A new market for RIAA 'lawyer proofing'
(old news - 04:51PM Friday May 07 2004)
tags: Fileswapping
An entirely new industry has sprung up to capitalize on the fear of RIAA attorneys among file-traders. From Anonymous DSL to various snake oil software solutions, there's suddenly a huge market in giving end-users the belief they're actually anonymous. The latest in the line of "anonymity" providing companies is Optisoft, operators of Blubster and Piolet, who claim they've got their own answer. Reuters reports on their efforts at lawyer-proofing, which likely will be about as successful as previous attempts by Earthstation 5 (proxy servers) or FileTopia (encryption). Optisoft's owners say their proprietary approach constantly shifts user IP addresses, and disguises the details of files in transit.

Can't ever be 100% anonymous

At some point in a P2P transaction, the downloading computer needs to be able to reach the sharing computer. At that point it gets the IP address of the sharing computer. (You can use proxies, but those can seriously slow things down to the point of making the P2P connection unusable.) If you hide your IP address from everyone else, then how do you expect other computers to deliver electronic information to yours? (Kind of like telling someone to mail you the information but refusing to give your mailing address.)

Right and if law enforcement thought that you were using the PO Box to send/receive something illegal, the Post Office (or the third party company) would tell them who paid for the box.

Exactly! God, I laugh soooo hard when I hear people talk about how they think there are such things as "IP scramblers" or some snake-oil thing like that that will make you anonymous!

There ARE anonymous programs

Its been discussed in the Filesharing Forum: »new kinds of anonymous p2p software ...

Some of them include:

Freenet (and its companion, Frost).
MUTE
GNUnet

They may not be as fast as leeching of a T3, but not as slow as you think.

Subpoenas Will Force Them To

turn you in. Criminal activities such as child porn and illegal P2P filesharing are not safe from prosecution no matter what those anonymous software sites say. You break the law and you will be caught and prosecuted.

Who is more Stooopid

Everytime I read one of these postings I have to ask myself
who is more stupid, The RIAA suing their customers, or the P2P's searching for the fix for their bootleg addiction.

IP Address Registry

I think every internet account should have a fixed IP Addy and the ISP should be required to maintain an accurate and up-to-date PUBLIC list of the who those IP Addresses are being used by.

I think the point of NAK's post was that we should do away with dynamic IP addresses...

The bad part of that is the fact that we would run out of IP addresses REAL FAST.

The whole point of dynamic IP addresses is to allow a many to one relationship.

A dial-up ISP may have 5,000 users, however, only own 1,000 IP addresses because their maximum load on their service is only 1,000 users at any given time and point.

I think that's the point of NAK's post. DHCP should be eliminated for public IPs.

To comment on the other -- I'm not sure how these things work or how effective they are. However, I did read that a new bread of P2P using a collection of clients that each broadcast tiny pieces of a whole file by using some kind of broadcast streaming protocol, could eliminate the ability to trace the source. I'm not sure how well it would work but...

I sometimes think that RIAA uses the forum posts here to "test" there latest lame brained back room senate paid for mood induced crack pot schemes...They always manage to get a rise out of everyone...."DHCP should be eliminated for public IPs"...That would wipe out about 2,000,000 jobs in Silicon Valley alone....

Re: IP Address Registry

As an experienced hacker, I can honestly say there are NO surefire idiot proof ways to block your IP when using a P2P... But from my personal experience if you are very careful and use a "legit" IP masker, you can foil most attempts to track/locate a P2P download... Just ask Kevin Mitnick or Steve Wozniak... They are two of the more famous hackers in history... as well as my personal idols... so I hope I have passed along a little assurance to my fellow miscreants...

Re: IP Address Registry

A proxy server is the only way you can download files without worries from the RIAA. You can bounce off of servers from any country in the world. You can also have a server download a file, then you download from the server after it is completed.

** Ahhhhhhh I can't resist it!!!!!! **
Kevin Mitnick was/is a dumbass! Anyone who thinks he's some great hacker is either a silly n00b or some kiddy scripter wannabe.

Yes they're called "ISPs" by Canadians. To Americans they're called "ISPs and a VPN connection to a Canadian ISP".
