your problem is??? Oh, I see, you want something more like the telephone companies. You know where the gubmit taxes the hell out of them and they pass it on to us, but we blame them.... makes PERFECT sense to me.

It would have been easier for you to follow the link and find that yes, there are plenty of comments, than it took you to post here stating that you hadn't bothered to look.

What's the point of allowing open comments if he doesn't answer the questions being asked??

Good point, the answer is we don't know. I really doubt he will read every comment posted. You never know though, he could assign someone to read it and extract meaningful information or questions?

It will be interesting to read his next entry to see if it touches at all on any of the comments from his previous blog entry.

Re: Wow

I think you folks fail to realize that this chairman is the one who is fighting tooth and nail to get some of the UHF TV spectrum freed up, or atleast shared, so that we can deliver wireless broadband in the eastern woodlands where we have so much trouble with absorbtion.

This guy has done an excellent job. The HAMs took issue with him and his BPL idea because they RIGHTLY saw interference problems. He gave it a shot anyway and let a couple of test companies start up. The tests showed the HAMs were correct. He shut it down. Which one claims he could have done better?

I'm not a big fan of the FCC right now, but this looks promising to me. It has the potential of being something that a person can shoot over a quick comment or idea and perhaps have it heard.

Of course they could just be logging your ip address, noting any bad comments, then start an FBI file on you.

A break from Vegas Junkets?

So while he's not partying it up in Vegas or letting tax payers be swindled for billions »msnbc.msn.com/id/5234858/, or having his picture taken with Mickey Mouse, he's blogging? He's one of the biggest do nothings, ever.

Which part of this surprises you. It was set up by the last administration. You know the one that invented the internet.

Be glad he's using a free service, or he'd be spending YOUR tax dollars on a subscription to livejournal.

It's not worth your time and money to ship them out, it's only a $.06 profit! Let them construct their own tin foil hats, it's easy and fun!

I joined and posted about TWC wants $25,000 instal

I just joined alwayson-network.com
and posted my story (originally posted here at dslreports)
»[TWC] [TWC] wants wants to charge me $25,000 for RR
www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,9512648
about Time Warner Cable wants to charge me $25,000
to install cable TV.
The other cable company Cablevision is right around the corner.
Cablevision folks are so great over the phone. I truly believe at this point that
Cablevision would like to build cable in my area
and absorb the cost(no mention of any money, not $25,000)
but they cannot, because a franchise is required for
each town but who can go thru the expense of a franchise
with only 20-22 customers?
I am between 2 towns and 2 cable companies.

So I posted my broadband blackhole story to FCC Chairman
Powell's site. I really hope he reads it,
especially since my case is clearly
one where government regulation has gone very wrong.

Yeah, i think that is a little ridiculous...maybe charge yuo exactly what it costs to lay the line, and everything it entails, but 25000 is a little bit much
