DI-624 router owners keep trying...
(old news - 02:32PM Thursday Jun 24 2004)
tags: hardware
In what may be the longest ongoing effort to obtain stable networking hardware ever recorded in mankind's history, D-Link users continue to tinker with their DI-624 routers, and the endless stream of firmware that's supposed to cure what ails it. The latest firmware update, v2.44 (for hardware version C), popped up on the D-Link international website and supposedly solves a few gaming related issues, such as random reboots while playing the game Asheron's call 2. Oddly while the update appeared on the D-link international site, and briefly on the D-link Canada site, it has yet to appear on the US website.

I was gonna buy one of these doorstops when my linksys was acting up.

Perhaps I'll buy a nice dinner out to celebrate the fact I didn't waste my money!

Not out of anything other than luck, mind you.....

Re: Should have returned it when you had the chanc

I haven't had any issues with DI-624 or 2.4GHz phones. I have setup 2 more DI-624's at family member and friends house. Again no issue with there router or cordless phones. I know 1 of them has a 2.4 ghz phone not sure about the other.

All running in Super G mode.

I almost bought one of these. It would have been my first wireless router. Thankfully the more knowledgeable users on this site talked me out of it. I ended up with a Buffalo G54, and couldn't be happier.

Re: Should have returned it when you had the chanc

I'm just glad I bought a Netgear router, a model RP-614 in fact, I've not heard of anything wrong with that brand. But that's life. When life deals You Lemons, Make Lemonade.

let me guess.. firmware dev't was outsourced a year ago or so?

Based on my experience with DI-604 - I won't touch a D-Link product again except with a sledgehammer.

Re: Dlink Problems

What? You mean the 604 that has been running reliably for me for 3 years now? I might have a problem once every 3 months or so, and that is cured by cycling the power.

I am very happy with my 604.

How much is this thing?

My guess is around $100 or so. Assuming you make $25/hr (or more), if you have spent more than four hours trying to make it work and you are a business then you are losing money. Stop wasting your employers money and get something that works.

If you are a hobbyist/home user then I can see playing around with it until it works.

Oh Boy ....

This isn't hard to use people.

Nope $70 or $50 re-packaged.

"The latest firmware update, v2.44 popped up on the D-Link international website ..."
If you are downloading International firmware for a product you bought in the US, you are asking for trouble.

"I haven't had any issues with DI-624 or 2.4GHz phones. I have setup 2 more DI-624's at family member and friends house."
Same here. I've installed this di-624 and the di-604 at numerous homes and they all work fine. Don't use 2.4Ghz phones when you are worried about a reliable 2.4Ghz network connection. Duh.

"... and the endless stream of firmware that's supposed to cure what ails it."
Damned if you do damned if you don't. If D-Link was to stop spitting out firmware for this product there would be a fuss, and apparently if they do keep making new firmware there is a fuss as well.

I always use the newest firware when I install one of these routers and it works fine with it. The only one I've upgraded with new firmware each time is my own to see how it works/what is changes.

This router is easy to use, provides fast wireless networking, and the setup is rather painless and simple.

I don't know why people seem to have such a problem with them.

You were able to find a di-604 that didnt overheat? my 604 overheats all the time. Drops packets,Disconnects from isp, doesent foward dns information. DI-604 is what i consider one of the worst routers for home networking ever made.

Re: Oh Boy ....

That is because you do not have a DI-714. Mine is as bad as you describe it + it has no options to configure firewall/open ports + it has only a 10 Mbps uplink port, which in combination with crappy hardware technically halves my OOL connection to about 4400 Kbps (PC is hardwired to the router) + it is no longer supported by D-Link (after two pathetic firmware releases, one undercover on their FTP site only: ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/di714/Firmware).

I'm done giving D-Link the benefit of the doubt. Zyxel, here I come

this shoulden't be a problem at all

"Damned if you do damned if you don't"
their so damned why did they bother in the first place

"I don't know why people seem to have such a problem with them"
becase they make such shoddy equipment, and they don't listen to the chip makers example when they say max operating temprature they mean don't go over this temprature, not stick it in an absolutely non functional passive cooling system

and have any of you ever called their tech support ? about 10 people i know have called them, their all idiots

Other coverage

DSLR likes to cover this 624 issue so much, they should put the heat on D-Link and report on the failed promise to deliver WPA support to AirPlus products and what this means for the security of all users on the internet.

Not surprised

Does any manufacturer make a quality home-user internet router these days? I must have been lucky when I bought my ancient RT-311 (for almost $200!!) so long ago. Never had a problem with it.

Re: Not surprised

I hear-ya. The RT-311 was sweet. Guess what - it was really manufactured by ZyXEL and OEM'ed and rebranded by Netgear. ZyXEL continues to make some very good home/soho routers and firewall units. A little more expensive than the typical computer store brands (d-link, Linksys, Netgear, etc.), but full of features, and you have to look a little harder to find them in the US.

Re: This is FUD

Super-G goes around the speed of a 56k modem, whereas the normal Super-G off 54mbps mode goes at the speed that wireless .11g routers are supposed to go at. I would not have bought this had I known that Super-G did NOT work and made the router much slower than without it... I would have bought a normal .11g router without super-g.

Re: So thats why Comp-Usa is giving them away.!!

Actually, I've found that the D-Link is the best of my three routers, I have SMC, Linksys and D-Link. I've never had any trouble with them, recommend them to clients and in general it is my favorite router. It is true that I hated all previous products from this company, but I think that they have come a long way. It is my Linksys router that is non-functioning at this time.

I think that the 108Mbps, standard or not, is a godsend.

No return policy...

Ok...call me stupid...didn't do any research on the damn thing before buying it. Now i'm stuck wit it and need help setting it up.

My problem with the router is...i can't get the router's wizard to run anymore(the default 192.168.0.1). Accessed it a couple of times, made mistakes and reconfigured it. Now i totally can't get it running. Hardware reset doesn't help.

Anyone facing the same problem?

I just purchased a DI-824VUP. Is this issue just related to the specific model(s) mentioned here or all of D-Link's wireless G products? The most recent firmware release for my router gave me the option for WPA. It has been running great for me so far. No complaints.

Now I'm confused and need help...please!

I was pretty set on buying the DI-624 until after I read what you guys have said. Most of you hate it, some of you love it...it seems to just depend on where and how you're using the 624, but I could be wrong. I'm a university student looking for a wireless router to share with my four roommates in a three story apartment...they are all going to be wired and I'm the only one using the wireless (on a PowerBook G4 w/ an AirPort Extreme card). All I'm hoping for in this router is very good range (at least between two floors) and decent and stable connection speeds for surfing the net, downloading .mp3 size files, and the occasional large files. For that kind of set-up, would it be a bad idea to go with the 624? or is there anything else you would recommend I look into? I really don't want to pay more than $80, but I'll be willing to pay a little more $$ for something more reliable. I would really appreciate any replies! And I want to thank you in advance!

Re: Now I'm confused and need help...please!

A few months ago, I was in the market to get a router and I ended up in the same boat as you. I read so many good things about the 624, an then I stumbled upon the bad. Ultimately, I decided to try it out due to a really great sale at BestBuy (DI-624, C1: $45 after MIR). At first it was problematic, resetting all the time, especially when wireless users attempted to connect. However, after updating the f/w (ver2.42) everything has been running great.

I recently lost connectivity on one occasion, but it turned out my dsl was down. Other than that incident, my router has been working flawlessly. I currently have 3 computers hooked up to my DI624. My main computer is connected with a wired connection, the other two being laptops with Netgear WG511's in both (GREAT range, but only 54G). I've tested TURBO mode on static on one occasion and it worked great, trasmitting at ~5MB/s.

The reviews can only say so much. Try it out, see how you like it. If you've been tainted by what other people have to say and want to avoid the DI624 altogether, customers have been giving me good feedback regarding the Netgear WGR614 & Linksys WRT54GS. Otherwise, you could always go out and get a Buffalo Airstation 54Mbps. My two cents

Re: Now I'm confused and need help...please!

avoid the DI624 altogether,
Dlink support is hopeless.
avoid the DI624 altogether,
They waisted the 30 warranty period by not responding timely
avoid the DI624 altogether,
Then they finally came back not willing to replace
avoid the DI624 altogether,
The upgrade procedure is broken
avoid the DI624 altogether,
Now have a dead dlink.

Go netgear.
