Earthlink Speed Upgrades But only for new customers it seems... Additional details of Earthlink's speed upgrades are popping up in our Earthlink forum. From an e-mail making the rounds among subscribers, it looks like new Earthlink subscribers in Covad territory will have access to 3Mpbs speeds starting today, provided they're within 10,000 feet of their CO. Existing customers in Covad's service area won't be seeing the upgrades until later this year, and they're not thrilled about it. ----- On April 8th, 2004, EarthLink will have the ability to offer download speeds of up to 3 mbps to New EarthLink High Speed subscribers. This will only be available to subscribers that are within the Covad footprint and within 10,000 feet from the CO. The 3.0 product will provide the customer a download of up to 3 mbps at the same price as the current offering of 1.5 mbps. Upload speed remains at 128kbps. This is still a best effort service, so speeds are not guaranteed. Product Attributes: Available to New EarthLink High Speed subscribers that are in the Covad footprint and within 10,000 feet from the Central Office. Monthly fee: $49.95 Early Term Fee: $149.95 -12 month commitment Setup Fee: based on promotion offer Due to system limitations, we will be unable to offer the 3.0 speeds to existing Covad customers at this time, but should be available later this year. If a current broadband customer calls in requesting this promotion, please advise them this is for new customers only. ---- Offering the upgrades to existing customers allows them to stress test the system. Oddly, though many Earthlink/Covad customers currently see 384kbps upstream speeds, these two Earthlink promotional pages make references to 128kbps being the upstream speeds of the 3Mbps packages. Employees indicate upgrades for users provisioned with BellSouth lines are in the works.

... then call right back as a new customer and reorder.
of course, you will probably have some downtime while they re-provision everything, send someone to disconnect, then reconnect. dsl is stupid.

| | | | Re: Yeah, uh huh... This will probably be like the "$39.95 for the life of the account" deal that I signed up for that really meant "$39.95 until we decide that you should pay $49.95". Before I demand that they increase my speeds, I think I'll wait and see if they keep their word to new customers and not raise the price on them. | |

Hey, I signed up under those terms too... It lasted 10-12 months.

You're lucky, for me it lasted for 6 months and at the time I signed up I had a choice of $49.95 no setup fee or $39.95 with a $99 setup fee.....I finally fought it out with them proving that the other deal was better if they weren't going to adhere to their original terms and they gave me a few months free. But still, it comes down to bait and switch and if not for getting the speeds I get (which were considered good a few years ago) I would have left long ago. They had better come through with higher speeds very soon cause I will be demanding lower prices if I am paying the same for 1.5 as someone else is for 3 for an extended period of time.

This is SOOOOOOOOOOO true I was a covad customer for 12 months and had signed up for 1.5 What I got was 500k. After many hours on the phone and techs coming to the house I was told "what we offer is a best effort service", when I asked to be let out of my contract they said no! That 500k is still service and they were fullfilling their end of the contract. PLEASE DO NOT EVER ENTER INTO A CONTRACT WITH COVAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't say this enough, my experince was horrible please be carefull with these people.

I haven't had to call in since they went to India, so I don't know now.

DAMN, I wish when I was witrh ELNK they had that for NEW customers. I damn sure would have canceled and reordered as a new customer. 3 YEARS and not one upgrade or the offering of a service beyond 1.5... I have tpo hand it to Cavd tho, the service was stable, except for at the end when I made the decision to leave.
But I moved on to something a little more better in my area, and it's called OOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!

The upgrade speed is 384K, not 128K.
