DSL Dominates Earth, Targets Moon
Though cable remains king in North America
DSL accounts for 65.8% of the world's broadband connections, with the remainder claimed by cable broadband and other competing technologies. Sixty-nine countries now offer broadband services according to stat farm Point-Topic, and all but eleven of those countries are currently dominated by DSL. Regionally, only in North America does cable continue to lead in broadband deployment. 12 million subscribers joined the global high-speed family in the first quarter of 2004, bringing the world total of broadband connections to 111.5 million.

But yet as big of a town as Worcester, MA is

We can't get DSL here in Tatnuck. It is such a joke when I hear about new DSL tech and how uber fast it is going to be. But yet since I am 22k from the co guess what? NO DSL. All this talk about how Verizon is going to do this and SBC is going to do that. It's all bullsh!t until we see people with it in their homes actually using it. Not some CEO spewing his mouth.

Amen, bring it to my door and I will buy it. I don't care if it's DSL, cable or wireless. Give me broadband or shut the hell up. I'm tired about hearing how many people have broadband when there's a bunch of us who want it and can't get it.

I'm not trying to criticize you but you have come to the wrong site if you don't want to here people talking about their broadband. I like to think of this site as a place where people can talk about broadband; both good, bad and indifferent.

Re: But yet as big of a town as Worcester, MA is

Actually, I was referring to companies who state that they are doing so much to increase the availabliity of broadband, when in truth, what they are doing is only a drop in the bucket. As far as individuals go, if they have broadband, more power to them. But companies like SBC, Insight and others who state they are increasing the availability are over stating what they are doing and what they plan on doing. If I had my way, companies that claim to provide service to counties would have to provide their service to everyone in the county, otherwise, it would be false advertising. Besides, I have broadband (actually better) at work, which in part makes the lack of it at home even worse.

Re: But yet as big of a town as Worcester, MA is

I see where you are coming from. I misunderstood you. I think for coverage to be mandatory for everyone in a particular county would require a similar fee like the USF set by the FCC. It would then be required that DSL be available and affordable to everyone. DSL equipment is still fairly expensive. If an ILEC was to deploy DSL to everyone there would be numerous situations where they would literally never turn a profit for serving a handful of people out in the country. Although ILEC's still have pretty deep pocket books, it would still require an enormous amount of money to get something like this accomplished.

DSL? No thanks, for now...

I'll make the mighty switch when the prices/speeds don't blow.

I'll keep my 10MBit/1MBit with optonline and $40 a month for now...

If DSL is aiming for the Moon, Then

I've a better one, If DSL is aiming for the Moon, Then Wireless is aiming for Mars as the Territory is sparsely settled and open for exploitation. After all Mars has the Solar Systems tallest mountain, Olympus Mons.

Does this mean that they've finally fixed that distance from the CO problem that DSL has always had? Or are they planning to land a CO on the Sea of Tranquility?

Well where I'm at now is about 6,000' from the nearest CO, It used to be I was near 26,800' from the nearest CO here in Hesperia. So Verizon(ex-GTE) has come a long way, I'm moving to Yermo(It's about 16 miles East of Barstow(It's next to the I15 Fwy, Beyond the Ca58/I15/I40 Fwy Interchanges)), California on or about July 1st and am starting DSL service out there at about that time. It just means some new email addresses too, among other things.

Yermo is also home to a HUGE Union Pacific Rail Yard, as is Barstow, though the one in Barstow is BNSF RR.

Re: DSL? No thanks, for now...

I've got to agree. I'm a Comcast customer enjoying 3000/256 without a tech support call in over 3 years. I'm trying a free month of Verizon DSL, and have experienced nothing but about 760/384. Comcast's extra speed is well worth the extra $10/month.
I'll be staying with Comcast and making a trip to the Post Office to return Verizon's modem.........

DSL- world leader by default

And had these 111 million subbscibers around the world been wired for CATV, cable broadband would by far be the world leader.

of course there are more dsl subs world wide. homes in other countries, especially third world countries, are going to be wired for power first, then phone.

how about them burkina faso cable companies?

pointless article by some dsl public relations hack.

I Wish We Had Cable Broadband

This secluded little town (Pop 600) has DSL but no cable. Satellite is the only other broadband option. I'm only using the basic so-called high speed DSL package, but if I wanted the super duper mega ultra high speed 768/128 connection package its a mere $100 a month the last time I checked, but they said that's usually only used by business customers and that I shouldn't have any need for such deadly blazing speeds. We are actually considering moving for the sole reason of finding a better ISP.

Earthlink call

Even though my number is on the national do not call list (what a joke) I received a call from Earthlink with their promotion. 29.99 for 6 months, 49.99 after for a 39.99 average first 12 months.

The mental giant on the phone just could not understand why I would not want to spend 39.99 for 1.5/128 instead of my current 42.99 for 3.0/256.

DSL at its current pricing and speeds is a lost cause

VDSL

It all depends where you live...the cable ISP where I live has overloaded servers and poor tech support.I've had ADSL for 3 years and was pretty happy, the cable ISP has a new deal out here where its 5Mbps down 1Mbps up. Sure its nice to have that 5Mbit line...but I use FTP's and Torrent..so downloading a DVD-r @ 330kB/s is no biggie for me. And I rarely see people downloading any faster then that off the service's I use. I just got a VDSL line to my house that can transfer 45.5Mbps...so dsl isn't that far behind..and having a 3Mbit line..I've seen no big difference in speed latency with my ISP..only better service with the phone company.

I have both DSL and Cable

My cable Roadrunner always tests at 2-2.3 / 320-340 my Verizon DSL use to test at 700/128 then I called for upgrade and now I test at 660/128 for last week. I have to work up the patience to call Verizon billing to question why the upgrade failed since my line tests good for 768/768 package and not 400 feet from test is a tn that tests good for 7.1/768. I feel there may be ill feelings during my call.

NO FAN OF THE SUPPORT FOR DSL.

By far cable is the best technology. Its just the law of physics. Twisted pair is designed for voice frequency and cable is designed for multiplexed video channels. If cable saw the need, they could offer whatever BW you would buy. They do need to mature but phone is old and grey!!!!!

Yet everyone who says that doesn't realize "twisted pair, unshielded little copper wires" is what's carrying your ethernet signal from your cable modem.

Oh and by the way, the structure of cable is more similar to that of any other computer cord, having both a positive and negative conductor, therefore eliminating the need for shielding. And coaxial was meant for analog RF signals, so lets not play the "which was designed for what" game.

DSL way behind in deployment...

SBC just recently, (1 month) offered DSL in my area, which is about 10 minutes east of St.Paul and Mpls... I've had cable internet, (Mediaone, ATTBI, Comcast) for nearly 3 years now at my home. I don't know why it took the phone companies sooooo long to offer DSL, I am approx. 1/2 mile from the CO. Who knows why, but thats why they are playing catchup now IMO...

If they had deployed around the same time I would have opted for DSL for the static IP... but I am sticking with cable 3mbps/256kbps until SBC gives me a seriously generous offer to make the switch.

Re: DSL way behind in deployment...

DSL is by far the best. I'll keep my DSL over cable any day! By the way, watch out for cellular/wireless technology in the next few years. It will be the transport for almost all of your services and cable companies will be the obsolete player of the past. Wires, who needs wires?
