IM client now installs Weatherbug
(old news - 05:00PM Friday Apr 09 2004)
tags: privacy · software
Apparently the controversy AOL generated when they added Wild Tangent to their AOL Instant Messenger client wasn't enough. Users in our Security Forum point out the company is now bundling Weather Bug as well. Both Weatherbug and Wild Tangent are now installed by default unless you specify otherwise. Wild Tangent got under the skin of many users because the uninstallation process is a twenty four step nightmare that requires a blow-torch, some fishing line, and a team of highly trained archaeologists. One would think that software makers would learn a lesson from Real's popularity plunge, and try to keep the bloat to a minimum.

Acid Test...

A real good test to see if these "bundles" are of any worth is to install them; then run an anti-spyware product. If it suddenly renders the applications worthless... Oops!

Re: Acid Test...

Agreed!

I used to use AIM back when it was plain and simple..without the BLOAT.

Nice to see how they keep messing things up with each new release.

I now dislike AIM and will not use it.
I would never recommend or install AOL's garbage onto a persons machine.

Too many new "unexpected surprises" that end up becoming a security risk.

Thanks AOL!!
You have alternatives people.

Why do people have to bundle? What is wrong with just the program?

I use weatherbug to begin with, why do I need another?? Why can't they ask if you want all this extra bullsh*t stuff at install time.

I used to use Weatherbug before all this bundling, but I uninstalled it a while ago. WTF is with AOL bloating their IM software for?

Mmmm. Mudbugs.
I am going to miss JazzFest this year.

Invite me to your next boil?

Seriously my local TV station WCAU NBC affiliate Philadelphia, PA has been pushing the old bug for quite some time.
I have swatted "the bug" out of many a friend's system.

Personally I use Intellicast. Doesn't do a darn thing except tell you the weather AFAIK.
(Y'all remeber Intellicast and "push" broadcasting? )

Is AOL attempting to trump Real Networks?

Last time I installed AIM it didn't give me the option not to install Wild Tangent. The only reason it didn't install was because my software firewall blocked it's attempt to download the WT install files off the internet. Even then I had to modify the startup files to keep it from running the WT install program again.

At least now they give you an option to install them or not so I consider this an improvement.

Still this is why I hate AIM and won't recommend it anymore. Maybe we need AIMLite, just like there was KazaaLite

Re: Excelent!

Yes, I've used it off and on. My latest stint with it, now four or so months, is being very rewarding. It's very simple, I can connect to ICQ as well and does the same job AIM does.

Learn from your predecessors

AIM should have learned from ICQ's fall in popularity. Keep it simple! Chat, buddy info, voice, file transfer, a little customization, and MAYBE video. That's all there needs to be.

Re: Real is owned by AOL...

Yeah really, AIM is made by AOL, every piece of software they make is going to be bloated. If someone was using aim and wanted me to message them, I personally would tell them to get on another messenger (yahoo or msn), dont want to install any aol garbage.

They didn't actually make the code for winamp, they only throw in some icons on install... The new winamp LITE 5.x is not bloated at all.

Still doesn't change the fact that they own it.

I believe that they only give some hosting space and money for the project. Does AOL client use winamp as it's media player? Last time I checked AOL was moving away for licensing to owning (switching from IE to gecko(?)/mozilla and winamp)

That also got my attention.
said by The Nullsoft Story:

Re: Real is owned by AOL...

AOL was suppose to switch from IE to Netscape when they got them instead they signed another agreement with MS.

AOL will never get out of the contract with IE. They'll keep resigning. Then they go sue and say that they are a monoply cause they don't allow another companies browser to come with Windows when you first get it. Correct me if I am wrong but back in ME it came with Netscape as well as IE. Also AOL came on the system regardless of who you got your system from.

AOL just wants something to bitch about and wants a away to get their money they are losing from ppl switching from their bull shit network to a REAL ISP.

Someone needs to make a system like AOL build it off something different then IE---if they wanna provide a difference----then charge less...

would be a great start up and a great way to compete with AOL.

But then again isnt that what Netscape Internet Service is for? a stripped down service of AOL thats cheaper? I'm actually suprised people arent moving to Netscape's service from AOL. But Netscape only bills Credit Card...AOL doesn't.

Sheesh. . .

It's just not fun to beat up on AOL anymore. They screw up so often, and so obviously, that it's just not sporting to go after them at this point.

So, I won't bash this time. But I've just got to ask: Is there some learning disability among the management? Do they just not get it?

The best rhetorical question of the year. We all know "management" suffers from learning disablities. Otherwise...they wouldn't be "management."

Luckily, MacGuyver can uninstall it using a rubber band, paper clip, and a straw. Oh, and his handy-dandy Swiss Army Knife.

I'm using gAIM for more than a year and I'm happy with it. Plain and simply. Has many unique options and it's much cleaner.
There is also Trilian.

Low-carb Software

Just wait until the 'low carb' attitude hits software. lol

Just remove the all the excess 'bloat' and you have a healthier piece of software.

Execept in Real's case. Even if all the bloatware was removed, it still would be crap. Crap is all Real puts out.

How long..

Corporate suits are all greedy and ambitious.
How long until one breaks formation and offers consumers what they need and want- unencumbered internet access.
How long the the golden stream of profit that awaits the one that comes over to OUR side overwhelms their no doubt tepid loyalty to one another?
Indeed, the lack of anything but maximum effort to ifiltrate and spy stinks of illegal collusion between the A*L, S*C, and certain others.
When we finally achieve regime change and their paid servant no longer holds power..what to these *ssholes think is going to happen to them?
Speaking to the suits at the majors isps i say: why not come over to our side for the big win..before you're buried with the others..
