Makes its way to the living room
(old news - 01:23PM Monday Jun 21 2004)
tags: Video · alternatives · software
As a follow-up to our discussion on using Bit Torrent and RSS to create an automated system of downloading video files; Slashdot points to a new plugin for the MythTV Linux PVR project that blends the two great tastes together. Dubbed Torrentocracy, the project is one of the first efforts to take some of the RSS & Torrent blends being seen on-line, and nudge them toward more legitimate uses (or perhaps not) in the living room. Ironically enough, a project focused on distributing content and bandwidth was Slashdotted to death, so the project link may not currently work. A non-Slashdotted screenshot is available here.

Legitimate Uses?

The stated purpose is an adjunct to VCR or Tivo style time shifting... except that most BitTorrents of TV shows are NOT legal and most content providers are not at all happy about people sharing them this way. Also, BitTorrent practically requires that participants be uploaders, so all are violators, and all are easily tracked.

So unless content providers authorize their own Torrents, this nice little development is doomed to the underground.

Thanks for the FreshMeat link by the way.

Hosting misconfiguration

Unfortunately, the site went down only because my dumb hosting company had "max_clients" set to 10. It was actually up the whole time but refusing access. Grrr.
