Verizon qualification oddities continue
(old news - 09:39AM Sunday May 23 2004)
tags: dsl · install
As evident by this growing Verizon forum thread, a large number of users trying to qualify for the new 384kbps upstream speeds are finding that their houses have magically moved farther away from their Central Office. Reports continue to file in from DSL users whose loop lengths are suddenly 2-6,000 feet longer than their last measurements - sometimes only months earlier. We'll hopefully have an answer as to whether or not Verizon has changed their distance calculations (or invented organic, growing copper) sometime this week.

Tried to get DSL

But the service sucks. They could not get the line
to work for DSL. I am Less than 5000 Feet from CO.
On A F1 line. Thats a direct connection into the frame.

Verizon can't get anything right.

Re: Tried to get DSL

It will NOT work because of the copper's "bad condition", NOT because of the 5000 FEET, the phone line where I live must be over 50 yrs old or older. There good what there where mint for phone line not BROADBAND.

See, this is whats happening, Verizon fails to take into account the fact that they are the ones always moving there stations and offices, I mean thats what happens when you loose your lease in a strip mall...

I also tried to get dsl. I talked to one of the people on the phone and he told me i was 7500 feet from the CO. well, i got a call 2 weeks later saying they were going to bump my date to turn it on back. a week later, i got the same call. then the next week, i got a call telling me i couldn't get the service. I talked to them on the phone and he "ran two tests" saying i could get the service. It took them a month to tell me i couldn't get the service. Now i am really P.O.ed ! I could have, and should have just gotten cable before i even thought about Verizon's DSL. I have a relative that works for them, and he says they sell it to people all the time that can't even get it. they need a better "testing" system, or just need to stop lying to people. :m ad:

My mobile home

According to Verizon,I have the fastest Brick Rancher in my neighborhood.
Moving at the blinding speed of 2,033' a day.
From Monday to Thursday of last week it moved 6100'
It seems to be resting now.
I sure hope the Postman can find me on Monday.

I really do live in a real Mobile Home,

And to think that I really do live in a real Mobile Home (Made by Redman Mobile Homes in 1978), One with Axles too, Now having those stick built homes(Built on site, instead of in a factory) being considered a Mobile Home is really strange. Me I'm 6,000' from My CO, It's a new one and It's not visible to broadbandreports.com, Verizon says It's for Security reasons of course. What speed would I get? I don't know, $29.95 is tempting, But I would only switch If I could get that rate and get 3000k/256k at the very least, As that is what Charter Pipeline gives Me, That and 5 Free email boxes, Free Setup and of course Free Install too.

Ahhhhh, i think you are incorrect about that. The $30 dollar price is for 1.5/384, assuming you have the freedom package, otherwise it is $35.

Huh? There is no "128/384" plan from Verizon that I'm aware of and in any case, the $30/month deal (which I have) was for 768/128 (which I'm currently getting) and now is for 1.5/384 (which billing said I should soon be receiving).

Re: I really do live in a real Mobile Home,

Just curious, how far from the CO are you to qualify for the 1.5/384 ? I know I'll never see those kind of speeds since I'm so far out now to almost the point of not receiving DSL anymore, interesting isn't it?

Seems about right....

They finally up and raise speeds. THey make themselves look good in the media and with their customers because they are finally coming around.

But wait, lets up the distance of all our customers so we do not actually have to give it to them.

I see them doing this very easily. Verizon is nothing but a bunch of crooks.

dsl temporary answer before fiber

I'll be the first to admit Verizon moves slowly, sometimes painfully so, and the new DSL speeds are way overdue (3mb/784kb) along with the new distances achievable for minimum spec. I also think that if someone can only get a minimum spec line they should have a lower price point for that spec, and let those of us who have the top lines pay the full price. But moreso, they need to get lines competitive with cable, and cable seems quite able to provide 5-6mb down, where DSL seems to make up for the lower down 3 now, maybe 6 later, with a better up 768k, which is a welcome refresh. People who send pictures to relatives know what upspeed slowdown is all about I think right?

But fiber is the ultimate answer, and, providing they can learn to move fast in implementing it, will overcome so much of this line quality issue. It stands to put them in the forefront of the speed race, and, imo, its kind of sad to watch cable making money hand over fist but with so little vision as to implementing fiber themselves. Perhaps they feel they can squeeze more out of the cable they have to keep up (limited knowhow on that tech side of things for my part honestly).

But while I urge folks to make sure Verizon gives up competitive spec (3-6mb down) now, keep eyes on the fiber thing, because quite honestly I'd rather have a 3 down, skip 6 and go to fiber after. So that means if getting DSL requires rerouting an entire line to your neck of the woods, you might want to figure a way to give them more incentive to run fiber to you. Practically speaking it should be easier and the service should be better. If you only face getting a few kinks worked out of your copper line, well then by all means remind them that the customer has needs

Love DSL, but I want fiber badly.
