Redmond giant denies Post rumor
(old news - 10:32AM Friday Mar 19 2004)
tags: business
After Time Warner announced they might shed AOL this week, rumors are circulating that Microsoft could leap on the opportunity. The New York Post claims Time Warner execs have met privately with Microsoft about a possible purchase of the black-sheep of the Time Warner family. Time Warner lawyers are also analyzing any possible antitrust violations such a merger would cause, the Post claims. A Microsoft investment in Time Warner Cable is also being considered, the paper indicates. Reuters reports that Time Warner denies any such talks.

MS Gets Netscape

Maybe MS could buy AOL to finally destroy Netscape once and for all. Its somewhat ironic, as AOL bought Netscape primarily to use as a bargaining chip against MS when they wanted placement on the Windows Desktop.

Of course, what the hell is MS thinking about buying this sinking ship, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer can't be as stupid as the TW execs were when they agreed to the AOL buyout!

I wonder if Time-Warner would be willing to dump Netscape into Microsoft's hands for a good sum of cash... Time Warner gets a ROI on the failed takeover from AOL and MS gets rid of competitor at the same time.

True, but they would need to find a way to keep the AOL subscribers from leaving. My first guess would be that they should lower rates to reasonable levels, but that probably won't happen. Of course if they raise rates it will increase the rate of subscriber loss.

I don't think that's a good idea... AOL subscribers are used to AOL software only. Changing them to MSN would be a support (and cost) nightmare. MSN could of course adopt the AOL "look-and-feel" but then we don't get anywhere

Microsoft would not be interested in Netscape. Netscape has already been destroyed by AOL. Last year, they discountued the Netscape browser, version 7.1 was the final version. The developers have all moved on. Netscape is no longer a browser company, AOL turned it into a web portal and discount ISP.
Mozilla is a seperate organization. It's a completly independent, open source organization. Whatever happens, Mozilla will still be around.

Well to be honest AOL is far from being a sinking ship. It may be taking on a little water right now but its not about to die.

But of course that if this statement from CNN is true, and I tend to believe it is.

"But the unit has continued to produce profits though, posting operating income of $663 million and earnings before depreciation and amortization of $1.5 billion in 2003. Its revenue of $8.6 billion, while off 5 percent from 2002 levels, was the second largest contributor to company revenues after its filmed entertainment unit, which had a record year"

This would kill aol messenger, ICQ, and netscape,... on the plus side - we wouldn't be getting any more CDs in the mail (i hope).

Highly Unlikely

Microsoft although would love to see its main competitor for dialup ISPs go away, Microsoft is not at all interested in the dial-up business.

An article was published last year that stated that MS was moving away from dialup and concentrating more on providing content for the connection providers. Thus, MS's move to partner with Verizon, Quest and others.

MS is a software company and thats all they are interested in. However, the purchase of AOL brings up a lot more possibilities for them.

Guess we just have to wait and see. I'm a big MS fan and love my MSN but I'd hate to see the two combined. All of my friends and family are AOL users and they hate that they have to carry MSN messenger to get to me but thats exactly why I left AOL. The instant you sign on people are freakin buggin ya.

Re: Highly Unlikely

I agree, this is higly unlikely. AOL isn't the competitor to MSN that it once was. And the two systems are so vastly different, that any attempt to merge them would easily take years to complete. Besides, paid subscriptions at AOL have been steadily falling for a couple years now.

All the better to lead the Noobs by the hand with.

OK let me get this straight Microsoft may buy AOL? And folks already thought the Bundling wasn't bad enough? Now Microsoft will have an ISP (of sorts). All the easier to hold all the newbies and noobs hands, and guide them into the wonderful world of computers and the internet.

From their first operating system. To their first browser and email client. To their fist internet account AOL dialup. Then to Broadband, more than likely one of these "lite" (CRAP) packages that is so popular among Broadband marketers right now. Oh yeah they'll provide the content. Buying another computer no problem just buy a Microsoft Router.

Arggggggggggggggggh where does it end?........... Oh wait It Doesn't! In short they'd lead so many of their costumers along by the hand or maybe its like a dog on a leash. And have them believing that they couldn't do any of it without Microsoft. Can you say Cash Cow? Dear God I think I'm going to be sick!

MSN is microsoft's ISP. I don't see the terrible microsoft gaining any extra foothold in the internet race by buying AOL. They'll just get the dialup subscribers. I think the biggest issue for most people would be what would happen to AIM

AOL & Apple partnership with iTunes

This rumor seems very unlikely because of the partnership between AOL and Apple with the iTunes Music Store they are building into the AOL software. Surely if MS bought AOL there would be no more deal with Apple.

Right...but what difference would that make? There are 2 ways this could go. Either the contract is held, or it's ended. I don't think this contract alone is enough to detour AOL from selling to MS, or MS from buying AOL. If TW is in fact looking to sell, they've most likely thought about this. Besides, I'm sure there are other contracts/partnerships TW-AOL has that hold bearing over this small one with Apple.

This would spell the death of Mozilla . . .

There is NO way Micro$oft would allow continued development of Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird and Camino. They compete directly with MS IE & Outlook.

. . . and another app I have grown to love . . . Winamp, which would fall by the wayside as Micro$oft touts it's Windows Media Player bloatware.

If MS were to purchase AOL, they would still have no power over Mozilla. Mozilla is completly seperate and AOL has no power over them. They are able to use Gecko with their softwhare since it's open source. They already use Gecko for the AOL mac version and the compuserve client.

AOL plus Microsoft ... could be a plus for users

I see good times for users if this happens. The end user
will get on-line access cheaper. MSN and AOL dial-up will
drop its prices and add more content. Also, both companies
have there own broadband solutions. The combined resources
of AOL & MSN broadband services will force cable providers
to drop the rates and even increase bandwidth to keep its
customers. AOL has its good points and bad, so does MSN.

If you look at Microsofts track record on products. The
Xbox is doing good. It has its fingers in PC hardware,DVD
solutions,PC gaming and music. The flagship OS, WinXP
will be releasing SP2 with major inprovements.

I hope its TRUE ... I only see good things happening ...

Re: AOL plus Microsoft ... could be a plus for users

HEY ....

I'm not a noobie ... I admitt AOL and Microsoft aren't
perfect companies. What I'm saying is dial-up will be here
for another 10 or 15 years. AOL still has the largest
amount of users using dial-up. In the coming years those
dial-up users will most likely go to DSL. DSL has been
around for a few years now. The DSL we have now is going
to change in 3 or 5 years. The issues with distance from
the co to the user will be tripled.

New tech costs money $$$$ companies like Microsoft,
Cisco and juniper will spend the money to develop new
products and update present products.

In my opinion AOL is going to be its own company
again by the end of this year. TW is losing too much
money if they keep it. Microsoft might buyout AOL, but
most likely the DOJ will stop it. Only time will tell ...

Would Seem Odd

That would seem strange, if AOL lost the TimeWarner content I don't think it would be nearly as good. Plus I think they have a great email service and spam service, I wouldn't want to go back to Outlook. AOL does over 1 billion in revenue a year, I think there is definitely value there for MS but I'm just not sure if the consumers would be happy or not.
