Customers lose in Viacom Echostar spat
(old news - 12:28PM Tuesday Mar 09 2004)
tags: satellite · business
Even if you're not a Dish Network subscriber, you've probably been noticing the messages flitting across your screen on certain Viacom owned channels the past several days. They're part of a spat between Viacom and Echostar that has resulted in many users losing not only MTV, but the complete line of Viacom channels, including CBS.

As users in our TV&Satellite forum discuss, a rate spat between the two media giants has resorted in Echostar taking some drastic measures to make their point. Echostar claims Viacom was looking for rate increases up to 40% during negotiations. Some 1.6 million subscribers currently cannot have their MTV. Google News has more.

Good thing I didn't get Dish yet

Been thinking of getting Dish network. The lose of MTV is no big thing but the others may make me put off my choice longer.

This is amazing, what kind of B.S. is this, we have DirecTV and saw the message scroll on number of channels, MTV, BET, etc. I think this is something that Dish will regret, people will drop them like a bad habit and they should. This is pure B.S.

Consider this. The contract that your provider, DirectTV has with Viacom will come up for negotiation next year. Based soley upon your attitude I hope Viacom hits DirectTV with a HUGE rate increase and that DirectTV passes it on to you.

Me, I will stand by Dish. They are fighting to keep my rates low. Nothing wrong with that.

Re: Good thing I didn't get Dish yet

If I remember correctly this did happen with Comcast a few years back but it was with Disney. Ecostar is doing the right thing. Everytime we complain because cable companies are raising rates its because companies like Viacom try to force cable and satellite companies to carry stations they don't want to carry.

Additionally, everytime some major league athelete or popstar gets some outrageous contract with millions, the owner of that contract passes on the cost to cable and satellite companies who ultimately pass it onto customers.

Ecostar/DirectTV or whoever they are is doing the right thing.

It's not Charlies standing up for what he thinks is right that irritates me.........its Charlies throwing me a $1 month credit on my $60 a month bill that does!

Our family has lost some of its most watched channels and $1 is nothing but an insult!

Now if I understand this correctly Viacom originally wanted to raise the rate by 6%. Now Charlie is not giving me these channels anymore therefore crediting me $1 a month!
(Must be what he is paying for the Viacom Channels because that is what he is crediting me for not having them)

Now 6% of $1 is 6 cents, now just two months ago Charlie raised my monthly rate by $3 a month! Now that would amount to only 2% of Charlies last monthly increase!

I am sorry but I am having a hard time understanding the numbers of logic here??

Dish network charges $45 a month for 180 channels. That's about $0.25 per channel....so IMO, they should be giving us about $2 off the bill each month (and free premium channels for a couple months would be a nice bonus )

A one dollar refund is not chump change when you multiply that by the number of customers. That's almost ten million dollars for 36 hours of lost programming! Give your kids a ball and throw them outside. It wasn't even two full days.

"A one dollar refund is not chump change when you multiply that by the number of customers. That's almost ten million dollars for 36 hours of lost programming!"

Charlie, is that you posting in this forum? One dollar IS an insult. I'd rather them give $10 million to one lucky DISH viewer than insult me with a buck. Then he has the audacity to come on "Charlie Chat" and say we've had customers say "Forget the Viacom Channels, I'm going to pocket this dollar!" like he'd won the lottery. Let me put this way, if my own Grandmother gave me a dollar these days for my birthday, I'd tell her -like I'm telling Charlie now- keep the dollar and go buy yourself some dignity.

All I want to know is who pulled the plug? Viacom says Dish Network pulled it's channels and Dish Network says Viacom legally prevented them from airing the channels. So which is it? If it's Dish, I'm definitely changing carriers. If it's viacom, I don't know what I'll do -they got me by the cahoonies 'cause they're mainly all we watch.

PS. Don't shed a tear for Dish ...They're not fighting for the little guy -They're fighting to line their pockets. They're already about $10 higher monthly than Direct TV which is why I'm probably going to switch carriers regardless of who pulled the channels.

I don't know if Viacom encrypts their signals when they're sent out and then "authorized" broadcasters unlock them with their key... Even if they were not encrypted, Viacom and Dish have, or had, a contract and if it's no longer in place, Dish isn't allowed to re-transmit the signal.

I don't know why it's an issue unless you want to use it as an excuse to cancel. If Dish "pulled the plug" it's because they had to. Your PS explains your logic anyway... By the way, let us know how/where Dish is $10 higher than DTV.

DISH: Digital Home plan with AT100, 2 Receivers (The second with not all the features as the first),+ Locals = 49.98 standard.

Direct TV: 3 Receivers, Same channels, + Locals = 39.99 Standard.

This is in Raleigh, NC.

Re: Good thing I didn't get Dish yet

Where'd you get those prices ??

Dish's Digital Home Advantage: (3) TVs, Top 120 package w/ locals = $44.99/month + $5.00 for 2nd receiver (receiver # 1 will be a dual-tuner). Total = $49.99
www.dishnetwork.com/images/getdi···rice.gif, »www.dishnetwork.com/content/getd···ex.shtml (fine print at bottom of page))

DirecTV: (3) TVs, Total Choice ("over 130 channels") w/ locals = $39.99/month + "$4.99/mo. for separate programming on second and each additional TV". Total = $49.97
www.directv.com/DTVAPP/NewHardwa···n&VID=DS)

Whoops, you're right, DTV is cheaper...

Average_Joe

@mindspring.com

Re: Good thing I didn't get Dish yet

I got those prices from A)my DISH network bill and posted it verbatim as it is described in writing on the back of the bill. B)For Direct TV I have what you have -but not the $4.99 per each additional TV. Hence, for the same money, I'll come out ahead 1 receiver with programming ...Unless there's more fine print I'm missing.

PS. You answered my question which I posted in earnest: According to your info it was VIACOM who "pulled the plug" and if I had a way to stick it to them, I certainly would. Both companies are in the wrong however, because in no other business would the customers be involved in such a manner. Just bad business all around.

At least somebody has the guts to stand up to the likes of Viacom and their ilk. Dish Network has been extremely fair to its customer base with regards to prices over the last few years. This falls more on the hands of Viacom's insatiable greed rather than Dish Network's resistance to be extorted.

I hope Dish Network refuses to let Viacom back, ever. If they did this, I swear that I would start an account with Dish Networks for their basic package, even though my apartment faces northward and I would never be able to get a signal. Seriously. Go Dish Networks!

While I tend to agree, is anyone else wondering why Showtime and The Movie Channel haven't come into play in this little spat? While these premium channels are likely under a separate contract, both are owned by Viacom.

The channels in dispute are more or less "freebies" I think... Dish, DirecTV, and most cable companies offer channels like Nickleodean, Comedy Central, and the others affected by this in their "standard" (not cable's most basic, required) package.

Has nothing to do with tiers or packaging. It simply has to do with which channels were up for renewal. For example, TV Land and Spike TV are similar Viacom channels, but they didn't go dark because the contract didn't run out on them.

You can put off your choice now. But you have to remember that this might happen again with another supplier such as Comcast, DirectTV, Cox, and so on.

I think everyone is waiting for the court decision. If it goes in favor of DISH, then consumers win. If it goes Viacom's way, then be ready for the battles.

I hope DISH stays firm.

I agree and as I mentioned in this post, »CBS takes offensive against Dish Network/EchoStar, it's just Dish Network's turn currently... It will be DirecTV's turn someday as well as different cable companies soon too.

Part of the reason I was going to go to dish is to save money. One of the channels I really wanted to get was TV Land. I could care less about most of the other Viacom channels. If they move some of the channels up a tier or lower their prices I might get them anyway. I am tired of the media conglomerates making underwater basket weaving channels and using their power to force them on cable and satellite providers.

TVLand is not effected (so far). As of 1:55pm Tues it's up and running on my Dish sub.

As far as these Viacom channels being "freebies", to be honest the content has become so lousy that they should be paying me to have them on my sub. Good to see Dish stand up to them. Their doing what I pay them to do.

Some tech companies did manage to push ahead. Shares of EchoStar Communications added 77 cents, or 2.3%, to $34.95 on Nasdaq. The satellite- television company removed Viacom-owned channels from its Dish Network system in 16 markets in response to a dispute over programming fees. Viacom channels include CBS affiliates, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon. Class A shares of Viacom dropped 40 cents, or 1%, to $39.18 on the Big Board.

I think I read somewhere that Dish raised their prices by $3 sometime over this past year. CBS/Viacom wanted 6 pennies of that $3 and Dish said no. I don't think giving them 6 pennies would have raised the rates to the customer. I don't have a dish and never will, but its just my two cents, now someone just needs 4 more and they can get back their missing channels.

If it was just 6 cents per subscriber don't you think Charlie would have signed the contract. Or do you think that Charlie would reimburse the subscribers $1 or $2 that have local CBS and the other Viacom channels? I for one don't see that. Channels were pulled from 15 or 16 markets. Now why is it that CBS is still broadcasting in about 90 other markets. Because, Viacom wants more money than what it is costing for the other 90 Markets.

Re: Good thing I didn't get Dish yet

Channels were pulled from *every* market, not 15 or 16. Those channels are the MTV, Nick, Comedy Central, and so on. The "15 or 16" markets affected have the local CBS station also owned by Viacom (Viacom owns "CBS TV", i.e. the network, local stations are like franchises in that they have the same 'name', but it's name only). The CBS station in my town is owned by Cox Communications and it's still being broadcast.

Personally my problem with good old Charlie is that he feels that these channels are not "important" enough as per his own words via a Charlie Chat. For those of us that have children, we know that while Nickelodeon may not be "important" to him...it is one of the few channels that will keep our kids interests.

When did he decided was was important for my family?

I recomend everyone purchase directv with tivo. The tivo unit is only $99 and the dual tuners, which allow you to watch one channel while another records or record two programs at once, are great. I currently receive the premium package, all channels, for $85 (They give me $20 off a month). When you are a subscriber for at least six months you can receive great deals.

The reason most people are going to dish to save money. What you are suggesting would raise my rates. I know tivo's are great and all but I don't watch that much TV to justify owning one and most movie channels show movies I have no interest in.

If Viacom is charging Echostar a whole lot more than what Disney, GE/NBC, and Turner do, then Viacom is in the wrong. IF that is not the case, then Dish Net may have some "xplainin'" to do.

In any case, Dish Net customers are "likely" TV viewers. After all, they did pay for it. Not everyone who owns a TV watches it. Cable and dish customers definitely will! Advertisers know this. Not a good year so far for Viacom. NFL ditches MTV as their Super Bowl entertainment cooordinator, Martha Stewart, & now this move by Dish Network.

Other than CSI, what else does CBS has to offer? MTV stinks and spongebob is decaying kids minds worse than Elmo. New South Park episodes are harder to find than Saddam was. What are we really missing with Viacom shows anyways?

By the way, I got a friend who has had a dish since the mid 80s. It's the old giant type, not the mini-dishes that are out now. Anyways he picks up everything. Gotta talk to that fella

Still upset over the PVR to DVR rip off fee.

People talk about a $3 per month increase?

They still haven't figured out that the DVR systems are based on a $4-$6 a month just for having fast forward, pause, rewind and record.

Comparable to buying a VCR then paying for a remote control service fee for the new VCR you own! No the VCR doesn't require special access to the VCR manufacture outside the standard models it just has a V-Chip or something installed.

The people with TiVo by a service that logs all the channels and timezones. The Dish network has the channel listing by default. Yet it cost more for a dish system that has DVR hardware over a standard system. TiVo users pay for guide services.

Fact is DVR owners get charged $48-$72 more per year. Unless they are on the everything package. Others are willing to buy enough junk to cover the $5 fee.

I'm still using a PVR device, they can KEEP their feedthepig DVR systems.

It's only greed if it effects Charlie's bottom line and it's someone else wanting the increase.

They still haven't fixed the rare condition when all my channels go black. Had something to do with sending me refurbrished LNBA where I paid for a NEW unit.

That is another story..

Obviously a loss of a major channel is a bit more important than some dolt making twelve dollars an hour at customer service that hung up on a customer. Charlie Chats are something that you will never get with whatever service floats your boat. The CEO is actually talking to the customers and you belittle this man. You think the CEO of any other cable or satellite company would give you the time of day, much less keep the customers informed about situations regarding your service?

This is stupid. Almost like saying you don't like the way the lifeguard swam over to save your child's life.

Actually, Spike TV (and CMT) are still airing (Dish Network customer since 1998 here.) As SpikeTV was originally owned by some company based out of Nashville, and was only recently purchased by Viacom, the residual contract is still in place and will be for quite some time.

I support Dish Network and CEO Charlie Ergen all the way in this. I'm glad someone has finally stood up to these media conglomerates. In the end, Viacom loses. Dish TV has about 8-9% of the National Television Market. That's an awful lot of advertising dollars.

Charlie has been fighting the big boys for decades. He started out as a small company selling large dish satellite
system to people in the Denver area. From the very beginning he was fighting with the Networks for the rights of people to receive TV via his systems. Of course he was doing this to be able to sell people his systems but never the less he was one of the first to do this. He built his business from nothing to where it is today. If anyone can
stare down Viacom it's him. I support Charlie all the way.
He keeps his promises. I remember at the hearings to deregulate the cable industry. Charlie was there. One of the Alaskan Senators wondered is Echostar could help Alaska
with television. Charlie told the Senator please I will meet with you on the issue at anytime. The result of which is Alaska has a state network for the Native American Population and local TV stations broadcast to Alaskans via Echostar's. Nobody else cared.

Customers need to call in droves

In the news reports, Echostar/Dish is urging customers to call CBS/Viacom and complain. Viacom is urging viewers to call Dish and complain.

I think that all Dish customers should call Dish and CBS and complain loudly to both.

If I were a Dish customer, that is exactly what I would do, and I would tell both that they need to work their differences out to the benefit of the customers.

Then I would give Dish until the end of the current month, or I would cancel my subscription fee, and dare then to try to charge me a cancellation fee.

I would base that dare on the removal of channels which were part of my decision making process when I decided which satellite service to subscribe to. Had some of those channels not been available at the time or subscription, then I would not have taken that service.

It might not work out in the end, but I would try it anyway.

i totally agree I don't care for the channels that were lost and make no significant view changes in my household. i just hope that when it is settled that we don't pay more or even get more of the same Ilk-styled channels...

You wouldn't be able to call them even if you wanted to. All telephone circuits to the phone numbers 1-212-258-8000 and 1-212-258-6000 are busy. Guess they are really getting slammed now. YAY!

mtv sucks anyway

good riddance! youre not missing anything worth watching or hearing for that matter. what does suck is them messing around with channel lineup. i had a dish a few years ago but when they tried to screw me over on a billing issue, i took my business elsewhere.

That's not a loss

I wouldn't consider not having MTV as a loss. It's an opportunity for Echostar to replace that channel with better programming.

This is going to end badly for consumers.
Customers will first complain to Echostar by singing "I want my MTV." Echostar will buckle under the pressure from it's customers submitting to the corporate greed of Viacom. Then within the year Echostar will raise rates, at which point customers will complain again.

I recently received notice that DirecTV is raising their rates (probably in response to the increasing Viacom rates) Perhaps I'll switch to DISH. I've been seeing a great number of commercials for them on DirecTV.

The part that annoys me is that carriers have to pay to get the programming channels. Then consumers are ripped off by having to watch commercials on channels that they (indirectly) pay for.

As an FYI to Echostar consumers there is another option you all have: »www.skyangel.com/ can be picked up with DISH network satellite equipment.

Re: That's not a loss

I agree with your post. I got my increase from Comcast in December. And just last month when I went to my local Comcast office to downgrade from digital to basic, there were two others doing the same thing.

Cable rates are getting too damd expensive for what I get. That means I don't get to see Sopranos anymore but .......... thats not a priority of mine.

You should do what I am doing. Drop your movie channels and wait for the whole season to come out and DVD and rent it. Not only does the cable company get less of your money but the picture quality is way better.
