Why shouldn't SBC hang on to DSL as long as possible? With current ADSL packages with SBC, you can get 6.0mbit down/608kbit up for $150 (not positive on the price).
IS there really a broad consumer demand for higher than 6Mbit in the next 18 months? Probably not. And of course everyone knows that fiber will replace copper eventually - just like autos replaced the horse drawn carriage.

The downstream and upstream access speed or sync rate is measured between network interface device at customer's location and the DSL-equipped Central Office or Remote Terminal. The actual speed achieved will depend on several factors, including line conditions and loop length.
There is also the small issue of megabytes versus megabits.  | |

What a bunch of crap, all of south korea is using fiber i believe and so is japan. Japanese can get 'usen'co. fiber for whats equivalent to $50 bucks and they get 100mbit. | |

| batavia While I can sympathise with all of the other burb replies of service in more populated areas like Chicago and Mount Prospect, I believe the only reason it is being promised to a city like Batavia is that it is working on some real competition for the customers. SBC is scared to death that this might actually work and give everyone a choice. I don't see an existing consumer need for those types of speed with current uses of DSL, but this project is intended to have TV, phone, and internet services as part of the package. I think you could gobble up a good portion of that bandwidth with all of those services running. Again, this decision is not based on how many paying customers they might get (which is the normal claim from SBC) but on the chance of the city voting this project into reality. | |

Cable companies will be able to advertise:
"We are 1000x faster than DSL. Full pages and video load in a split second." Ive tested file transfers over my LAN from one pc to the next. I can download files at 12mbps. I can use that kind of connectivity. hehe. and thats with 700 mhz server.
Every time I download at 300kbit per a tenth of a second Im definitely downloading at 3Mbps.
People we should be moving forward here. Even other countries are passing us by.
Perhaps they are more competitive (against US?)
An off-topic note:
Look at Los Angeles for instance, there merchandising industry is 10 years ahead of the rest of the country because of very strong competition and higher population. There's definitely more competition in that specific market with lower prices and higher profitiblity. | |

| Mailing address. What cracked me up was when the SBC people were scrambling around trying to provide the mailing address to the guy who asked why such address is so hard to dig out. 
This video made my day at work.
The main SBC guy looked like he was going to poop in his pants.
With SBC deploying DSL before the November elections, folks in Batavia may become less interested in muni broadband, I am afraid.
Hope not.
