A new, meatier Yahoo webmail cometh...
(old news - 12:05PM Saturday Jul 10 2004)
tags: software
The folks at the quietly popular webmail provider Oddpost this week announced that they had been acquired by Yahoo, and would be working with the company to provide a new, meatier webmail service. With GMAIL becoming a community darling even in Beta, Yahoo apparently felt they needed an upgrade, which Oddpost's integrated RSS reader, and well-liked interface should provide.

Well

Having an oddpost subscription, I must say that I'm not very happy to hear about this, but I'll withold judgement until the final integration occurs.

Is it better than Y! Mail?? Worse?? How does it differ??

I was forced to use webmail when I switched to a free DSL ISP (no bragging here, still need to pay for DSL connectivity) that does not provide POP email.

So I went shopping for webmail. Much to my surprise, all webmail providers, IMHO, are either worse than Y! mail or rip it off left and right. The POP access feature was just icing on the cake.

Never checked Outpost, so I wonder...

Re: Well

Oddpost is different from the rest. It uses a web application that works very much like a separate email client. A pretty neat trick really. I liked it a lot when I had a 30 day trial account, but not enough to pay to keep it. And it only works with Internet Explorer.

For those who have never tried it, oddpost has about the best UI of any email client I have ever used (web-based or stand alone application). Clean, powerful and elegant. It had a superb junk mail filter, a great drag-and-drop based interface model, and absolutely no garish branding or ads of any kind. Oddpost was so good, in fact, that I ditched my mail clients and let it handle all my email accounts.

I also have a Gmail account and can't fathom how a giant like Google, with armies of developers and millions of dollars can't even come close the quality features and user experience 2 guys working out of coffee shops were able to produce.

Its very disheartening how frequently marketing trumps quality. We'll miss you Oddpost.

Re: Well

I hope Yahoo will make it work on more than just IE. GMail works great, has cross-browser capability, has a lot of app-based feel (unlike most other webmail apps), and has SSL encryption for the entire session.

By sticking to just IE, Oddpost's developers can just use IE-specific extensions to provide their required functionality (I never used it, so cannot comment if it uses a .dll, ActiveX, or Java; though if they are using Java, why limit to just IE?).

Should..

This should be a good transition. Yahoo Mail might end up doing better then GMail in the interfacing field.
