Some Earthlink customers work the system
(old news - 10:33AM Thursday Apr 22 2004)
tags: dsl
While Earthlink's decision to only offer 3Mbps upgrades to new customers has existing customers angry, some users on Covad provisioned lines have found a way around the decision. Customers in the latter part of this thread indicate that they've managed to call Earthlink's "saves department" and arrange an upgrade to 3Mbps, though they won't be privy to the $29.95 for 6 months promotional offer. Both existing Covad and BellSouth provisioned customers otherwise need to wait until later this year to see their upgrades.

Why not...

Just let people have it when they ask? Why make us jump through hoops? Idiots. They'll get their due eventually. People will just go to other services.

Because Earthlink is dependent on other companies that don't necessarily care about their well-being to provide service. In the case of using BellSouth to provision their service, they are willingly putting the care of their customer in the hands of a competitor!

If Earthlink had built out its own network, this wouldn't have been a problem. <sarcasm>Maybe they can do it now since they outsourced all their tech support.</sarcasm>

I just ordered Earthlink DSL on April 2nd and I am provisioned through Covad, unfortunately I am too far away from the CO to get the upgrade.

I have been promised it however......

I was promised the upgrade 4 days ago but have not received any email. I was told yesterday that there is a backlog and I should be upgraded in 7-14 days.

Re: I have been promised it however......

I had called EL and they stated to me that I can not have the new speeds. I have been an EL customer for a long time, but we are moving next month and will be changing services. Not only due to this but the outsourcing of jobs to other countries and the fact that I never even got speeds higher than 700/128 has me wonder if it's even worth the $52.50 a month.

In the past they have given me free months to make up fo spped and disconects.

If you are receiving no higher than 700/128 and they state you cannot receive the new speeds, then that would suggest to me that you are either a) not provisioned under Covad, b) are over 10000 feet from the CO [the new speeds requiring you to be under that], or c) both.

Might want to think about that.

They told me that I would receive an email regarding the upgrade. I did not. I called them back after 4 days because it seems like others received the email one day after talking to them. Earthlink stated that there is now a backlog and it may take from 7-14 working days to receive the email.

3Mbps where?

I don't see the 3 mbps offer on their website only the 1.5 service.
I am in NJ if that makes any difference.

I been eyeing this offer myself but I'm giving Covad.net (my present ISP) a chance to respond.

Re: 3Mbps where?

Thanks for the link. I must have missed the print at the bottom of the page. When I tried it came back with only the 1.5Mbps so must not be on offer in NJ.

Some people never update the site. More irony, an ISP that doesn't update their website.

EARTHSTINK

Earthlink sucks! Ive been with them for 3 yrs now and not by choice. mostly due to moving before my contract is up and then forced into another 1 yr contract or pay outrageous fees! Although speeds have been good for the price 1.3 to 1.5M at last three places I've lived. every couple months or so I have major connection problems. Conclusion: earthlink aint worth it! especially now that i can get 3M cable, but I'm stuck in this DAMNED contract!

hmmm

Covad and Qwest have some sharing deal going on. Then I hear Covad/Earthlink users getting more download angers me when I get my dsl directly from Qwest. All of that bandwidth comes from the same CO they just have a different label. If they would all corporate into one business together MAYBE they could actually get the ball rolling. I talk to people all the time that have 10 and 12mb speeds in other countries, but here we are poking along. The problem here is they talk about it, but never follow through. All these ideas of better TCP/IP and better speeds and this and better that. My questions is WTF is it??? Will it be sometime this century?

Saves Dept.?

what is saves department? How did these people get it and others have to wait. I have EL on my main number. I get nothing available when I do a check. However, when I run it on my second number it states that I qualify. So, it appears I can get it but I still have a contract on my current plan. How can I get them to just upgrade and skip the $29.99 promotion like the others did?
Please respond to email.

Thanks
Marcus

Re: Saves Dept.?

The "saves" department is the cancellation department. Customers who wish to cancel their service are routed to this department. Call and ask to speak with someone in this department to see if they can upgrade you.

3Mbps down, but only 128Kbps up - I'll pass

The problem with the whole thing is the upload speed. I'm presently at 1.5/384. I will really be disappointed if at some point they move me to a 3/128 plan. I could not live with the 128 upload.
