RSS & Bit Torrent
Content distribution gets interesting
(old news - 05:24PM Friday Mar 12 2004)
tags: Fileswapping · alternatives · bandwidth · software
RSS is changing the way people get their news, but it's also having an interesting impact on broadband content delivery as well. We mentioned recently how Lindows is distributing their product via a modified version of BitTorrent, but the possibilities inherent in using RSS and BitTorrent together have been exciting many bloggers for the past three months.

While RSS is a simple concept for syndicating content on the web, its primary use now is to keep tabs on news-sources and blogs. By keeping track of changes to an RSS file, you're kept up to date concerning updated content via your delivery method of choice. BitTorrent, which we've often talked about, is an efficient peer to peer method of exchanging files between broadband users. The distribution method it uses is explained at the Bit Torrent website.

Many bloggers are thinking of combining these two technologies in order to create the perfect content delivery system. Since a Steve Gilmour column for Ziff-Davis last December, the discussion has spread like a virus among many bloggers (Techdirt, Ernest Miller, and even ex-Tech TV host Chris Pirillo, for example). However it's Scott Raymond whose entry best explains what has everyone excited:

"I want RSS feeds of BitTorrent files. A script would periodically check the feed for new items, and use them to start the download. Then, I could find a trusted publisher of an Alias RSS feed, and “subscribe” to all new episodes of the show, which would then start downloading automatically — like the “season pass” feature of the TiVo."

While illegal ideas abound, such as the instant download of every South Park episode the second it hits the net, the idea lends itself to a great number of ideas that could turn traditional distribution models on their heads, giving smaller operations a new opportunity for content distribution. Like in Lindows case, the system leans on the benefits of BitTorrent, where expenses are virtually non-existent; each downloader of a file shares a portion of the distribution cost.

RSS feeds layered on top keep track of the content, and because BitTorrent does cryptographic hashing of all data, subscribers to the feed can be sure they're getting what they think they're getting, whether that winds up being the latest Sopranos episode, or the latest Sveasoft firmware upgrade.

Despite ample discussion, one of the first practical applications of this idea has only surfaced this month. Programmer Andrew Grumet has announced the release of a beta version of an RSS+BitTorrent integration tool for Radio Userland's news aggregator, available (with additional detail) here.

Nice.

It's cool to see new technologies like this being used together. What I find nice is that with more people just downloading and uploading the torrents at once, the general speeds of the torrents in such an automated system would probably be faster than ones found on random websites. At least in theory.

Re: Nice.

Won't Isp's in their desire to block p2p ports block some legit torrent-mod use... if it's all encryted how are they to tell which one's legit... this could be interesting if it goes into mainstream usage...

With most bittorrent clients you can change the ports it uses.

That's why it says "ex-host" ... Anyway, yeah I seen Chris's blog the same day he wrote about the RSS and bit-torrent.

New method of choice....

Torrents are now almost my exclusive method of file transfer. I like the idea of everyone sharing their bandwidth.

It's hard to donate to every project I feel is worthy so by my allowing twice the upload total as the download total of the torrent before I close it out, I feel like I am giving something back.

BT is my 'last choice' due to its S L O W download speed. if theres something i want and cant get it off news server or IRC and i still want it bad enough i'll do the BT thing but only as last resort.

I've found that my BT transfers go way up if I forward port 6881 from my router to the BT'ing PC. Also, they tend to start out slow, and speed up as the transfer progresses.

Your download speed with BT is directly related to your upload speed. If your upload speed is limited to 0 or some other low number your download speed will suck as well.

I think that nicely explains why BT doesn't even work over my satellite "broadband" connection.

Re: New method of choice....

Another thing that is an speed killer is *NAT* (firewall/routers). Without port forewording turned on, your bandwidth goes down the drain. Mainly because, most people are behind NAT's and thus, can only connect out (not receive connections in). So, the people with an "real" ip (or port-forewording through their firewall) receive that extra bandwidth because they can receive incoming connections.

I like bittorrent

it is good for large/popular files, kazaa is good for more obscure, or small files. irc? I got tired of typing in so many commands just to download a single file to find i'd be sitting in a que.

good for updates?

What I do now is rsync all the stuff in a directory and below on GA Tech for RHL9 update RPMs. This sounds like the perfect mating of technologies for a task like this...lots of files, some of them sizeable (X11 and kernel sources for examples are typically quite big), lists of files that change occasionally. Thoughts?

Should this sort of idea maybe be incorporated into yum (the update doodad for FC)? Good idea to maintain up-to-date distributions (e.g., you have all your FC RPMs in a directory, NFS exported and ready for doing installations, but if there's an RPM released for a Mutt update, the old Mutt RPM gets deleted and replaced with the newer one)?

Bit Torrent Sucks

I can't stand Bit Torrent. It will connect to endless amounts of peers... but my d/l sucks! I can easily pull 400 KB/s off of OOL's FTP server but BT never gets above 50 KB/s tops... and that's if I'm extremely lucky. Most of the time it's 10 KB/s or less. Talk about a P.O.S. file sharing program.

FTP can be nice if you find a good server but Bittorrent is greatly gaining popularity...

BT REALLY SUCKS

@swbell.ne

BT is dying

Maybe that was then, this is now, but I can't find s&*% from any site I would want to use BT for. With all of these idiots getting busted (IP for all to see) and all the BT links trying to drop BS on my machine, I don't see any reason to start opening ports when it all seems such a hassle. News Groups? IRC? Not for me! I have enough to subscribe to. BT won't last. Fasttrack is dying, but I've yet to find anything as satisfactory as k++. I guess I'll stick with that. I'm only replying to this because I've been searching for torrents for the past week and after much disappoinment and many hours of reading in forums I've decided -BT clients are not welcome on my machine.

BT IS ONLY GETTING B

@wi.ch

Ya right queer

BT is not dying... sites are showing up everywhere... and u can find anything and everything on BT for example »romcity.gamewonderz.net has a bunch of movies ROMs Music Albums and this guy does all the updates himself... i mean if someone wants to pirate something to use for a website they just use BT and it is harder to shut down

Its good but it is s l o w

all u losers who were saying its dead and stuff are obviously nuts, but far out i'd love someone to speed it up for me. I use winMx and get 20k/s but on bit torrent it's like >10 and most times it's going at like 1 or two while my uploads are going 7-8. wats up with that?

Good advice, but may not work. Many ISPs (mine included) are shaping traffic and closing ports to prevent BT from working. My ISP also managed to stop winmx from working. Changing the ports worked for about a week, then they figured that out too. Unfortunately, they killed nearly everything (VoIP, all my games, etc.) that wasn't web or email. Good thing I'm paying $60/month for this "broadband"

I'd be happy to pay for my usage, but they don't tell you what their limits are and don't offer an option either. In fact, they deny they're doing anything, but they are. Yours probably is too.

My Idea

I think bit torrent is good, but there should be a way to control distribution, the whole system (Bit torrent for pro. networks) often requires a devoted server to function. I think the bit torrent concept would be good to apply to pieces of data and the whole internet. There are maybe even as much as 12 people viewing this post and maybe as much as 1000 people viewing the single add. This add could be sent much faster if somebody who is on a computer next to you uploads the add to your computer. Now an add is not the perfect example but take an 10,000 kilobyte video then this makes sense, or even a page over 1 megs.

This idea is plausible only when internet speeds are faster and the binary that is used to communicate with the server to request things is shortened. 56k means you have only about 20k...

I believe the bit-torrent idea will be the corner stone of a distant future computer system, in which all computers are hooked up to a terminal server and do not have to be faster than 3 gigahertz. Then the files that need to be downloaded can be shared together.
------------------------------------------------------------
On another note, port forwarding is a very poor choice, it neglects the firewall. The speed of your firewall have a lot to do with the brand. Anyway you don't want to be caught for making your 17k download go 20 k.

eXeem

@pipex.com

eXeem?

I've Been using eXeem fo' a while, it seem alright, a few bugs, (Quite a few), But i do seem to get faster Responses and Less Timeouts, But the Transfer Speed seems extremely Limited, (Maybe cuz i have 256 Up?, or the stuff im getting.... no seeders [Damn Leeches!] also 1 meg down)... Lots of people r having trouble using the 0.27 patch, ive got the 0.26 patch and im happy (Cropped filenames but nvm, just one letter missing off the extension)... You can also Search for new Files, And Old (Althought doesn't seem to pick much up for me?)

All in all my Personal Experience would be a 5/10

Room For Improvement?
Yes, Just Fix the 0.27 patch, realease a 0.28, and Widen the search....

I Believe people r passing by eXeem thinking its just another torrent Downloader Prog. It Is, But its by the Original Suprnova.org (The free one!).

I Reckon eXeem needs a bit more people to download and try it, it really does work!

the future "file sharing"

torrent - an overwhelming number or amount; "a flood of requests"; "a torrent of abuse"

File sharing -the public or private sharing of computer data or space in a network with various levels of access privilege

peer-to-peer -From user to user. Peer-to-peer implies that either side can initiate a session and has equal responsibility

pi·ra·cy (pī'rə-sē) -The unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material:

Well hello everyone,

I stumbled onto the bittorrent world only a few weeks ago, and before that it was the limewire/kazza/p2p world for me.

One big question that I keep asking myself is when will ENUFF BE ENOUGH...

Let me explain:

I can find literally anything AND I MEAN ANYTHING on these torrent sites, and the alarming thing is that its all free, I mean really lets think about this (those of you who are on a mindset wont listen to me anyway so move along) if EVERYTHING that we once bought with our money is now "free" then where does that leave us.

Now before I become a hated person let me explain something, I firmly believe that paying close to 30 bucks for a CD is too much, I’m not in the recording business (although I was in the broadcast business for 10 years) so I cant quote the exact costs, but I can say that I fully agree that file sharing is a great thing, especially music, but IN MODERATION PEOPLE.

I was in wal-mart the other day in the music section which is very vacant nowadays, and I overheard a young woman tell her mom not to buy the CD because "she could get it free online", the mother asked her if that would be stealing, the "daughter" paused and gave her mom a strange look, and her mom said that she would buy the CD because she wanted the cover art, lyrics that sort of thing and the daughter just smiled and said that "she could get all of that too". The mother finally purchased the CD citing that she liked the artist and wanted to support their work and I could have kissed that woman, I mean ladies and gentleman this is A WAKE UP CALL here.

Are you really going to raise your kids and download all their cartoons, and video games, and teach them that this is the RIGHT WAY TO DO THINGS, if you are I just wanted to say leave your keys in your car tonight, I’m going to take it on a long trip and I might bring it back, but if I do I wont replace the gas. Your probably asking me what gives me the right, well its real simple, I don’t want to pay for it and I think it should be free so that makes it ok for me to do it.

The truth is that there will always be those people who download everything in sight just to do so, and we really cant blame the fact that their mom dropped them to many times, or they had a bad childhood (heck most of them are still kids) on their rampant ILLEGAL AND IMMORAL downloading, but the sad stories are the people who used to go out and purchase that software with the money they earned, and now they download it for free, find a hack or crack or whatever, not because they have to, but because they CAN.

Those are the real scary people out there, the ones who know better yet continue to break the law, and YEAH I KNOW I SAID THE LAW, piracy and copyright infringement are ILLEGAL.

Before I go any further I just want to state THAT I ALSO USE FILE SHARING, so I’m not a saint in anyway, but I will say this much, if the day comes when companies shut their doors because of the fact that people steal rather then buy their products I will be deeply saddened.

Here’s one thing I love about the bittorrent idea, its distributed sharing and transfers, instead of that one guy who has this new game or cd and a high speed connection and 50 bloodsucking greedy 56k people downloading with no intention of ever sharing it once they get it (you can tell I am not a big fan of what p2p has become) here is this great forum where all these people who have this file can upload and download it to each other. Even though most are forced, the limitation of MANDATORY UPLOADING AND DOWNLOADING is a great thing, because now all can share fairly and no one is hogging the files. As far as seeders yeah, once some people (OK MOST) get the file they switch off their client faster then you can blink, run into a room and drool over their new file, without ever giving a thought to others who would have a better speed if they seeded it to them, and they make up excuses, my bandwidth doesn’t do well, I had to go pick up groceries, my mom needed the computer, most of it are simple lies from greedy bastards who don’t understand what "sharing" means.

There are thousands of websites of torrents and lists, some even charge to get them, but that’s a whole notha ball of wax.

So you’re saying if I have all this information on bittorrent, why do I have such a problem with all these people sharing these files.

It’s real simple

NONE OF YOU HAVE ANY RIGHT WHATSOEVER TO HAVE THAT FILE, (with the exception or the REAL owner) NONE OF YOU PAID FOR THAT FILE OR HAVE ANY RIGHTS TO ITS CONTENTS.

Some comments in a crowd outside a theatre

" I heard this movie is so cool, my friend saw it before it was released, he got it off the net"

" This movie better be gorier then the first one, I watched that on a pirated copy on his DVD at home"

Comments outside a music store

"Why would I pay for that when I could download it for free”?

"Oh he wont buy that, he can get it for free other ways"

Comments in a software kiosk

" Don’t waste your money, I cracked that program and it wasn’t any good"

" I think that demo needs an activation key, but there are ways around that you know"

I could go on and on and on forever by saying these things, and the truth is if your reading this most of you probably have said those things already.
No I cant stop file sharing, and I wouldn’t want to, because I believe it is a great way for artists to expose their new music (commercial radio wont do it, that’s almost as corrupt as this whole piracy thing) and yes it is also a great place to share LEGAL FILES, a quick side note for everyone who is reading this still,

EVERYONE BITCHES ABOUT SPEED and download problems, here’s an interesting tidbit, I went to a website called legaltorrents.com, and just too show that I’m not giving a rigged example, the torrent I downloaded off that site was opened in bittornado, a free application, does anyone want to guess what I got for download speed on a 95 mb jazz cd with 6 seeds and 4 peers.....

1kb?

12kb?

20kb?

50kb?

I started at 590kb (regular comcrap connection) and stayed around that area for the 3 minutes it took to get the file.

So why is it that I can wait four hours for a cd that was "ripped" as everyone likes to put it, and only 3 minutes for the artist demo on legaltorrents.
Same client was used so no bias there, and it wasn’t a speed advantage on this test, so what was it.

Here’s the secret for all of you who are salivating to know the answer...

56K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Studies show that even in this advanced age we live in that the united states is only 20% broadband capable, so the MAJORITY of people who are using these wonderful bittorrent and P2P are still DIALING IN, and their speeds will be unforgiving and slow forever.
Now that isn’t to say that all of the blame rests on that, there could be other circumstances at work here, but the point has been made.

I have no problem with people using the services with a dial up connection, but lets look at this for a moment,

Lets say you just found 20 people who have this game that you just GOT TO HAVE, but are too damn cheap to buy it, so you get in a queue and their are already 30 people waiting for it, now lets say your download is 300 mb and your rate on your super duper cable modem is supposed to be screaming yet your only getting 5k on the rate, well the person serving that file to you only took 3 minutes (60X cd rom) to load their game and share it, yet its going to take you 5 hours to download it form them.

56kster anyone (an insanely good idea) A new sharing place just for dial up users)

But I digress in all I have said, I talk like file sharing is here to stay, but this is the part I hate most, raining on the pirates parade,

I am a network technology’s professional, I have a degree in information technologies, and I hold my MCP, MCSA, MCSE (for those of you who know what that means then you know that that’s a level of expertise way above the wannabes out there) and I am working on a remarkable little piece of software with the help of some other talented people.

But first.... another example

Lets say you were transporting illegal drugs for your friend in your brand new Mercedes, and for some unlucky reason you got caught, that car that you loved is impounded and you wont get it back, and if you cry to the judge that the car had nothing to do with it, he will tell you that you were committing an illegal act and the car was just a casualty of war so to speak, so even if the police busted that car up you wouldn’t have a pot to piss in as far as legal standpoints go, and another example is the boys that sneak into the quarry late at night for a swim, they know that the place is off limits and no trespassing is allowed yet they go in there anyway. One of the boys dies in the quarry that night and the parents sue the mining company; the judge tosses the suit out because the boys were trespassing and if they hadn’t been where they didn’t belong then they wouldn’t have been in any danger.

I know this is all very longwinded but I am coming to a point soon I promise you.

Part of being a member of the IT community is bearing the burden of the knowledge that we possess, and the RESPONSIBILTY to make sure that knowledge is put to good use.

(The future..... sooner then you can imagine)

Joe comes home from school, he just heard this kick butt tune on the radio, he wants the whole cd but is short on dough, no problem he says as he fires up his desktop and loads his favorite file sharing application "ill just download the cd for free". Joe notices that during the night Microsoft applied a small update to his pc, he goes to his file sharing application and quickly starts downloading music files he wants to add to his collection.
While downloading these files Joe notices that his pc is making a lot of hard drive activity, so he opens up his task manager, everything looks ok so he shrugs it off and goes to do his homework. One hour later Joe sits down and goes to his download folder to listen to his "pirated" jams, he is somewhat concerned when he sees that the files aren’t there.
No big deal, he just opens up the search utility in windows and searches for all mp3 files.

0 FOUND!!!!!!

That’s impossible, Joe had over 30,000 songs he downloaded on to his pc, where did they all go!!!!!!!

Joe searches franticly but to no avail, there isn’t a single mp3 left on his hard drive, and his family swears they didn’t touch his computer.

What happened to Joe’s songs?????

Marissa is in college and she just found out that she needs this software for an upcoming course, she has the cash but doesn’t want to spend it on the program because she wants to buy that new dress that Billy likes so much, so she fires up the ol desktop pc to see if she can get it offline.
She notices that her school and the ISP sent her an email saying that file sharing was illegal, and a new policy was in effect at this time, and that their was a zero tolerance policy for violators, she just closes the mail and laughs, what could they possibly do to her.
She finds the program on the app she likes best and starts thinking about that new dress and Billy......
Suddenly Marissa hears a high pitched whirring sound and it gets louder and louder, she jumps back just as a loud screeching noise erupts from under her desk, and tendrils of smoke appear.

Her screen has frozen and she decides to reboot, and when she reaches down to turn off the pc, she pulls her hand back from the hot button,
She calls a local pc tech service to rush out to fix her pc, the technician works on the pc for an hour before giving her the strange unsettling news.
Her pc power supply shorted out for some reason, sent the wrong voltage (to much) to her hard drive and caused it to spin so fast that it melted the platters together.
The technician is sorry he has never seen anything like it, what could cause such a thing??????

The truth is everyone, that the masses are right FILE SHARING CANT BE STOPPED, does anyone know why, its called ethics.
People who illegally download all this software/videos/music whatever have none, but the ISP and the companies they steal from have to.
They can’t go out and blow up your pc or arrest you so they try to build ways to stop it, and as we know that doesn’t work.

But we are on the cutting edge, this little program that is being developed will be given to EVERY MAJOR ISP and as you all must know distribution will be AMAZINGLY FAST, the program will be given free of charge and no questions asked, all that will be said to those who receive it, ITS TIME TO FIGHT BACK.

In the world of your ISP they don’t want to lose money by losing you as a customer, but this whole thing is way out of control, people get mad at their isp for shaping or limiting their speeds in this sort of thing, well it wouldn’t be a problem if you weren’t there to begin with.
Also in the world of IT people are trying to fight back anyway they can to stop this from spreading, and the truth is they are losing the battle, but don’t be surprised if more then a few heads are turning the other way when this thing surfaces, most people will claim complete ignorance and will deny knowing how it got onto their servers.

File sharing will be stopped in the future, AT LEAST ILLEGAL file sharing anyways, but instead of arresting people and dragging them through costly drawn out courts where they can cry about their "rights" (the truth is you have the RIGHT to buy the software legally) its going to be a whole new fight, and I can hear it know,

You cant stop me ill block my ports
I’m good at this; ill beat you with this PROG such and such
Your full of it this isn’t right or legal (I NEVER SAID IT WAS)

REMEMBER PEOPLE, your ISP already has access to your pc, and if you cut that off, then you solved the problem anyways.

I am sure when someone loses an ISP due to banning or overuse, it cost them a few dollars, but imagine what will happen when they end up losing a $2000+ computer system to this new defender,

Do you suppose they will just go out and download a new PC?

The future is coming, and it will be a whole new ballgame

(Authors note: I myself will cease ANY FILE SHARING when this program is released into the mainstream, it will not be readily identifiable and therefore could be downloaded by ANYONE, including myself, and there will be no WORKAROUNDS to this, because the people who built and compiled it have sworn not to write any)

Let freedom ring (in our hearts, not in the fact we steal everything we can)

Re: the future "file sharing"

Between this and your vague references to some "software" you were writing, one might easily assume you were part of the Gobbles group:

Incidentally, if your ISP requires us to use their software to connect through them to the internet, they suck. If they don't, but you think we have to anyway, YOU suck. The OS' built-in networking capabilities have been able to handle this for a long time (well, some operating systems anyway). Giving the ISP any access to your computer is not necessary when receiving internet service from them, as someone with the certifications you claim should have learned by now.

Re: the future "file sharing"

man waht part of STUPID PEOPLE DONT REPLY was misunderstood

Anyway, the ISP isnt going to require that u use this software, you the user wont even know it exists, and furthermore if your not installing any p2p applications on your machine you have nothing to worry about.

as far as belonging to a certain faction or group, no i am just one of many that wants to see "pseudo-americans" stop abusing their rights and start purchasing the software or whatever illegally.

bye for now

PS WHEN ITS ALL OVER MY NAME WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR A LONG TIME, but ths isnt a quest for fame, its to make things right again.
