Nextel offers 1.5Mbps mobile broadband
(old news - 01:02PM Wednesday Apr 14 2004)
tags: wireless
Tipped by Karl Bode See Profile
Nextel has surprisingly opened up the trial of their Flarion based Flash OFDM wireless broadband service, and is now offering the service to customers in North Carolina. The wireless service is expected to offer mobile speeds of 1.5Mbps downstream and 375kbps upstream; bandwidth which easily bests nearly all third generation alternatives being offered in the US (which isn't saying much). Via press release, the company has announced several pricing options: $35 per month with a 150MB monthly data cap at reduced speeds, or $75 per month for unlimited downloads at maximum speed.

Their primary competitor, Verizon's EvDO network, promises real-world downstream speeds between 300 and 500kbps, and upstream speeds around 100kbps. Flarion and Nextel argue their service will be considerably faster in real world application, with lower latency (and, we now learn, $5 less a month). You can download Flarion's OFDM whitepaper here (pdf), which claims their technology is capable of offering bursts up to 3Mbps.

Another selling point of Flash OFDM technology is that it offers less than 20 milliseconds of latency and full QoS - nearly competing with landline services. In fact, that's Nextel's intent; executives hoping users will pay the difference in cost for the ability to have home-speed broadband on the go. For those interested, additional technical specifics are available at the Nextel or Flarion websites.

Nextel executives recently noted that a national deployment of the technology will likely cost the company in excess of two billion dollars. At the same time, Verizon is expanding their EvDO network to 100 U.S. cities in their own billion dollar deployment. While the two wireless giants battle for control of the mobile broadband market, their competitors are tinkering with less aggressive approaches while they wait for demand to increase.

Nextel and Verizon's closest competitor will likely be the combined resources of AT&T Wireless and Cingular, who are both deploying GPRS/EDGE networks, and will likely combine resources once Cingular's acquisition moves forward. Puttering along at between 100-130kbps, and with a price-tag of $79.99 a month, the service may not have legs to stand on for very long.

As part of a longstanding deal with Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, AT&T Wireless did recently announced they'd be supporting UMTS wideband CDMA service in San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego and Dallas before the end of the year. That network will offer downstream speeds closer to 384kbps.

Re: 1.5

Tell me about it. I wish it would come here so I could dump Comcast. They are my only option and I hate them.

I wonder what other features there will be. Like static ip's and server operations. I need something bad in my home for this. I have excellent Nextel coverage where I am. I would easily pay $75 per month for their service.

Re: 1.5

Would not be large servers. Just small and personal. Very little traffic. Problem is that right now I have nowhere to run them. As Comcast forbids them to be run on their network. Even for business customers with business accounts and static ip's.

IP addresses are likely to be private ones (i.e. 10.X). Nextel is also employing transparent firewalling to keep certain types of traffic from entering or leaving their network. Don't start salivating just yet. This is a web surfing, email checking product. No wireless provider in their right mind would let the typical DSLR/BBR power user on their network without a leash.

If you read the tech docs the service will see burst speeds of 3mbps, bout the same as cable. Upload around 384 and low latency. Supposedly easy to deploy as well, with them just plugging the base station into their IP network. Woo hoo. I too cant wait untill they deploy it nationally.

It is also expected to cost around 40-50/month according to flarions estimate, however it looks like Nextel bumbed up that price.

$75/month is pretty steep for unlimited bandwith. You could go over the 150MB limit very fast at 1.5mbps.

Cingular's got something new...

Sounds great, but Cingular's got something new to throw into the mix. A "MEdia Plan" for 19.99 a month that somehow includes unlimited GPRS data, available as an add-on to voice plans. May be slow, but a heck of a deal.

Nextel has horrible customer relations. Dealing with them is like talking to the IRS not a business. I dont know whats wrong with them. Yeah yeah we all have complaints against some company one way or the other, but nextel just caters too much to production type people.

They need to concentrate on aquiring more customers, but they dont seem to have a problem with holding such a small peice of the marketshare so whatever floats their boat.

Dont get me wrong their customer service is good, fast answer times short waits, Im talking about their busiess strategy, contract terms etc.etc.. They are like what AOL has degraded to now without the 20 million customers;).

The non=existance of a family plan, the low minutes and slim features make that evident. They are BANKING on PTT. Cant have your eggs in one basket. While nextels wireless internet service will be the fastest they are the LAST to come to the table. Years behind other carries that have people locked in contracts:).

Nextel is good to longtime customers Im sure, but that doesnt mean jack when you cant get new meat in.:).

Why would a carrier that focuses on BUSINESS customers with a network DESIGNED for PTT offer "family" plans and so on? (Keep in mind that it takes half the network resources for Nextel to handle a PTT conversation than a normal phone call.)

BTW, the Nextel Broadband service doesn't run in the same spectrum the phone/PTT service and their current slow packet data does (ESMR) -- there's a reason Nextel acquired MMDS licenses.

If you think nextel is good to long time customers i have 3 phones for sale about 3 months off their network 3 years we had them for ptt but it just got to expensive to deal with when sprint had the same plan but with 1000 minutes for half the cost. 'hell i showed em the sprint ad and they said well we don't match prices and I said well you don't have me as a customer.

Try att its non existant. When you talk with them on the phone they do everything on an imaginary keyboard. That way when you get your 1,200 dollar bill because you were roaming the whole time even though they told you that you were switched to a no roaming plan, and then call them up they have no record that you tried to change it. Then 10 minutes of bitching before they decide to believe you and knock the charges off and then reinstate the no roaming plan. They then end the conversation with, You may have to do this again next month if you get charged for roaming again. Its like WTF.

As long as it doesn't use proprietary devices.

I think this is a great thing... as long as I'm not forced to use some proprietary PC card to use it. My sister has Sprint PCS, and while slower, she doesn't have to use some wonky (and generally Windows-only) PC (PCMCIA) card to use it. I've seen a few that force you to install some useless card.

So, cell phone companies: Listen. People like me will never use your service if you use proprietary cards. If you let me use a Bluetooth phone and industry-standard protocols then I will. And it has to support at very least Mac OS X (Linux would be nice, too) in addition to the ubiquitous Windows support. Otherwise, screw your proprietary technology.

I should add:

If these devices do not use Bluetooth, USB-to-phone cable or Wifi then I won't use the service.

Also, if they make me install some sort of proprietary software on my computer I most likely won't use it, either.

Well then how do you plan on connecting to the network? Flarion's OFDM is not available through the phone, so that leaves no choice but to use PC cards.

Then I guess I'll never use Flarion's OFDM then. There's no reason why they can't build the technology in to the phones, and then allow you to Bluetooth from the computer to the phone on to the network.

Why would they build it into the phone when it's absolutely useless to the phone? It'll just add to the size and cost of the phone, when there's absolutely no need. The vast majority of people don't care about having to slide in a PC card to use the wireless network.

The main reason for these cellular wireless plans is to allow the phone on the network. Most of these phones have built-in browsers, e-mail capability, etc. The computer "piggy-backing" on to the network is secondary. That's why it should be built-in to the phone.

Unless we're talking about WiMax. Then that should be built in to the computer itself.

Alternative for lots of people

This could be a GREAT alternative for users who are already paying 50/mo for cable. With a download speed that was (until recently) the same as cable (except for rr) and a higher upload speed than most cable companies (once again with rr being the exception), this service allows you to take that broadband on the road with you too! This actually is a pretty good price for the unlimited plan if you have a nextel phone already and hate your local broadband service.

Check the nextel broadband web site to see that their service is tier'd and to get 1.5 mb service, the cost is not competitive with cable. the cable competitive price point only provides for 750kb down/215 up.

Ordered today and will report back on this thread

I ordered the service today and asked for a Platinum service level and PCMCIA card since I plan to use this around Durham and RTP. I sure hope this works out and will report back technical discoveries and details if yall are interested.

Some things I noticed.

1. They ran a credit check and asked for CC. The credit check involved answering some address history account and details.

2. They recorded my conversation and made me say that I would abide by the AUP and what not.

That's definitely Nextel. They always run a credit check and the standards aren't so easy.

People can complain about their prices and not offering a lot of family type plans. The fact is they have some good packages. The part that costs and they haven't come down on price is the PTT part of the bill.

I've had them for over 4 years and love their service. I receive all incoming minutes for free. Nextel has brought a lot of good packages for the consumer market in the last year or so. Are the competitive on price? Maybe not..but I've never had a problem with their service.

This service has absolutely nothing to do with cell phones, aside from the fact that it's being offered by a cellular company. The service is used by PCs.

I just have Verizon Wireless Broadband Acess (in San Diego, EVDO area)for about a week, $79/month - 1 year contract, $299 for thier Airprime 5220 PC Card. Speed usually around 70KB/s download(=~ 700Kbps), I was on 24/7 for the past 7 days with only 1 lost connection (I'm on IRC all the time, so I logged whenever I got disconnected)

So far so good, I don't really have any complaining about wireless connection. Go Verizonnn !!!
