Tries to repair 'bloated junk' image
(old news - 05:32PM Monday Apr 05 2004)
tags: Video · competition
Real Networks has taken a serious popularity beating over the past year as users complained their player has become ever more bloated and cumbersome. They've lost exclusivity agreements with Major League Baseball and Car Talk, and actually managed to lose a popularity contest when they filed a $1 billion antitrust suit against Microsoft. Apparently company execs have awoken to their popularity slide, and insist they've seen the errors of their ways, most of which they claim are resolved in RealPlayer 10. Car Talk apparently believes them, and have switched back to Real Audio.

Not really because Quicktime's streaming format works on Mac and is far, far better than Real or Microsoft's formats.

Yeah, given a choice, quicktime is my preferred format. But mostly because it can't be easily streamed, so I can download the videos.

Hardly, Microsofts codecs for HD content kick the living crap out of anything Quicktime or Real could hope to produce.

Considering that's only for HD content... Other than that, WMP is a poor format. I know, I've worked with just about all of them for audio and video.

And even then, Quicktime has not released an HD version of the QT codec yet, so you are comparing apples to oranges. When Quicktime's HD codec comes out, it will probably trump WMP.

Not exactly. Did you put in the factor of compression ratios? WMV can deliver a great video/sound stream in a fraction of quicktime's format.

Re: They suck

The compression ratio for WMP is about all that's in its favor... Artifacting, distortion, etc. happen much more with in than with other codecs, excluding Real. Realplayer's codec is probably the worst I've seen when it comes to problems like artifacting and distortion.

When I need to cut down a movie's size, I use WMP format, I rarely notice a quality drop, and it reduces the size by up to (for me) 42%.

What bandwidth settings have you been using?? If you put 1.5 megabit bandwidth for audio/video streaming when encoding, the quality is very very good!
komal

Re: They suck

Yeah, that's what I use. For some reason the supposedly higher quality settings have lower bitrates. But I use the encoding designed for streaming to 1.5 megabit connections, pretty much the highest quality possible with WMV format.

I've worked with several different bandwidth settings. It depends on what was needed and how much bandwidth the server it was going to had...

I don't believe Real Alternative is fully legal to distribute with a product or project..

We ran into a problem where unfortunately Real was the only answer.

Nothing yet is out there that compares with Real's RealPix format for doing slide presentations synchronized with an audio stream.. True; flash may be an answer -- but there are no tools that can be used during encoding and recording that can be simply imported into flash to synchronize slides -- with Real, it reads an SMIL XML file that's very simple to write for.

True; MS is starting with HTML+Time, but support for this is very limited.

So, for a conference with 81 presentations that we had to get online in very short order, we had to stick with Real.

I did not like that; and I don't like forcing people to use RealPlayer since it is/has been so horribly invasive.

We looked at RealAlternative, but I'm not sure about the licensing agreements -- and what liability might be taken on by somebody encouraging its use in a commercial application. The "player" framework for RealAlternative is open source, but it uses Real's codecs.. that's a bit of a problem, I think.

I've avoided installing it since the Windows 95 days when it was supposed to be popular (was it ever?). Now when I see it installed on peoples computers I use I tell them I simply cant stand looking at their stupid Real icons so I uninstall it. They end up telling me they didn't like it bugging them all the time anyway .

Perfect first post by the way. "They suck" is just the right heading.

About time

Actually, I'll believe it when I see it. As far as I'm concerned, "Real" is one of the biggest messes out there. The hooks and pure garbage in the software are inexcusable. I'd rather NOT watch video, than use Real Player.

Don't want it on Web Sites. Don't want it on my machine.

They make Microsoft look competent.

What got me off Real Audio, was a few years ago, I was installing their player and it said something like ‘your audio files are associated with another program, do you want to fix this deficiency’, as though it was somehow my set up that was wrong - how pushy. Oh, and they are BIG supporters of the DNC, so that sealed the deal on me never using them ever again.

why real player when thre better

There so many codecs out there, and real player in my use of there player falls way short - I have downloaded almost all free players out there to watch: movies / slides / music and anything. There are other free players out there that have better quality and play more files that have extended codecs in them- so in short search and you will find better real player falls short.

When the content you want to see is in RealMedia format, you don't have the luxury of choosing to use a different codec.

best thing to do is you and your friends lobby the people that only supply content in real format and demand more widely used codecs (like WM9)

WM9 is still proprietary, so it's not much of an improvement. A more standardized codec, like MPEG4, would be much nicer.

I agree, Real used be an alright codec back in its earlier days in my opinion. But then it sharply hit a slump and became a aweful clunky bloatware .
And as they became greedy, all the other codecs including DivX and some others passed them up and actually ended up giving WAY better video quality and compression (And still do).
Maybe they should have thought more about how to improve instead of thinking they were safe and should waste time with all that filler.
They lost my buisness many years back and I refused to use their format till Windows Media player started supporting it. I have used Real Alternative since its debut and I never plan on looking back at Real Player.
Goes to show you greed causes a successful company to turn to malware infested bloat.

They suck...

Once they dumped their payload of Spyware on my system, I nuked it and never looked back. They're bloated, crappy, and used their position to take advantage of novice users (a la realdownload) for years. If someone only offers an audio stream in "real" format only, I simply don't listen (or go back to the site for that matter).

Spyware, bloatware, hijacks file associations

I don't think you can repair an image that's as badly
tarnished as Real Networks. And Real Alternative is a
good substitute. It's just too bad that the majority of
the Internet's streaming content is in their format. And
after the trouble people had with Real One, how can anyone
in their right mind trust the company? Their record on
privacy is almost as bad as Doubleclick's, and that says
a lot about them, none of it good. And yes, their player
still tries to hijack file associations, and though I have
never encountered it personally, others have.

I am amazed that the developers of this crap think it's actually any good. OMG they are so much in denial.

I mean how can they not see how bloated is the software with all king of unneeded crap and also what's the deal with that Gold membership, I think maybe like only 3 people in the world sign up for that and they must be some kind of relatives of the developers that got an account for free.
Anyway, the quality of their codec is the worst format I have ever seen.

Over the years RealPlayer has gotten a horrid image, they almost sicken me as much as the almost virus like Wild Tangent lol.

Never liked Real Player

I have never liked RP and its been that way for years. Anytime I get something that uses thier format I don't even bother with it. I am actually impressed with MS's WMV format, its quality has become as good as avi/mpeg in a very short time, I used to hate it but now I'm starting to favor it as one of the better formats for size/quality.

I still dislike Real

But I will admit they've at least tried to fix a lot of the irritants. The punch list cited in the article pretty much exactly summed up why I hated Real so much. I installed RP10 just to see, and it is a big step forward compared to 9. I was even able to find the free player on their site without a magnifying glass.

actually, the OS X player is not bad at all.....

it is small, it stays out of your way unless called on, it does not hijack all your file types, and it doesnt have any spy/nagware.

They should be the first company to port their own app FROM Mac back to the PC, they could do a lot worse.

It it too bad they blew it

I rooted for Real for a long time. They pioneered streaming media and I hoped they would be smart enough to profit from it. Instead they annoyed their customers by being greedy and ceded the market to Microsoft. The recent versions of the player are virtually unusable and trying to even find the free player on the Real site is a challenge. Luckily I saved Version 8, which is what I currently use. When it comes to streaming audio I prefer the Real Player to MS media player bound to an IE Window.

They will try to turn around but I fear it is too late. They have so angered their supporter I see no way they can succeed. This problem is not limited to Real – I stopped using the latest version of Adobe reader for the same reason. It is sad watching the hubris of Netscape all over again.

Hopefully this will act as a wakeup call to other startups to figure out a way to be profitable without annoying your customers - but that is not really likely.
