Backs off deployment numbers

Comcast saw its stock rise twelve cents last week on the news it would be offering VoIP service to 40 million homes by the end of 2006. Of course once the smoke cleared, many outlets (Light Reading being one) pointed out that while the comcast network does pass 40 million potential homes, it actually sells TV service to 21 million of those customers and digital cable TV service to 7.9 million. Even Comcast spokespeople were trying to calm excitement about the initial announcement, one informing USAToday "It depends on how our tests work out." Oppenheimer analyst Thomas Eagan offers the best abridged version of the coming cable VoIP timeline we've seen: "If you are a Cablevision subscriber, you're seeing it now. If you're a Time Warner customer, you'll hear about it by the end of the year. And if you're a Cox and Comcast customer, you'll hear about it in 2005."

A useful "success" metric...

... is when Comcast has more VoIP customers than it has spam-sending ones.

Re: A useful "success" metric...

Wow. I've not gotten one spam in the 4 months since i switched from Qworst. Am I lucky or what? Maybe it's because the crappy old cable lines are letting them leak out on the way to me!:p I wouldn't doubt it. They are coming in two days to "take a look at" it and in the meanwhile I have less than 700 down. All this after being told to powercycle my modem 5 billion times.

As for VOIP...why bother? Cable internet and TV. A phone from a wireless carrier. I'm all set. Other than the "neato" factor I'm just having a hard time justifying why I might need this. After all, I got rid of Qworst because I didn't need a phone in my home just to support DSL. VOIP...bleh on any account unless you don't have a wireless phone or you have an awful prepaid plan that costs a lot or something.

Just my two cents.

Nit-pick

WOW you really caught them with their pants down...

I don't see the big deal in the numbers. They will be offering it to 40 million potential customers. Trying to argue is just too nit-picky.

Just like they currently offer CATV to 40 million potential customers and Cable Internet to 36 million potential customers. The "offered" number is based on the number of homes passed.

How many actual VoIP customers they reel in will be interesting. Their current Monthly Average Revenue Per Subscriber for Digital Phone is $47.34. I would not expect the fish to start biting unless their VoIP offering is sub-$40.
