Not really because Quicktime's streaming format works on Mac and is far, far better than Real or Microsoft's formats. -- Communism never failed, because it never existed... Conservatives = enemies of personal freedom || Liberals = enemies of economic freedom

There are other free players out there that have better quality and play more files that have extended codecs in them- so in short search and you will find better real player falls short.

When the content you want to see is in RealMedia format, you don't have the luxury of choosing to use a different codec.

WM9 is still proprietary, so it's not much of an improvement. A more standardized codec, like MPEG4, would be much nicer.

| Spyware, bloatware, hijacks file associations
I don't think you can repair an image that's as badly tarnished as Real Networks. And Real Alternative is a good substitute. It's just too bad that the majority of the Internet's streaming content is in their format. And after the trouble people had with Real One, how can anyone in their right mind trust the company? Their record on privacy is almost as bad as Doubleclick's, and that says a lot about them, none of it good. And yes, their player still tries to hijack file associations, and though I have never encountered it personally, others have. -- "Kayura or Badamon, whichever you are, you should know that I will never give up this battle. | Never liked Real Player I have never liked RP and its been that way for years. Anytime I get something that uses thier format I don't even bother with it. I am actually impressed with MS's WMV format, its quality has become as good as avi/mpeg in a very short time, I used to hate it but now I'm starting to favor it as one of the better formats for size/quality.

| It it too bad they blew it I rooted for Real for a long time. They pioneered streaming media and I hoped they would be smart enough to profit from it. Instead they annoyed their customers by being greedy and ceded the market to Microsoft. The recent versions of the player are virtually unusable and trying to even find the free player on the Real site is a challenge. Luckily I saved Version 8, which is what I currently use. When it comes to streaming audio I prefer the Real Player to MS media player bound to an IE Window.
They will try to turn around but I fear it is too late. They have so angered their supporter I see no way they can succeed. This problem is not limited to Real I stopped using the latest version of Adobe reader for the same reason. It is sad watching the hubris of Netscape all over again.
Hopefully this will act as a wakeup call to other startups to figure out a way to be profitable without annoying your customers - but that is not really likely.
/Tom
